  • Patent number: 7238429
Abstract: Performance and reliability of microelectromechanical system (MEMS) components enhanced dramatically through the incorporation of protective thin film coatings. Current-generation MEMS devices prepared by the LIGA technique employ transition metals such as Ni, Cu, Fe, or alloys thereof, and hence lack stability in oxidizing, corrosive, and/or high temperature environments. Fabrication of a superhard, self-lubricating coating based on a ternary boride compound AlMgB14 is described in this letter as a potential breakthrough in protective coating technology for LIGA microdevices. Nanoindentation tests show that hardness of AlMgB14 films prepared by pulsed laser deposition ranges from 45 GPa to 51 GPa, when deposited at room temperature and 573 K, respectively. Extremely low friction coefficients of 0.04-0.05, which are thought to result from a self-lubricating effect, have also been confirmed by nanoscratch tests on the AlMgB14 films.

  • Patent number: 7211333
Abstract: The present invention is to provide a resin-forming mold having high releasability and permitting a production without increasing production costs. The resin-forming mold can be used to produce a resin-molded product having minute uneven portions on a front face thereof, such as a surface light source device-use light guide for a liquid crystal display, an aspherical micro-lens, micro-Fresnel lens and an optical disk. In the stamper (resin-forming mold) 10 provided with an electroformed layer 11 and a conductive film 12 formed on the electroformed layer 11, the front face layer 12c of the conductive film 12 is formed of aluminum and a back face 12d is formed of nickel as an electroconductive metal. In addition, the constituent composition of the aluminum and the nickel continuously changes from the front face 12c toward the back face 12d. The front face 12c may be formed of aluminum and oxygen. The aluminum may combine with the oxygen to form an oxide of aluminum.

  • Patent number: 6991855
Abstract: Reactive foils and their uses are provided as localized heat sources useful, for example, in ignition, joining and propulsion. An improved reactive foil is preferably a freestanding multilayered foil structure made up of alternating layers selected from materials that will react with one another in an exothermic and self-propagating reaction. Upon reacting, this foil supplies highly localized heat energy that may be applied, for example, to joining layers, or directly to bulk materials that are to be joined. This foil heat-source allows rapid bonding to occur at room temperature in virtually any environment (e.g., air, vacuum, water, etc.). If a joining material is used, the foil reaction will supply enough heat to melt the joining materials, which upon cooling will form a strong bond, joining two or more bulk materials.

Abstract: With an Al—Cu bonded structure, an Ag layer can be remained at the Al—Cu bonding interlayer providing ductile deformation behavior and a tensile strength at the bonded interlayer similar to that of the Al base material. This results in superior bonding characteristics. Furthermore, a thin Al—Cu bonded structure can be obtained as a result of using the Al—Cu dissimilar material bonded section, which has superior workability, as the base material to perform rolling for wall-thickness reduction. The thin Al—Cu structure has superior dimensional accuracy and can meet diverse dimensional demands. The structure combines the light weight of Al with its particular heat transfer and heat dissipative characteristics and anti-corrosive properties of Cu, allowing it to meet the compact, thin, light-weight, and high-performance needs of electronic devices. The structure can be widely used in heat exchanges and heat transfer devices.

Abstract: A low cost aluminide process for moderate temperature applications. A gas turbine engine component is cleaned and coated with a layer of metal, generally aluminum, containing paint. The metal containing paint layer is heated to a first temperature for a first period of time in an air environment to volatilize the solvents in the paint. The metal containing paint layer is heated to a second temperature for a second period of time in an oxygen-free atmosphere to volatilize the solvents in the paint. The now metal layer and component are heated to a third temperature for a third period of time to interdiffuse the metal and the metal of the component. The component and diffusion layer are then cooled to ambient temperature.

Abstract: The invention encompasses a method of bonding a first mass to a second mass. A first mass of first material and a second mass of second material are provided and joined in physical contact with one another. The first and second masses are then diffusion bonded to one another simultaneously with the development of grains of the second material in the second mass. The diffusion bonding comprises solid state diffusion between the first mass and the second mass. A predominate portion of the developed grains in the second material have a maximum dimension of less than 100 microns. The invention also encompasses methods of forming a physical vapor deposition target bonded to a backing plate.

  • Patent number: 6709769
Abstract: A method is described for the manufacture of a Copper-Aluminium-Copper component (C-A-C “sandwich”) which can be used in the production of multilayer printed circuit boards, obtained by means of joining two external sheets of copper to one internal sheet of aluminium by means of a process of electro-mechanical joining, which does not require the use of additional material (such as, for example, an adhesive) and guarantees a consistently high level of quality. The joining process, normally continuous, is based on the use of a sonotrode to effect ultrasonic welding, wherein a single ultrasonic weld provides two joining zones between the two external copper sheets and the one internal aluminium sheet. According to a further embodiment, the component is manufactured with at least one layer of resin deposited externally on one of the external faces of the two copper sheets, which are not into contact with the internal aluminium sheet.
