  • Patent number: 8021213
Abstract: An acrylic polisher includes: a base with two oppositely disposed sideboards with a notch on each of them and a disposition surface in between, a cutting blade set performing a cutting process along the edge of the disposition surface, a stopping board driven by a driving device to move up and downs with respect to the disposition surface. When the stopping board moves downward to the side of the disposition surface, a machining span is formed between the stopping board and the disposition surface. Therefore, as the stopping board lowers to the side of the base, the operator only needs to push an acrylic object toward the stopping board and can quickly obtain the required machining span. The notches on the sideboards of the base form an open space around the disposition surface. The length of the acrylic object is thus not restricted.

Abstract: A honing head for microburnishing surface of a recording/reproducing disc to a smoothness at which asperities are limited to submicron heights including a hardened contact bearing surface having an array of depressions with abrupt trailing edges interconnected by recessed channels leading outwardly from the honing head. The array of channels span a band in which an asperity may be present, and the sharp edges shear off the asperities within the band which extend above the chosen submicroinch height, with the separated particulates being passed through the recesses and channel system to the outer edge of the honing head. The trailing edges act to shear off the unwanted heights of the asperities, while the recesses enable pressure differentials and air flows to direct the separated particulates outwardly relative to the disc, centripetal forces of rotation bearing the particulates from the disc.

  • Patent number: 6007413
Abstract: Midspan access to selected optical fibers which are encapsulated in an optical ribbon or tube is achieved by placing the desired span of the encapsulated fibers to be accessed between opposing abrasive layers and controllably urging at least one of the abrasive layers in the direction of the opposing abrasive layer to cause both abrasive layers to contact the encapsulant which covers the fibers. The amount of force applied to the at least one abrasive layer is limited by the structure of a resilient element which is coupled to the abrasive surface. Stress concentrators are created in the encapsulant and the encapsulant is removed from the span portion by relative movement of the encapsulated fibers and the abrasive layers. A minimum separation distance between the opposing abrasive layers can be defined, according to the thickness of the specific encapsulated fiber medium undergoing fiber separation, to avoid contact between the abrasive surfaces and the fibers within the medium.

Abstract: A method of and apparatus for burnishing a surface of a magnetic disc of a disc drive are disclosed. The disc drive has a data head and an actuator supporting the head as the head flies above the surface of the disc. A controller causes the disc to be rotated at rates of rotation which will result in burnishing head fly heights which are less than a normal operational fly height of the head. An actuator controller controls the actuator to repeatedly move the head across a region of the disc during a burnishing time period. The head flies above the surface of the disc at the burnishing fly heights during the burnishing time period to thereby reduce asperities on the disc.
