Abstract: The invention relates to the use of PVD technique for the application of a low static friction and wear resistant coating consisting essentially of titanium nitride or a diamond-like carbon—DLC, with or without an addition of tungsten carbide, on a stainless steel, in one and the same operation as the surface hardening of the stainless steel. In this way, in one single operation, a low static friction is obtained on a very hard and wear resistant surface. Moreover, the dimensions of the work-piece are maintained unaltered, which makes the invention very useful in the production of, e.g., cam followers, cylinder tubes and piston rods for shock absorbers. The used stainless steel has the following composition (in weight %): carbon max about 0.1; nitrogen max about 0.1; copper from about 0.5 to about 4; chromium from about 10 to about 14; molybdenum from about 0.5 to about 6; nickel from about 7 to about 11; cobalt 0 to about 9; tantalum max about 0.1; niobium max about 0.1; vanadium max 0.

Abstract: A pre-alloyed stabilized zirconia powder suitable for use in thermal barrier applications is formed by alloying zirconia with a stabilizer, such as yttria, and processing the alloyed stabilized zirconia to form a very fine powder. The raw powder is then spray-dried to produce an agglomerated powder having an average particle size suitable for use in spray coating applications. The resulting powder can be used in a thermal-spray application to produce a porous thermal barrier coating having a substantially decreased thermal conductivity when compared to conventional TB coatings, such those produced using plasma-densified powders.

Abstract: New tungsten carbides alloyed with fluorine in amounts up to 0.5 wt % and possibly with fluorocarbon compositions are described. It is possible to produce them by means of a new process of chemical vapor deposition, in which tungsten hexafluoride, hydrogen and a carbon-containing gas are used. A specific feature of the new process is the preliminary thermal activation of the carbon-containing gas. The tungsten carbide coatings are deposited on construction materials and items made from them. They possess enhanced resistance to wear, corrosion and chemicals.

Abstract: A component capable of being exposed to a plasma in a process chamber has a structure having an electroplated coating comprising yttrium-containing species. The electroplated coating is resistant to corrosion in the plasma, and can have a compositional gradient of yttrium-containing species through a thickness of the coating. In one embodiment, the coating is formed by electroplating a layer comprising yttrium onto the surface, and then electroplating a second layer onto the first layer, and annealing the first and second layers. The second layer can comprise aluminum or zirconium. In another embodiment, the coating is formed by electroplating a layer comprising a mixture of aluminum and yttrium onto the surface and annealing the layer.
