  • Patent number: 5788808
Abstract: The present invention relates generally to a new apparatus and method for forming cavities in semiconductor substrates without the necessity of using an insert. More particularly, the invention encompasses an apparatus and a method for fabricating cavities in semiconductor substrates wherein a cured thick compressible elastic pad is placed over the cavity prior to lamination and caused to conform to the contour of the cavity, thus preventing collapse of, or damage to, the cavity shelves or corners during the lamination process. After the lamination process, the cured thick compressible elastic pad is conveniently removed from the cavity area without causing any damage to the cavity shelves or corners or having any paste pull-outs. This pad can be reused multiple number of times to form these MLC cavity substrates.

Abstract: A preform mold assembly for the injection molding of a multi-layer preform for use in the blow molding of container. The preform mold assembly comprises a preform mold having a gate for receiving molten plastic material. The preform mold has a cavity with longitudinal axis and defines an inner surface. A core-pin is situated within the cavity and spaced from said inner surface. A preform cavity is formed between the inner surface of the cavity and the core-pin for receiving molten plastic from the gate. A threadsplit portion is situated within the cavity at a location remote from said gate. The inner surface of the cavity defines a plurality of flutes formed generally parallel to the cavity longitudinal axis and extend longitudinally along the inner surface of the mold to the threadsplit portion.

  • Patent number: 5622733
Abstract: A process for forming composite hollow crown stiffened skins and panels in which a first layer or skin is placed on a forming surface of a female mold and, after forming a plurality of U-shaped stiffener elements in the first skin, a second skin is placed over the first skin, whereupon the resulting assembly is prepared for autoclave curing. The stiffener elements are formed by pressing the first skin into U-shaped depressions in the female mold surface and inserting a hollow, expandable rubber mandrel into each of the depressions on top of the first skin. Valve stems in the mandrels enable maintaining the pressure inside at atmospheric pressure. The mandrels are maintained in their "pressurized" state during subsequent formation and autoclave curing steps.

  • Patent number: 5487853
Abstract: A three-dimensional complex preform is made formed of various types of reinforcement fiberglass fibers with a binder at the interstices which rigidize the preform to the shape and form approximating the molded article, which can be handled and stored until a final mold is made filling the interstices with plastic and curing the plastic. Complex preforms require either specific reinforcements in the form of increased sections, specific reinforcement, or require modification or enlargement in size or increase in complexity by the attachment of one or more additional preforms. To modify an existing preform and obtain a desired shape and form, reinforcement members or additional preforms are attached by energetic stitching. An elongate strip of bead material is dispensed beneath the heat sealing member and underneath the border of the plastic sheet underlying the member so that the border overlaps the strip. The heat sealing member is then motivated downwardly into contact with the portion of the border of the plastic sheet underlying the member to heat seal the border to the bead material. The curvature of the bead material provides excess sheet material where the heat sealing takes place to minimize the formation of a tear line between the bead material and the plastic sheet.
