Abstract: An Amphibious Vehicle (AV) is capable of planing with less power than prior similar size amphibious vehicles and using mostly off-the-shelf part. The AV uses an outdrive and propellor instead of a pump, and also include leading rear wheel well flaps which are spring biased forward against the hull bottom for on-road use, and pivot back to fill a gap between the hull and rear tire, reducing drag during in-water use. The combination of the propellor and wheel well flap allows planing with less horse power. An engine faces to the rear and either reversing differentials to reversing carrier and hubs provide correct wheel rotation. A reversing gear box attaches to an engine front and reverses rotation providing correct rotation for an outdrive and propellor.

Abstract: One of the challenges in the operation of an airboat is to insure that the boat can be stopped quickly and safely and can turn left or right as needed. This is compounded by the fact that airboats typically move on the top surface of the water and there is very little boat surface below the surface of the water. Abstract: A vehicle capable of driving on land, air or water comprises of a fuselage (1), a main engine or a main motor, and a power control and transmitting system. A main shaft (2) is provided at two sides of the fuselage. Blade sleeves (6) are fixed to the main shafts. Blade handles (7) capable of spinning around own axes are mounted on the blade sleeves. Blades are fixed to the blade handles. Blade open-close devices are installed on the fuselage and/or on the main shafts to control the blades to rotate relative to the blade sleeves and the main shafts. The blade open-close device is a mechanism that can open and close the blades once a cycle of rotating along with the main shaft. When opened, blades' broad flat surfaces are parallel or generally parallel with the main shafts. When closed, the blades' broad flat surfaces are perpendicular or generally perpendicular to the main shafts.

Abstract: An amphibian (1) for use on land and water, comprising: a hull having a planing surface (2), and at least one retractable suspension apparatus (4) movable from a vehicle supporting position to a retracted position, comprising for each wheel (5), upper and lower suspension arms (8, 9) that are pivotably connected at inboard ends to a support structure within the hull; and are pivotably connected at outboard ends to a suspension upright (7). Upright (7) extends from a first, upper connection past a second, lower connection to a location (10) for a wheel hub mounting. The suspension upright when deployed in land use extends externally of the hull across a side face (2?) of the planing surface; while lower suspension arm (9) remains above the top of planing surface (2) throughout use of the amphibian on land. This suspension arrangement allows the hull to have no cutouts in its planing surface.

Abstract: A method of using a wide, flat-bottom, buoyant, amphibious hull with a powered articulating member mounted on the deck. The hull is propelled by at least one engine-driven propeller rotating above the hull. The hull has a shallow draft and distributes its weight over a large area. These features cooperatively provide a vehicle capable of performing overhead work, such as installing or servicing power transmission poles, towers, or other structures located in environmentally sensitive wetlands, swamps, marshes, shallow water, or other terrain.

Abstract: An amphibious, all-terrain vehicle utilizing a pair of hydrostatic pumps to independently provide power to hydraulic drive mechanisms of the left and right side of the vehicle respectively. The hydraulic drive mechanisms on a side of the vehicle comprise a plurality of hydraulic wheel motors and a hydraulic propeller motor. Using a novel hydraulic manifold assembly, the vehicle can operate in three distinct modes: wheels only, wheels and propellers, and propellers only. The hydraulic manifold assembly also allow the vehicle to by put in neutral mode for starting. The wheel motors are mounted in a pair of undercarriage assemblies that are outside of the vehicle's body and fluidly connected to the hydraulic manifold assembly thorough a hose chase that extends well above the vehicle's waterline to eliminate the potential for water to enter the body of the vehicle when operated in the water.

  • Patent number: 7874259
Abstract: Road and marine steering means in an amphibious vehicle are linked so that the ratio between them is variable. In a first embodiment, an arm connects a lever to a steering rack. A cable operates the marine steering means. The lever pivots about a pin, which may be moved along a slot by the motor and gearbox driving screw shaft. At pin position A, full road steering travel x is achieved with minimal marine steering travel. At pin position B, road and marine steering have equal travel x?; and at position C, full marine steering travel z is achieved with minimal road steering travel y. In a further embodiment, a lever arm fixed to steering rack casing has a cam profile constraining pin. Full marine steering travel z of the cable is achieved over rack travel y. The steering wheel controls both road and marine steering.
