Abstract: A method for manufacturing a z-directed component for insertion into a mounting hole in a printed circuit board according to one example embodiment includes depositing a liquid based material onto a top surface of a rotatable plate. The top surface of the rotatable plate has at least one cavity formed thereon that defines the shape of a layer of the z-directed component. The rotatable plate is spun to level a top surface of the liquid based material in the at least one cavity. The liquid based material is cured to form the layer of the z-directed component. A conductive material is applied to at least one surface of the formed layer. The z-directed component is formed including a stack of component layers that includes the formed layer.

Abstract: Multilayer structures comprising a covalent organic framework (COF) film in contact with a polyaromatic carbon (PAC) film. The multilayer structures can be made by combining precursor compounds in the presence of a PAC film. The PAC film can be for example, a single layer graphene film. The multilayer structures can be used in a variety of applications such as solar cells, flexible displays, lighting devices, RFID tags, sensors, photoreceptors, batteries, capacitors, gas-storage devices, and gas-separation devices.

Abstract: An object is to provide a manufacturing method of a functional film where it is possible to stably manufacture a functional film which favorably exhibits the intended function and has excellent optical characteristics. The problem is solved by forming an uppermost organic layer of an organic layer with a thickness of 30 to 300 nm by using a coating material containing a surfactant where the content is 0.01 to 10 mass % when the uppermost organic layer is formed.

Abstract: The method of applying a polyelectrolyte multilayer film for corrosion control involves chemical and/or electrochemical pretreatment of a metallic substrate for better adherence of the protective film to the substrate. The method includes anodically polarizing the substrate in a solution of an acid for a period from one second to five hundred seconds before multilayer deposition. The acid may be an inorganic acid, such as sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, etc., or an organic acid, such as oxalic acid, acetic acid, etc. The method may include abrading the substrate and rinsing the substrate with deionized water before polarizing the substrate, and applying the polyelectrolyte multilayers following pretreatment.

Abstract: A laser-engraveable composition comprises one or more elastomeric rubbers including at least 10 parts of one or more non-CLCB EPDM elastomeric rubbers, based on parts per hundred of the total weight of elastomeric rubbers (phr). The laser-engraveable composition further comprises 2-30 phr of a near-infrared radiation absorber and optionally 1-80 phr of an inorganic, non-infrared radiation absorber filler, as well as a vulcanizing composition that comprises a mixture of at least two peroxides. A first peroxide has a t90 value of 1-6 minutes as measured at 160° C., and a second peroxide has a t90 value of 8-40 minutes as measured at 160° C. This laser-engraveable composition can be used to form a laser-engraveable layer and to form various flexographic printing precursors.

Abstract: A method for making a conductive polymer composite for detecting a gas includes forming a porous conductive layer of a conductive powder on a substrate, applying a polymer solution containing a solvent and a gas responsive polymer material dissolved in the solvent to the porous conductive layer such that a portion of the polymer solution penetrates into the porous conductive layer and the remainder of the polymer solution forms a thin film covering a top of the porous conductive layer, the gas responsive polymer material being capable of adsorbing and desorbing the gas, and removing the solvent from the polymer solution so as to form a polymer matrix covering the porous conductive layer.

More specifically, the articles include a substrate, a primer layer of acid-sintered silica nanoparticles, and a hydrophobic fluorinated layer. Abstract: A single-step, spray-applied, multi-layer liner seals the components and imparts structural integrity for lining a system component. The multi-layer liner includes an inner or first moisture barrier or skin layer, a foam layer and a second moisture barrier or skin layer. Where desired, a separate primer layer can be applied to wet surfaces and in order to form an enhanced bonding layer between the system component, typically a concrete or cement surface, and the first moisture barrier or skin layer. The first and second moisture barrier layers naturally form a skin on both sides of the internal foam layer. The combination of the foam layer and the two moisture barrier layers imparts structural strength and rigidity to the cured liner.
Abstract: In an embodiment, a method for manufacturing a thin layer chromatography (“TLC”) plate is disclosed. The method includes forming a layer of elongated nanostructures (e.g., carbon nanotubes), priming the elongated nanostructures with one or more adhesion priming layers, and at least partially coating the elongated nanostructures with a coating. The coating includes a stationary phase and/or precursor of a stationary phase for use in chromatography. The stationary phase may be functionalized with hydroxyl groups by exposure to a base or acid. The stationary phase may further be treated with a silane (e.g., an amino silane) to improve the performance of the TLC plate. Embodiments for TLC plates and related methods are also disclosed.

Abstract: There are provided: a method for forming a shining coating film which can form a coating film extremely excellent in a leveling property and a brightness with good workability and can also realize the reduction of environmental burden; and a coated article excellent in a design property obtained by this method. In a method comprising the steps of sequentially coating a shining material-containing solvent type first base coat coating, a shining material-containing solvent type second base coat coating and a top clear coating onto a base material and baking a formed multilayered coating film at the same time, an improvement is made so that the resin composition and coating nonvolatile concentration of the first and second base coat coatings and the amount of nonvolatiles in the first and second base coating films will have specific conditions.

Abstract: A method for surface treating a carbon-containing material in which carbon-containing material is reacted with decomposing ozone in a reactor (e.g., a hollow tube reactor), wherein a concentration of ozone is maintained throughout the reactor by appropriate selection of at least processing temperature, gas stream flow rate, reactor dimensions, ozone concentration entering the reactor, and position of one or more ozone inlets (ports) in the reactor, wherein the method produces a surface-oxidized carbon or carbon-containing material, preferably having a surface atomic oxygen content of at least 15%. The resulting surface-oxidized carbon material and solid composites made therefrom are also described.
