  • Patent number: 5866210
Abstract: A method for coating a substrate having a plurality of channels with a coating media in which the substrate is partially immersed into a vessel containing a bath of the coating media with the volume of coating media lying above the end of the immersed substrate being sufficient to coat the substrate to a desired level. A vacuum is then applied to the partially immersed substrate at an intensity and time sufficient to draw the coating media upwardly from the bath into each of the channels to form a uniform coating profile therein.

  • Patent number: 5851592
Abstract: Sheets to be coated with water-based coating material, for example a primer and a low adhesion backsize, are supplied from a feeder (1), in end-to-end overlapping relationship, to a dual coater (3) in which the sheets are coated individually on both sides. A sheet inserter (2) is provided, upstream of the dual coater, to insert sheets from a second supply into the sheets from the feeder (1). The dual coated sheets are dried as individual sheets or as a pseudo-web of overlapped sheets. The sheets are then overlapped, unless previously overlapped, and the direction of overlap changed, if necessary, to provide the trailing edge of each sheet on top of the leading edge of each succeeding sheet. The overlapped sheets are conveyed through an adhesive transfer station (7) where stripes (236) of at least partially dried adhesive are coated onto the dual coated sheets from a transfer belt (71).

  • Patent number: 5851338
Abstract: A composition for saturation of preformed, previously cured foam substrates having an at least partially open cell configuration, includes a polymer binder in which microspheres containing a phase change material are dispersed. Preferred phase change materials include paraffinic hydrocarbons. The microspheres may be microencapsulated. A preferred cured foam substrate is a skived polyurethane or polyether foam of from 20 to 1000 mils in thickness, preferably 20 to 200 mils in thickness, having up to 6 ounces per square yard or more of encapsulated phase change material embedded in a polymer binder. One method of applying the binder with dispersed encapsulated phase change materials is by applying a binder/microsphere dispersion to the upper surface of a previously cured foam sheet with, then drawing a vacuum from the underside of the cured foam sheet to permeate from 20% to 100% of the cured foam sheet with the binder/microsphere dispersion. The resulting product is then cured.

Abstract: This invention relates to the treatment of substrates with fluidized material in repetitive patterns during application cycles. The treatment patterns made with this invention can be altered by changing machine operating parameters. The patterns of fluidized material are applied to substrates using intermittent charges of compressed air. The intermittent charges of compressed air pass through a venturi slot which creates a region of low pressure in the charges adjacent to a region where the fluidized material accumulates between application cycles. This region of low pressure helps to entrain the fluidized material in the charge of compressed air. After the fluidized material is entrained in the charge of compressed air, the charge deposits the fluidized material on the substrate.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for making banded smoking article wrappers is provided. The apparatus includes a cylindrical rotating applicator that has alternating regions of mesh material and regions of solid material on its outside surface. The applicator allows repetitive patterns of additional slurry to be applied to a continuous web of paper so that the basis weight of the paper is repetitively increased. Such paper, when incorporated into a smoking article, modifies the burn rate characteristics of the article.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing a magnetic recording medium such as for a magnetic disc, in which a magnetic layer comprising a Co-based alloy is formed on a carbon substrate and a heat treatment is applied at a temperature of 250.degree. to 1450.degree. C. to improve the coercive force. Further, the squareness ratio is improved by applying the heat treatment under a magnetic field. Greater coercive force can be obtained by forming a Cr underlayer prior to the formation of the magnetic layer. Increased recording density of the magnetic recording medium can be realized by improving the coercive force and the squareness ratio in this way.

  • Patent number: 5230922
Abstract: In the bonding of lightweight fleeces, there is the problem at relatively high feeding velocities of providing the fleece with the required amount of impregnating agent. Also, it has been found that the individual fibers of a fleece move with respect to one another during the impregnating step, and the fleece tends to disintegrate. In order to impart to the fleece, without great expenditure, a strength required for the bonding procedure, the provision is made to subject the fleece to a preliminary bonding step by wetting with cold water prior to application of the bonding agent, for example in a foam padder. It has been discovered under practical conditions that this minor bonding step is adequate for avoiding disintegration of the loose fiber layer within the nip padder during impregnation.

  • Patent number: 5127960
Abstract: An apparatus and a method are disclosed for the removal and the recovery of washcoat remaining in the channels of freshly coated monolithic or honeycombed catalytic carriers. The carrier is inserted into a chamber from above and tightly fitted therein at least with the lowest part of the carrier therein. The chamber is fitted with a collection area and a runoff located thereunder. The runoff leads via a shutoff valve into a separation vessel under a vacuum. The opening and closing of the shutoff valve causes air to be aspirated through the carrier channels, which are open at the top or are gradually opened by means of a slotted slide. This action causes the washcoat remnants to be transferred into the separation vessel, where they can be collected in the sump and are then pumped off. The apparatus can be used in systems for manufacturing catalysts for cleaning exhaust gases.
