Abstract: Provided herein are methods and system to increase selective thermomechanical damage to a biological body, such as a cancer cell or cell associated with a pathophysiological condition. The biological body or cancer cell is specifically targeted with nanoparticulates comprising one or more targeting moieties which form nanoparticulate clusters thereon or therewithin. Pulsed electromagnetic radiation, e.g., optical radiation, having a wavelength spectrum selected for a peak wavelength near to or matching a peak absorption wavelength of the nanoparticulates selectively heats the nanoparticulates thereby generating vapor microbubbles around the clusters causing damage to the targets without affecting any surrounding medium or normal cells or tissues. Also provided is a method of treating leukemia using the methods and system described herein.

The articles, devices or formulations contain a non-leaching antimicrobial material which is a unique combination of an organic matrix having biocidal metallic materials non-leachably associated with the matrix. The antimicrobial material may used to form an antimicrobial coating or layer on a surface of the article or device, or may be dispersed in a vehicle or carrier to form a topical antiseptic or disinfectant, or solid shape having contact killing antimicrobial properties. When a microorganism contacts the article, device, or formulation, the biocidal metallic material is transferred to the microorganism in amounts sufficient to kill it.

  • Patent number: 7279173
Abstract: A microbicidally coated article, especially a container, having on at least part of it a coating comprising an organically modified inorganic matrix comprising silver colloids which is obtainable by application of a coating composition comprising a) a hydrolysate or condensate based on at least one hydrolysable silane with at least one non-hydrolysable substituent and b) a silver compound to the surface of the article and treatment with heat and/or radiation to form the silver colloid coating. Articles coated in accordance with the invention are therefore particularly suitable for purposes of disinfection, preservation, cosmetic, pharmaceutical or medical purposes. Articles from the pharmaceutical or medical sector, especially containers for pharmaceuticals or articles or components which come into contact with the human body and are required to be free from germs, are preferred fields of application.

  • Patent number: 7264739
Abstract: A dendrimer complex comprising a dendrimer and an antimicrobial agent with the dendrimer complex placeable directly into a fluid to inhibit growth of microbes or rid the fluid of microbes. In a further embodiment of the invention the dendrimer complex is secured to a carrier, which is placed in a body of fluid and allowed to dispense the antimicrobial agent into the fluid. Once the antimicrobial agent is dispensed, the dendrimer complex can be removed and recycled to add functional groups to the dendrimer so that the dendrimer can be reused.
