Abstract: An insert is held in a cavity within a die set by a movable hold member. Molten resin is injected into the cavity when the insert is held by the hold member. The hold member is separated from the insert at a given timing. A surface of the hold member is heated to a temperature higher than a temperature of an inner surface of the die set. The hold-member surface contacts the molten resin. The die-set inner surface is exposed in the cavity.

Abstract: This invention relates to a mold design, injection molding machine and a method for forming a multi-layer plastic article by over molding where the second layer of the article includes a portion having a different geometrical profile than the first one. The novel injection mold and injection molding machine for producing over-molded articles comprises an array of one or more cores which engage arrays of one or more first cavity and arrays of one or more composite cavities. Each composite cavity is formed from the combination of a second cavity and a cavity extension which carries at least a portion of the different geometrical profile, such as a thread. In one embodiment, the cavity extension comprises a pair of cavity portions which are mounted adjacent the core to laterally moveable slides on a movable plate, that can be a stripper plate.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a seal pin indexed precisely in a resin transfer molding die to assure the desired resin-to-fiber ratio in the mold part, and, thereby, to produce reliably and consistently a part of minimum weight with adequate strength. The index/resin seal pin of the present invention for RTM mold dies is novel in that it provides the seal (via replaceable O-rings) on the threaded stem of the pin to prevent low viscosity resin from invading the threads, bolts pins, or other elements of the internal mandrel. The pin allows the entire inner mandrel to be enclosed and sealed within the mold cavity, simplifying the sealing system. The invention also relates to a method for using the seal pin in a resin transfer molding process.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus that forms a polymeric structure. The apparatus has a mold plate, a circular trench, a male and female interconnect, a vertical gap filler, and a cylinder. The mold plate has a predetermined geometric design. The circular trench is in the mold plate and the difference between the outer diameter and the inner diameter of the circular trench is a distance D. The male interconnect and the female interconnect are interspaced between each other. Each interconnect rotates within the circular trench and has a base and an interconnection portion. Each base has a width D and slidably mates to the mold plate. Each interconnect portion has a minimum width W which is less than D. The male interconnect portion protrudes downwards relatively from its base to a distance P, likewise the female interconnect portion protrudes upwards relatively from its base to a distance P. The vertical gap filler aligns with the circular trench and has a foundation and an extension.

  • Patent number: 6187251
Abstract: A process for producing a thermoplastic resin hollow molded article is disclosed. The process takes place in a molding machine including first and second mold halves having respective mold surfaces defining a mold cavity. At least one of the mold halves is movable relative to the other mold half to permit the mold surfaces to be moved both towards and away from each other between closed state and unclosed states. At least the first mold half has incorporated therein at least one slidable block defining a portion of the mold surface of the first mold half. According to the process, thermoplastic resin is supplied in a molten state between the mold surfaces while the mold halves are in the unclosed state, and at least one of the mold halves is moved relative to the other mold half to press and spread the thermoplastic resin so that the cavity is filled with the thermoplastic resin. During the process, compressed gas is supplied into the thermoplastic resin located in the cavity.

  • Patent number: 6171539
Abstract: A method for forming a molded grommet using a device which includes a fixed mold and a movable mold, the latter having three positions. The first is a closed position, wherein the two molds are adjacent each other with a middle plate between them. Second, there is an intermediate position in which the middle plate and movable mold are spaced apart from the fixed mold. Third, there is an open position, wherein the movable mold is spaced further from the fixed mold than the middle plate. A core is fixed to the movable mold and, when in the closed position; the two molds, the core, and the edge of the middle plate define the molding space into which moldable resin is introduced, thereby forming the grommet with the edge within the channel. As the core moves from the intermediate position to the open position, the middle plate is retained in the intermediate position; therefore, the core is pulled out of the grommet through the axial hollow therein.

Heretofore, many fiber receiving holes have been arranged along a line at regular intervals with tolerance amounting to less than 1 micron. 10 and connect two ferrules, a precisely processed cylindrical metal guide pin under 1 micron, precise pitches formed in ferrules and a metal pin guide hole are used, Consequently, it has been necessary to maintain a high degree of precision. The present invention maintains a high degree of precision by reverse direction connection dependent merely on a predetermined height a reference plane. The reference plane is formed by relatively easy plane processing as the method of maintaining precise height and directivity of flow is added to the inside of a mold.

Abstract: A side-action mechanism is provided for forming recesses or apertures in injection molded plastic parts and which includes a slide carrier and a driver actuator therefor which are part of a modular side-action cam unit that can be attached entirely into one mold half, e.g., the core half, so as to avoid having to machine and customize the other mold half or cavity half as with prior side-action devices. In addition, the modular side-action cam unit provides a driving surface that is preferably flat which engages the bottom flat of the cavity half to obviate the alignment problems which can occur in the prior angled cam pin side-action mechanisms. The present modular cam unit is a small unit and does not take as long to install into the mold as the prior side-action cam mechanisms which required installing parts in both the cavity and core halves of the mold.
