Abstract: Work is performed on workpieces, e.g., coating circuit boards, of different types in random order in assembly line fashion on a rotary table of an apparatus under programmed control. The table is rotated stepwise to move successive sections thereof from a load-unload station at which the respective workpieces are loaded and unloaded in random order, to a sensing station at which the type and orientation of the workpiece is sensed, next to a work station at which work is performed on the workpiece in dependence upon its type and orientation previously sensed at the sensing station, and in turn back to the load-unload station to complete a cycle. The workpiece is either changed in orientation on the table section for a repeat cycle to perform further work thereon or is replaced by another workpiece in random order.

  • Patent number: 5215130
Abstract: While the work-mounting sections of the work mounting member is intermittently rotated around the circle by a driving mechanism, works are fed to the work mounting sections at the first position by a work supplying device, predetermined liquid mixture is injected to and applied on works, at the third position, by a injecting mechanism, and those works which have been applied with the liquid mixture are discharged from the work mounting sections, at the second position, by a work discharging mechanism. Upon completion of injection of the liquid mixture in the works, the work mounting sections is moved and is stopped when the next work comes to the third position, and the liquid mixture is likewise injected to and applied on the work. The above operation is repeated, so that injection of the liquid mixture to works, supplying works onto the work mounting section and discharging them therefrom are sequentially executed while the work mounting sections are intermittently rotated around the circle.

Abstract: An apparatus for painting a portion of a two piece shell of a brake booster joined together by a caulking operation. The two pieces are disposed in opposing relationship to each other, and a shear caulking operation is applied to the outer periphery thereof at a plurality of locations, thereby joining the pieces together to define a shell. The shell is held so as to be rotatable about its axis, and a nozzle of a paint applicator is disposed in opposing relationship with the outer periphery of the shell. • Patent number: 5180606
Abstract: Apparatus for applying a controlled amount of reagent to one or more miscroscope slide or the like includes a spray chamber and a carousel adapted to hold a plurality of slides and to be mounted for rotation in the spray chamber. Nozzles are mounted to spray reagent onto the slides in the carousel as they rotate by the nozzles. Accurate control of the time or angular rotation during which the reagent is sprayed from the nozzles is obtained by placing a control valve in the flow line between a reagent pump and the nozzle and operating the valve to control flow of reagent. Control circuitry determines the position of the slides and carousel in the spray chamber and coordinates operation of the pumps, valves, and rotation of the carousel to accurately cause spray of reagent onto the slides. The slide holding carousel may be replaced by an interchangable centrifuge rotor when it is desired to perform cytocentrifuging tests.

  • Patent number: 5178902
Abstract: Two methods are provided for applying and forming a protective composite coating on a metallic substrate. In the first method, the substrate is heated to a temperature between about 175.degree. C. and 275.degree. C. and a powdered coating of epoxy resin between 100 and 400 microns thick is applied to the outer surface of the heated substrate. A premixed powder coating of epoxy resin and polyolefin is applied directly onto the epoxy resin coating, forming an interlayer of interspersed domains of epoxy and polyolefin between about 100 and 400 microns in thickness. On to this, powdered polyolefin is sprayed to produce a polyolefin sheath coating for the metallic substrate between 200 and 1000 microns in thickness. In the second embodiment of the method, the interlayer is formed by spraying pure epoxy resin powder and polyolefin powder from separate sources simultaneously onto the substrate. By these methods, a metallic substrate coated with a composite epoxy/polyolefin protective coating is produced.

On the rollor cylinder mantle, fixed to the outer face of the frame mantle, there is a resilient polymer coating, and onto said polymer coating a coating is fixed which is by several orders thinner than the radial thickness of the polymer coating. Said coating fixed onto the outer face of the polymer coating is a metal, ceramic, or cermet coating or a plastic coating. The invention further concerns a method for the manufacture of a roll coating in accordance with the invention as well as the use of such rolls and coatings.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for coating a fastener with head and shank portions is disclosed. The invention includes the steps of and apparatus for transferring the fasteners from a feed mechanism such that the fasteners are positioned for coating. The fasteners are then conveyed through a plurality of operating stations, beginning with a heating station where the shank portions of the fasteners are heated. Subsequently, at a material applying station, a coating material is applied to the heated shank portions. A preferred embodiment of the method and apparatus of the present invention includes using a magnetic holder to carry the fasteners horizontally by their head portions, heating the shank portion to a temperature above the melting point of the applied material and applying the material to the heated shank portion to form a coating thereon. The magnetic holders are part of an endless traveling belt that rotates continually. The fastener carriers have teeth that engage a rack to rotate the fasteners.

  • Patent number: 5145710
Abstract: A metallic coating is applied to threaded sections on the ends of plastic pipes that are to be forcefully screwed together. Droplets of a metal or metallic alloy are sprayed against the threaded sections at a high velocity, at a selectable angle of impingement, and within a zone of impingement. During the spraying, the pipe is turned and also moved relative to the zone of impingement in a longitudinal direction of the pipe. The resulting metallic coating on the pipes, beneficially, is porous so that such coating may contain lubricant, for instance. The apparatus for carrying out the spraying method includes a rotable pipe-holding device, and an arc metal spray unit having a nozzle whose direction of emission is adjustable.
