  • Patent number: 4739918
Abstract: When the free marginal portions 42 are telescoped within the confines of the peripheral flange 36 preparatory to the soldering operation, inward pressure on the end tank 38 usually is maintained during the soldering operation. Of course, the soldering operation involves the application of heat to both the peripheral flange 36 and the peripheral side wall 40. This sometimes will cause the free marginal portion 42 of the peripheral side wall 40 to deform inwardly away from the peripheral flange 36, thus leaving excessive spacing between the free marginal portion 42 and the peripheral flange 36. In order to avoid this condition, raised dimples 44 are formed in the header plate 34 along the peripheral flange 36 and spaced slightly inward from the latter a distance equal to the thickness of the peripheral side wall 40.

  • Patent number: 4626157
Abstract: In a metal can at least one component having an edge portion forming part of a seam is made from pre-laminated plate comprising a metal substrate with a polymeric film bonded over the whole of one or both of its sides. An aerosol valve cup is made from such plate with its underside having such a polymeric layer, and is secured to the can body in a seam by conventional mechanical deformation, such as swaging, so as to compress the polymeric layer in the seam. This provides a satisfactory seal without the need for any additional sealing material within the seam.

  • Patent number: 4597502
Abstract: A reusable industrial drum is formed by temporarily joining the periphery of the end closure to the rim of the cylindrical shell by curling to produce a spiral seam. The outermost layer of the seam, consisting of a portion of the end closure, is cut to permit the end closure element and shell to be separated and disassembled. Further processing operations may take place on the closure element and shell separately. The closure element is thereafter re-mated with the shell, a seam sealant having previously been introduced between the parts, and a locking ring such as a bolt or chime ring is placed over the reassembled seam. The locking ring surrounds the periphery of the seam to hold the seam together. After use, the drum can be readily disassembled for reprocesing and reuse by simply removing the bolt or chime ring.

  • Patent number: 4550850
Abstract: A method is provided for producing an end plate for a container having a continuous wall, with a novel end plate being produced thereby. The end plate includes a thickened plate which is disposed perpendicular to the continuous wall, with the thickened plate having a diameter less than the inner diameter of the cylindrical walls. A sheet having a peripheral down-turned flange is disposed above the thickened plate, with the down-turned flange having a diameter greater than the diameter of the cylindrical walls. An opening is provided in the sheet which is aligned with an opening in the thickened plate. An end portion of the continuous wall is bent outwardly to form a peripheral lip which has an outer diameter less than the diameter of the sheet. A seam between the continuous wall and the metal sheet is formed by inserting a stud into the opening and engaging a groove-containing roller to the down-turned flange and peripheral lip.

  • Patent number: 4543025
Abstract: A metal container has a seam which comprises two continuous groups of concentric circular arcs having a center angle of 180 degrees or 180 degrees and under 180 degrees and centered on two points separated from each other by a distance equal to 1/2 of the sum of the thickness of two metal sheets making up the seam. The axis of the seam is a straight line passing through the two centers that can be inclined at any angle with respect to the axis of the container. The seam has a cross-sectional shape that is mostly point-symmetrical with respect to a center that is the mid-point between the two centers. The seam is formed by an apparatus which comprises a seaming roll and a chuck ring, each of which has a forming groove comprising, in cross-section, two continuous circular arcs centered on two points that are separated from each other by the distance equal to 1/2 of the sum of the thicknesses of the metal sheets making up the seam.
