Abstract: One or more aspects of the disclosure pertain to an article including a film disposed on a glass substrate, which may be strengthened, where the interface between the film and the glass substrate is modified, such that the article retains its average flexural strength, and the film retains key functional properties for its application. Some key functional properties of the film include optical, electrical and/or mechanical properties. The bridging of a crack from one of the film or the glass substrate into the other of the film or the glass substrate can be prevented by inserting a crack mitigating layer between the glass substrate and the film.

Abstract: The invention provides a glass member provided with a sealing material layer, which suppresses generation of failures such as cracks or breakage of glass substrates or a sealing layer even when the distance between two glass substrates is narrowed, and thereby makes it possible to improve the sealing property between the glass substrates and its reliability. A glass substrate has a surface provided with a sealing region, on which a sealing material layer having a thickness of at most 15 ?m is formed. The sealing material layer includes a fired material of a glass material for sealing containing a sealing glass, a laser absorbent and optionally a low-expansion filler, wherein the total content of the laser absorbent and the low-expansion filler being the optional component in the glass material for sealing is within the range of from 2 to 44 vol %.

  • Patent number: 8689726
Abstract: The present invention comprises an automated apparatus capable of spray depositing polyelectrolytes via the LbL mechanism with minimal or no human interaction. In certain embodiments, the apparatus sprays atomized polyelectrolytes onto a vertically oriented substrate. To counteract the effects of irregular spray patterns, the substrate is preferably slowly rotated about a central axis. In certain embodiments, the apparatus also includes a forced pathway for the droplets, such as a pathway created by using a vacuum. In this way, a thicker or three-dimensional substrate can be coated. In certain embodiments, the apparatus is designed so as to be scalable. Thus, through the use of multiple instantiations of the apparatus, a large or irregularly shaped substrate can be coated. Rolls of textile can therefore be coated using the apparatus. Additionally, the present invention includes a method to uniformly coat a substrate, such as a hydrophobic textile material, using aqueous solutions of polyelectrolytes.

Abstract: The invention includes the structure of a multilayer protective coating, which may have, among other properties, scratch resistance, UV absorption, and an effective refractive index matched to a polymer substrate such as polycarbonate. Each layer may contain multiple components consisting of organic and inorganic materials. The multilayer protective coating includes interleaved organic layers and inorganic layers. The organic layers may have 20% or more organic compounds such as SiOxCyHz. The inorganic layers may have 80% or more inorganic materials, such as SiO2, SiOxNy, and ZnO, or mixtures thereof. Each layer of the multilayer protective coating is a micro layer and may have a thickness of 5 angstroms or less in various embodiments. The multilayer protective coating may contain in the order of hundreds or thousands of micro layers, depending upon the design requirement of applications. In each micro layer, the components may have substantially continuous variations in concentration.

  • Publication number: 20140054091
Abstract: A coated component for use in a fluid energy device includes a coating system with multiple layers of coating material, including a soft material such as a polymer coated over a hard material such as a metal. The fluid energy device can be a fluid motor or fluid pump, and the coated component can be a rotor or a stator. The hard and soft materials may be interlocked with each other and/or with an interposed porous layer. The presence of the soft material can reduce or eliminate the need for meticulous polishing operations typically required with as-applied hard materials while improving the longevity of mating fluid energy device components. The mating components are exposed only to the soft material in the initial stages of operation, after which the soft material wears away to gradually expose the mating components to the hard material in a less abrasive manner.
