Tool Wear Compensation Patents (Class 451/21)
  • Patent number: 5624301
Abstract: The invention covers a method and a mechanism for the simultaneous machining of profile sections of one and the same work piece by two grinding wheels. Acc. to the method first the finish-grinding positions of the two grinding wheels (4.1 and 4.2) are calculated. After moving the two grinding wheels (4.1 and 4.2) into these positions these two grinding wheels (4.1 and 4.2) are profiled by the dressing tool (1) to generate a surface/roughness suitable for rough-grinding. Then the two grinding wheels (4.1 and 4.2) are moved into the calculated rough-grinding positions and then this operation takes place. Then the two grinding wheels (4.1 and 4.2) are moved into the finish-grinding positions followed by dressing to generate the surface/roughness for finish grinding. Acc. to the mechanism the grinding slides (14.1 and 14.2) are arranged in such a way that the two grinding wheels (4.1 and 4.2) have a common axis of rotation (15).

  • Patent number: 5582536
Abstract: It is an object of the present invention to provide an apparatus and a method for manufacturing a wafer, which are the most suitable for meeting the requirement for the mirror grinding surface of the wafer's chamfering portion. As a result, when the ingot is sliced, a wafer being sliced is chamfered at the same time. And, it is also possible that before the ingot starts to be sliced by the blade, the grindstone is pressed against the outer periphery of the slicing position to form a V-shaped groove along the outer periphery of the slicing position, so that the chamfering can be performed.

  • Patent number: 5567195
Abstract: A method and apparatus for initially taking an individual bar from a supply of bars and placing it on an entry conveyor while preventing movement of the remaining bars. Other mechanisms are provided for adjusting the entry conveyor to accommodate the diameter of the bars to be ground. The individual bars to be ground are initially moved into position between a regulating wheel and a grinding wheel. The regulating wheel maintains the bar against the grinding wheel and the movement of the regulating wheel toward the grinding wheel during the grinding action is sensed by an encoder device. The encoder device in turn signals to a servomotor to move the grinding wheel an amount equal to but in the opposite direction to the regulating wheel to compensate for the wearing of the grinding wheel. The regulating wheel is set at a slight angle relative to the bar to impose a vector force that moves the bar through the grinding station to the exit conveyor from where the bar is subsequently moved to a holding area.

  • Patent number: 5560096
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a distal femoral knee prosthesis includes the initial step of forming a rough prosthesis workpiece member that has the approximate size and shape of a final polished distal femoral prosthesis. The rough prosthesis workpiece member can be a casting, forging or a rough machined part. The prosthesis member is then attached to a fixator and movably supported adjacent a rotary grinder. Relative motion between the rotary grinder and the prosthesis is controlled with a computer. An articular surface of the prosthesis is shaped by engaging the prosthesis with the rotary grinder. The workpiece is primarily polished to remove "scallops" that form on the outer surface during a shaping with the rotary grinder. The prosthesis workpiece member is then secondarily polished until the articular surface provides a highly polished mirror finish.

  • Patent number: 5533931
Abstract: A grinding wheel for grinding a workpiece has a first grinding surface and a second grinding surface successive thereto. The first and second grinding surfaces are parallel to and inclined with respect to the rotational axis of the workpiece, respectively. A diameter of the workpiece to be ground in a next grinding operation is measured in advance. An angle to be formed between the second grinding surface and the rotational axis of the workpiece is selected based upon the measured diameter of the workpiece. The selected angle is established between the second grinding surface and the rotational axis of the workpiece. The grinding wheel is moved relative to the workpiece in a direction of the rotational axis of the workpiece, whereby the cylindrical surface of the workpiece is firstly ground by the second grinding surface and subsequently ground by the first grinding surface of the grinding wheel.

Abstract: A grinding wheel wear compensator for determining a correct position for a grinding wheel that wears in grinding operation performed on a workpiece so that high grinding accuracy can be ensured. In the grinding wheel wear compensator, in accordance with a desired grinding pattern, a tool centre determining unit determines a tool centre point from a two-dimensional section of the grinding wheel, the section being cut off in an axial direction of the grinding wheel so as to pass its rotary axis and detected by a section detecting unit. Based on the positional difference between the tool centre point determined and a reference point, a wear correction value calculating unit calculates a wear correction value to be used for determining the correct position for the grinding wheel.
