Patent number: 7862755Abstract: An extrusion die for extruding thermoplastic materials to produce a sheet of substantially uniform thickness, the extrusion die having a manifold width that increases from the centerline toward the die exit or lip. The increasing width manifold arms, with the preland portion, provide a constant shear rate at all areas of the die and a constant residence time, so that every fluid particle path through the die has the same residence time. By having the increasing width manifold arms, the preland area of the extrusion die is decreased, usually by about 30%, often about 40-60%, compared to a Winter die, thus decreasing clam-shelling effect and allowing design and extrusion of wider sheets.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 2008Date of Patent: January 4, 2011Inventor: Mohamed B. Publication number: 20040084799Abstract: Systems and methods for making a material composition are disclosed. The method includes mixing a thermoset polymer, a petroleum distillate, a release agent, and a catalyst to form an admixture. A cellulosic material is mixed with the admixture to form a generally homogenous furnish. The system includes a mixing chamber, a feeding chamber, and a die. The die includes a pressing chamber, which has a volume formed by first and second platens. The platens are in facing opposition to one another and have a length extending continuously from an entrance to an exit of the die. The platens have a plurality of orifices and heating elements disposed along the length. The platens are disposed in first and second positions. The first position forms a first volume and the second position forms a second volume.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 1, 2002Publication date: May 6, 2004Inventors: Sean Robert Broker, Jonathan Philip Alexander, David J. Publication number: 20040080075Abstract: An apparatus comprising a die having at least one application slot. The slot is in fluid communication with a die cavity. An expansible chamber device is disposed within the die cavity and changes volume in response to changes in pressure within the expansible chamber device. Another aspect of the invention is a method of translating a liquid through a die. A coating die is provided. The die comprises at least one applicator slot in fluid communication with a die cavity. An expansible chamber device is disposed within the cavity. The expansible chamber device is actuated by changes in the fluid pressure within the expansible chamber device. The liquid is translated through the die and delivered from the application slot at intervals corresponding to actuation of the expansible chamber device. Another aspect of the invention is a method for forming a die. An apparatus comprising a die having at least one applicator slot in fluid communication with the die cavity is provided.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 23, 2002Publication date: April 29, 2004Applicant: 3M Innovative Properties CompanyInventors: Mikhail L. Publication number: 20040076704Abstract: An extruder or dispenser assembly for dough-like material. A progressing cavity pump receives the material and delivers it to an extruder assembly or die. In a preferred embodiment, the output of the pump is separated into independent streams. Each stream may have a desired minor constituent (such as color and/or flavor) added with the streams being co-extruded, as desired. Static mixers may be employed to incorporate the minor constituents into each stream.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 9, 2003Publication date: April 22, 2004Inventor: Christopher S. Hannaford

Publication number: 20040049002Abstract: A process for making a polyurethane, comprising reacting a multifunctional isocyanate, a polyol and, optionally, a chain extender, wherein at least two reagents selected from the isocyanate, the polyol, the chain extender, any mixture thereof and any pre-polymer formed therefrom, are intensively mixed prior to being reactively extruded, to form a polyurethane having a predetermined stoichiometry and thermal history. The polyurethanes obtained by such a process are of highly consistent composition and are, thus, especially suitable for use in the medical device industry.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 12, 2003Publication date: March 11, 2004Inventors: Geoffrey Andrews, Anthony Johnson

Patent number: RE42424Abstract: In the extrusion of feed-stuff pellets and relevant consumer products, the extruded products are subject to expansion as a result of the boiling of their water content when the products, after being exposed to high extrusion pressure and a correspondingly high temperature, are discharged to the atmosphere through the extrusion nozzles. Such an expansion is directly aimed at, but it is desirable to be able to control it, which is difficult by adjustment of the ordinary process parameters. With the invention it has been found that the expansion which arises can be controlled in a highly constant manner, i.e. by carrying out the extrusion into a closed chamber in which an over-pressure of a few bar is established in relation to the atmospheric pressure, and which can be regulated. The extrusion products can be continuously discharged from this chamber, or they can be discharged intermittently in portions.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 1999Date of Patent: June 7, 2011Assignee: Andritz Feed & Biofuel A/SInventor: Anders Flarup-Knudsen
