  • Patent number: 7344817
Abstract: The present invention relates to methods of drying and recovering toner particles from a liquid carrier. The methods are very effective to generate discrete, substantially non-agglomerated dry toner particles in a manner that preserves the particle size and particle distribution of the wet particles. The resultant dried toner particles free-flowing with a relatively narrow particle size distribution. The present invention uses electrical phenomena to help transfer charged toner particles from a liquid carrier onto a substrate surface. In practical effect, the particles are electrically plated onto the surface. Because the resultant coating has a relatively large drying surface area per gram of particle incorporated into the coating, drying may occur relatively quickly under moderate temperature and pressure conditions. After drying, the dried toner particles are readily recovered and may then be used in dry or even wet toners for electrophotographic applications.

The toner has a small particle size enough for enabling uniform dispersion and being excellent in color saturation and transparency. The toner also shows higher contribution to the environmental security. The toner includes a coloring agent of which at least a part of the surface is covered with polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA).

  • Patent number: 7153624
Abstract: A toner and to a method for producing a plastic toner, especially for electrophotography. The base material for the toner, a powder for powder coating, is used and has a grain size distribution of from 1 to 20 ?m, particularly 5 to 15 ?m, and has additional charge control agents and additives on the surface. According to the method, convected powders for powder coating are used as the base material. In a mixing step, the powders are mixed with charge control agents (CCA) for improving surface charge and optionally in a further mixing step with additives for improving the flow properties, the adhesive power and the agglomeration propensity.

  • Patent number: 7141347
Abstract: A toner manufacturing process capable of providing a toner with uniform charge amounts. A mixture of a synthetic resin having an acidic leaving group and a coloring agent as essential components is emulsified in an aqueous solution to produce synthetic resin particles containing the coloring agent. If desired, the resin particles are further aggregated to form aggregated resin particles. The synthetic resin particles are then separated, washed and dried. The washing of the toner particles is conducted using a washing water prepared by dissolving carbon dioxide in water with a conductivity of not more than 20 ?S/cm.

Abstract: The present invention relates to amphipathic copolymeric binder particles chemically grown in a substantially nonaqueous liquid carrier to form an organosol. The invention also pertains to dry particulate electrographic toners incorporating an organosol comprising an amphipathic copolymer wherein the amphipathic copolymer incorporates one or more S portions and one or more D portions. Methods of making dry electrophotographic toner particles, and methods of electrographically forming an image on a substrate using these toners, are also described. Preferably, fluidized drying techniques are used to form the dry toner particles from the organosol.
