    Abstract: The present invention provides an IR-sensitive composition, which includes: a polymeric binder; and a free radical polymerizable system consisting of: at least one component selected from unsaturated free radical polymerizable monomers, oligomers which are free radical polymerizable and polymers containing C═C bonds in the backbone and/or in the side chain groups; and an initiator system, which includes: (a) at least one compound capable of absorbing IR radiation; (b) at least one compound capable of producing radicals; and (c) at least one carboxylic co-initiator, provided that the total acid number of the polymeric binder is 70 mg KOH/g or less. The present invention further provides a printing plate precursor, a process for preparing the printing plate and a method of producing an image.

The liquid oligomer is preferably the acrylated or methacrylated reaction product of a diisocyanate, a liquid hydrophobic polyalkylene oxide, and a diol that is at least one of polypropylene oxide and a copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide, where reaction with a hydroxy-containing acrylate or methacrylate compound incorporates terminal acrylate or methacrylate groups into the oligomer. The photopolymerizable blend may be used to form printing plates for flexographic printing, where the plates have a reduced tendency to pick up paper fibers, dust and dried ink during the printing process. Methodology for preparing the printing plates, and printing with the printing plates of the invention is also provided.

    Abstract: This patent describes an on-press ink and/or fountain solution developable lithographic printing plates having on a substrate a thermosensitive layer capable of hardening upon exposure to an infrared radiation. The plate can be imagewise exposed with an infrared radiation and then on-press developed with ink and/or fountain solution by rotating the plate cylinder and engaging ink and/or fountain solution roller. The developed plate can then directly print images to the receiving sheets. The imagewise exposure can be performed off the press or with the plate being mounted on the plate cylinder of a lithographic press.
