  • Publication number: 20040262241
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the sterilization of air by destroying viral and/or biological contaminants is disclosed. Large concentrations of ozone mix with ambient air in a mixing chamber with a residence time long enough to destroy the contaminants. An ozone concentration high enough to efficiently destroy said contaminants, is inherently too high to be inhaled by people. This ozone laden, decontaminated air is then scrubbed or catalyzed to reduce the ozone concentration, below the current OSHA limits of 0.1 ppm for an 8-hour continuous exposure. The “conditioned” air can then be delivered to an indoor space. Incorporated in this decontamination apparatus is an ozone interlock system, which ensures that residual ozone does not enter the indoor air space.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus for obtaining high purity ruthenium metal without the need for high temperature processing, expensive reagents, complex series of wet processes, or expensive equipment. According to the present invention, a gas stream including ozone (O3) is brought into contact with a ruthenium source in one or more reaction vessels. The ozone reacts with the ruthenium source to form ruthenium tetraoxide (RuO4), a compound that is a gas at the reaction conditions. The ruthenium tetraoxide, along with unreacted ozone and the remainder of the gas stream is then fed into a collection vessel where a major portion of the m gaseous ruthenium tetraoxide is thermally reduced to form ruthenium dioxide (RuO2) deposits within the collection vessel. The deposited ruthenium dioxide is then reduced to produce highly pure ruthenium metal.

Abstract: An apparatus for effectively dissolving gas into liquid medium to obtain high concentration of gas solution comprises a mixer and a tank enclosure, wherein the mixer primarily comprises a quasi-Venturi tube and an expansion chamber. During operation, gas is introduced into the liquid in the quasi-Venturi-typed mixer. A valve mounted at the inlet of the mixer is used to regulate the gas flow so that the flow rate of the gas entering the mixer is lower than the rate of the gas drawn into the quasi-Venturi tube. With the gas drawn-in capability of the quasi-Venturi tube, gas can be mixed with the liquid flow through the quasi-Venturi tube under negative pressure and forms small gas bubbles in the liquid. The liquid carrying small gas bubbles flows out of the mixer, and subsequently flows into the tank enclosure and forms a whirlpool therein. As such, the gas bubbles can remain in the liquid for a prolonged time, which helps the gas dissolve in the liquid.

Abstract: Radioactive laundry liquid wastes are supplied in a liquid waste heating vessel. Hydrogen peroxide and an alkali solution are supplied to the liquid waste heating vessel. pH of radioactive laundry liquid wastes is adjusted to 7 or higher by the alkali solution. The radioactive laundry liquid wastes are heated to 50° C. or higher by a heating device. The heated radioactive laundry liquid wastes are introduced to first and second aeration vessels. Ozone is supplied from an ozone generator by way of an ozone gas discharge port to the first aeration vessel. Ozone discharged from the first aeration vessel is introduced from the ozone gas discharge port to the second aeration vessel. Therefore, the amount of ozone dissolved into the radioactive laundry liquid wastes is increased so that the amount of hydroxy radicals formed for decomposing organic substances increases, since the laundry liquid wastes are heated to 50° C. or higher under the presence of hydrogen peroxide.

Abstract: A system for processing a wafer using ozone includes an ozone gas source connecting into the process chamber. Wafers are held within a holder or fixture in the chamber. A chamber exhaust line connects the process chamber to an inlet at the top end of an ozone destructor. A system or cabinet exhaust line extends from an outlet also at the top end of the ozone destructor. A canister within the ozone destructor contains a catalyst. Exhaust flow from the process chamber moves down through the ozone destructor and then up through the catalyst. Saturation of the catalyst by condensing water vapor and loss of catalytic efficiency, is reduced. As the process chamber and chamber exhaust line are better isolated from the catalyst, potential for catalyst particles moving into the process chamber or chamber exhaust line, or for condensing vapor to back up in the chamber exhaust line, are reduced.

Abstract: An apparatus for sterilizing an article of mail includes a chamber defining an airtight space and having an entrance for receiving the article of mail. A vacuum pump is coupled to the chamber for withdrawing air therefrom and, specifically, from the article of mail, this air withdrawal reducing the chamber air pressure. An ozone generator is coupled to the chamber for introducing ozone at atmospheric pressure therein following air withdrawal. This causes efficient diffusing of the ozone into the article of mail for sterilizing it against anthrax. The ozone is then withdrawn into an ozone filter that includes a non-consumable manganese dioxide catalyst for converting the ozone back into oxygen. The article of mail may be initially perforated to enhance air withdrawal and ozone diffusion. The article of mail may be embossed following ozone withdrawal to indicate completion of sterilization. The apparatus may be implemented using multiple chambers.
