Switching Or Routing Patents (Class 455/428)
  • Publication number: 20040180654
Abstract: The disclosed multiple alerting service, provided through a mobile communication network, is controlled by the subscriber's home location register (HLR) and/or the mobile switching center (MSC) provisioned as the home MSC for the pilot number. A call to the pilot number triggers access of the subscriber record in the HLR, and the home MSC launches call legs to the subscriber's mobile station and one or more member numbers. An alternate available member number may be substituted, for example, if a station of one of the initial numbers is unavailable. If a call leg is answered, the home system completes the call to that leg and releases the other call leg(s). If completion to a group station is not possible, the home system redirects the call to an alternate termination, based on the subscriber's record, for example, to a voice mailbox associated with the pilot number in the home system.

Abstract: Systems and methods for exchanging a short message service (SMS) message between networks operating in accordance with different standards. An intermediary system operates between a first network operating in accordance with a first standard and a second network operating in accordance with a second standard. A routing information request for an SMS message is received, at the intermediary, from the first network and the intermediary sends, in response to the routing information request, an acknowledgement message to the first network. The SMS message is thereafter received at the intermediary and an acknowledgement of receipt of the SMS message is generated in the intermediary and then sent to the first network. The SMS message is then sent from the intermediary to the second network. In a preferred embodiment, the intermediary is an entity distinct from the first and second networks, but operates as a virtual MSC from the perspective of the first and second networks.

The geographical location of the subscriber's mobile cellular telephone is tracked using registration signals transmitted over the control channel by the cellular telephone. This information is supplied to a geographical location coordinator system, which determines the geographical coordinates for the cellular telephone. The system and method combines preliminary return channel information and path discovery information into polling messages transmitted by a ground station. A mobile platform responding to the polling messages relayed from one of a plurality of satellite based transponders transmits a response on the designated preliminary return channel and includes the path discovery information in its response. The path discovery information informs the ground station of the precise route through various components of the forward link communications path that the polling message took in reaching the mobile platform. Combining the path discovery information and the return channel information into the forward link polling messages saves important transponder bandwidth.

  • Patent number: 6718263
Abstract: The present invention utilizes a combination of local area networks and hard-wired wide area networks which communicate with mobile units wirelessly. An alternate embodiment uses a hard wired communication from a mobile unit to a base computer. The wireless local area network is comprised of a base computer unit connected wirelessly to single or multiple mobile units while also being connected to a hard-wired wide area network (such as the internet). The base unit either stores or routes packet data to a wide area network super router that, in turn, routes packets to the base unit computer where the packet data should ultimately reside. The present invention utilizes integrated software and hardware apparatus to identify, track and report tax-deductible vehicle travel routes including actual mileage, stops and routes driven.

  • Patent number: 6714777
Abstract: A proxy switch, communication methods, and communication logic for use in a mobile network are described. A proxy switch is deployed between a base station subsystem and a mobile station center. It receives signaling messages and either retransmits them, blocks them, converts them, or siphons them to an alternative network. Besides providing an ability to offload offload mobile traffic it provides a platform for new communication services. The proxy switch includes signaling message handling logic that receives signaling messages from the MSC and BS in accordance with a mobile signaling protocol. State logic maintains state information of call sessions and mobile stations (MSs) used within the mobile communications network. Message interception logic detects whether a signaling message from an MSC is a new call originating message and if an MS addressed in such a new call originating message is involved in a call.

Abstract: A space-based network router architecture (20) is disclosed. The router includes an array-of-processors architecture (20) for routing uplink and downlink traffic of a communications system (10). The architecture comprises multiple node interface chips (26) linked to one another via horizontal and vertical rings (22, 24), thus forming a mesh (21). Associated with each node interface chip (26) is a processor (28) and either a demodulator (30) or modulator (32). Each node interface chip (26) selectively transfers a signal depending upon the particular signal's destination and processing requirements. The router architecture (20) provides scalabitly, fault-tolerance and flexibility, as well as structural advantages over present router systems.

  • Patent number: 6711411
Abstract: Operation of a synchronization network that includes a number of nodes and reference clock distribution logic includes, at each of the nodes, storing a table that represents a most recent status of the synchronization network. Reference clocks are then distributed to each node in the synchronization network. If a change in synchronization status occurs at a node in the synchronization network, this change is detected. The table at the node is updated to represent an updated status of the synchronization network. Then, a synchronization network management protocol is used to distribute the updated status to other nodes in the synchronization network. Other nodes may change their status in response to receipt of the updated information, and information about these additional updates are distributed throughout the synchronization network in a similar manner, thereby facilitating control of the synchronization network.

  • Patent number: 6678519
Abstract: An elliptical satellite communication system including a constellation of satellites which orbit the earth at a height less than that necessary for geosynchronous orbits but which simulate the characteristics of geosynchronous orbits. The satellites' velocity near the apogee portion of their orbit approximates the rotational velocity of the earth, and during that period appear to hover over the earth. The ground stations on the earth always communicate with a satellite at or near its apogee, and hence that satellite appears to the ground station to hover over the earth. During the times when the satellite is outside the apogee portion, its communication is shut off to prevent any possibility of interfering with geosynchronous satellites and its power supply is used to charge a battery on the satellite. Thus, the power supply of the system can be reduced by an amount equivalent to the percentage of time the satellite is not used.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for mitigating communications interference between satellite communications systems in different orbits is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of evaluating a geometrical relationship between a second ground station and the satellites in the second satellite constellation, and directing communications between the second ground station and the second satellite according to the evaluated geometrical relationship. In one embodiment communications are handed over from a first satellite to another satellite when the first satellite is no longer at the highest elevation angle of visible satellites. In another embodiment, handover occurs when the first satellite drops below a minimum elevation angle.

  • Publication number: 20040002329
Abstract: A system and related method for supporting non-intrusive and effective voice communication among mobile users in which voice calls between mobile users are managed based on callee availability, caller-callee relationships, and non-intrusive information exchange, including interactive exchange at the time of call setup but prior to the call being answered. Callee availability can be based on callee device status, calendar activities, location, past behavior and other factors. The caller-callee relationships specify whether the callee is available, unavailable or on restricted availability relative to the caller. The interactive exchange can be implemented using voice and/or text/graphic displays on caller and callee mobile device. Callees are provided with options for handling the call. Callers are provided with information regarding the callee's current and future availability and willingness to receive a voice call from the caller, thus maximizing the chance of caller reaching the callee on every voice call.
