Abstract: A wear alloy coating (14) applied to a substrate material (12) by a cold spray process. Particles of the wear alloy coating material (16) are directed toward a target surface (18) of the substrate at a velocity sufficiently high for the particles to deform and to adhere to the target surface. The size and composition of the particles may be varied during the cold spray process to produce a coating with a varying property across the depth of the coating. Particles of the wear alloy material may be applied by cold spraying along with particles of a second material such as a lubricant or a ceramic material. For Group 5 hard facing materials, the size and distribution of the embedded carbide nodules may be controlled by controlling the selection of the carbide particles being sprayed. • Patent number: 6759085
Abstract: A cold spraying process for forming a coating of powder particles sprayed in a gas substantially at ambient temperature onto a workpiece is improved by placement in a low ambient pressure environment in which the pressure is substantially less than atmospheric pressure. The low pressure environment acts to substantially accelerate the sprayed powder particles, thereby forming an improved coating of the particles on the workpiece. The low ambient pressure environment is provided by a vacuum tank coupled to a vacuum pump and having both the workpiece and a cold spray gun located therein. The cold spray gun is coupled to a source of pressurized inert gas as well as to a feeder for providing a flow of the powder to be sprayed. Abstract: Interference pigment flakes and foils are provided which have luminescent and color-shifting properties. The pigment flakes can have a symmetrical coating structure on opposing sides of a core layer, can have an asymmetrical coating structure with all of the layers on one side of the core layer, or can be formed with encapsulating coatings around the core layer. The coating structure of the flakes and foils includes a core layer, a dielectric layer overlying the core layer, and an absorber layer overlying the dielectric layer. A luminescent material is incorporated into the flakes or foils as a separate layer or as at least part of one or more of the other layers. The pigment flakes and foils exhibit a discrete color shift so as to have a first color at a first angle of incident light or viewing and a second color different from the first color at a second angle of incident light or viewing.

Abstract: A method for dispensing particles onto a surface. The steps of the process include holding the particles in a hopper having a dispensing opening covered by a screen which has uniformly sized openings that are sufficiently large to allow the largest particles to pass through, yet sufficiently small to hold the particles back when the dispenser is not operating; rotating, outside the hopper, a cylindrical brush covered with regularly spaced bristles and positioned such that the bristles protrude through openings in the screen and draw particles through the screen to dispense them onto the surface; and varying the dispensing rate of the particles by at least one of (a) varying the rotation speed of the brush, (b) adjusting the distance from the screen to the central longitudinal axis of the brush, (c) adjusting the screen opening size, (d) adjusting the brush-to-screen pressure, or (e) adjusting the tension of the screen. A method of making a web with embedded particles.

Abstract: A cleaning sheet has a base sheet, a foamed layer of a porous material on the base sheet and a polishing layer formed on the foamed layer. The foamed layer includes abrading particles and air bubbles. Such a cleaning sheet may be produced by preparing a paint having air bubbles dispersed inside by mechanically foaming a foaming material containing a foaming resin material and abrading particles, forming on the base sheet a foamed layer having abrading particles dispersed inside by coating a surface of the base sheet with this paint and drying it, and forming a polishing layer on the foamed layer. A probe having a tip may be cleaned with such a cleaning sheet by causing a surface of its polishing layer to be pressed against the tip of the probe and causing the tip of the probe to penetrate the polishing layer and further to be inserted into the foamed layer having abrading particles dispersed inside.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for coating powders on wood substrate comprising pre-treating at least one surface of the substrate with a substantially solvent free treating composition, applying a powder coating composition on the pre-treated surface of the substrate; and curing the powder coating composition. The treating composition includes at least one thermoset material and has a viscosity that is sufficiently low to allow the treating composition to wet out the surface(s) of the substrate and to penetrate into the surface fiber structure of the substrate.

  • Patent number: 6544586
Abstract: A gas sensor element includes a solid electrolyte layer having a plurality of projections formed on its outer surface, an inner electrode formed on the inner surface of the solid electrolyte layer, an outer electrode formed on the outer surface of the solid electrolyte layer, an outer electrode formed on the outer surface of the solid electrolyte layer and a spinel protection layer formed on the outer electrode for protection. The projections are formed on the outer surface of the solid electrolyte layer such that they are formed in a single layer; an area occupied by the projections accounts for 10% to 85% of the outer surface of the solid electrolyte layer and the distance between the neighboring projections is 5 &mgr;m to 300 &mgr;m. Thus, the outer electrode is formed on the solid electrolyte layer in such a manner as to penetrate into pits formed between neighboring projections and is thus strongly bonded to the solid electrolyte layer, thereby improving thermal durability.

Abstract: A drill resistant plate, which presents a rough surface of hardened particles to drilling attack, and which tends to snap or destroy drill bits before they can began drilling. The plate is made by brazing hard particles into a matrix of brazing material attached to a steel plate. Nickel-Silver brazing material is used to form the matrix on the steel plate, and tungsten carbide particles of 8-10 mesh are secured within the matrix, with the hard particles of tungsten carbide partially exposed, presenting a roughened surface with angular pieces of tungsten carbide to the drilling attack.

  • Patent number: 6507393
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for detecting removable particulates initially on a test surface or surface to be inspected. The removable particles are transferred to a portion of a tacky surface on a carrier by adhering and then removing the portion of the tacky surface from the test surface. The carrier is received by a positioning means and passed through the field of view of a surface inspection means guided by a controller. Signals from the surface inspection means are combined with coordinates from the controller to produce particle coordinates, which indicate particulates initially on the test surface. Particle coordinates on the tacky surface measured before the tacky surface is adhered and removed from the test surface can be compared with particle coordinates measured after the tacky surface is adhered and removed from the test surface.
