  • Patent number: 5662435
Abstract: A cutter bit includes a body integrally formed with a mounting shank. The body is formed with a pair of chip boxes having an arcuate surface and a planar surface with a cutting knife mounted to each planar surface. A plurality of equally spaced recesses are formed in the body to reduce cutter bit weight, and to promote heat transfer from the cutter bit to the surrounding atmosphere. Adjacent recesses form annular ribs which extend circumferentially around the body from one cutting knife to the arcuate surface adjacent the other cutting knife. The arcuate ribs operate as heat exchanger fins by substantially increasing the outer surface area of the cutter bit thereby substantially increasing the rate of heat transfer from the cutter bit to the surrounding atmosphere.

  • Patent number: 5322394
Abstract: A highly stiff end mill comprising a shank, a plurality of helix cutting edges on the periphery of the end mill, the end mill being characterized in that a radial rake angle of the helix cutting edges in a cross section perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the end mill is set in the range of -29.degree. to 0.degree. and a core diameter of the end mill is set in the range of 70 to 90% of the outside diameter of the end mill.By selectively determining the negative rake angle in the range described above, this end mill is applicable to hard materials and has general-purpose properties. The improper factors of the end mill, such as increased cutting resistance, can be compensated for by setting the core diameter thereof to the range described above. This end mill is also structured to be able to cut materials with less hardness values as well as hard materials, thereby covering a wide range of applications.

  • Patent number: 5088553
Abstract: A system for cutting lateral holes in plastic pipe liners at the locations of lateral taps in a surrounding pipe comprises a cylindrical body which is inserted into the pipe liner, and remote devices for observing and controlling operation of the body. A rotary cutter, having axial and radial cutting teeth, can be remotely translated in three dimensions with respect to the body, making it possible to cut non-circular holes; the body can be rotated about its axis within the liner as well. A video camera on the sled permits observation of the cutter. Lateral taps are precisely located by monitoring return signals from a microwave transmitter/receiver on the sled, and identifying points of maximum deviation in microwave reflection.
