Abstract: An apparatus and method for cutting a material using a water jet. A central shaft is mounted so as to extend outward from a material to be cut. A support member is mounted on the central shaft so as to extend transversely therefrom. At least one water jet cutting head is mounted on the support member so as to be translatable therealong. In addition, the at least one water jet cutting head is mounted so as to be rotatable about the central shaft. By controlling the translatory and rotational motion of the at least one water jet cutting head (for example, using computer numerical control or other computer control), a desired cut pattern can be followed with respect to the material being cut.

Abstract: A method for producing an implant whose surface is roughened by the sandblast method using shot material containing fluoroapatite. Fluoroapatite, compared to hydroxyapatite, has poor biocompatibility, but is superior in hardness. It also has a property of being dissolved in acid. As a result, by the sandblast method using shot material containing fluoroapatite, the surface roughening is performed quite effectively, and shot materials remained on the surface can easily be removed by acid.

Abstract: A contour follower includes a plurality of sensors spaced around a waterjet nozzle, each of the sensors being configured to measure a distance between a working surface and a first plane, perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the nozzle. The sensors may include hall-effect sensors lying in the first plane and magnets lying in a second plane, parallel to the working surface. A detecting circuit processes signals from the sensors to determine an angle of the working surface, relative to the first plane, and a distance between an aperture of the nozzle and the working surface. A collision detection sensor provides a signal in the event the device approaches to within a selected distance of an obstruction in the plane of the working surface. A shield plate blocks and dampens secondary spray-back of cutting fluid occurring at low angles above the working surface.

Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide multi-head fluid jet cutting systems and methods of utilizing such devices. A multi-head fluid jet cutting system includes a body having a plurality of fluid jet cutting heads installed therein. Each cutting head receives pressurized fluid from an intensifier and directs the fluid along a jet axis out of a nozzle of the head to form a cutting stream. In some embodiments, an abrasive material can be mixed with the fluid to form an abrasive fluid cutting stream. The body can be mounted to a motion system which moves the body, and therefore the cutting heads, relative to a work piece mounted upon a work bed. Each of the fluid jet cutting heads is coupled to an actuator which can control an on/off state of the cutting head. In some embodiments, an actuator mounting plate is provided to enable mounting of the actuators off of the jet axes.

Abstract: According to a method of the present invention for remedying a defect of a glass substrate, abrasive grains (12a) made of alumina are jetted toward a protrusion (1p) which is located in a portion where an internal bubble (1b) is formed in a glass substrate (1) so that a glass material in a region including the internal bubble (1b) is removed. Thus, it is possible to completely remedy the internal bubble (1b) of the glass substrate (1) without damaging the glass substrate (1).

  • Patent number: 7762113
Abstract: A metallic article with improved fatigue performance and resistance to corrosive attack and stress corrosion cracking is produced by treating a first area of a metallic article with a first surface treatment that induces a specified amount of cold work. A second, sacrificial area of the metallic article in electrical communication with the first area is treated with a second surface treatment that induces an amount of cold work higher than that of the first surface treatment. Due to the differences in cold work resulting from the different surface treatments, the second area of the metallic article is less noble than the first area and is therefore more susceptible to corrosive attack. As a result, the second sacrificial area will preferentially corrode leaving the first area protected from corrosive attack. Compressive residual stresses induced in the surface of the metallic article through the surface treatments improve the fatigue performance and resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
