  • Patent number: 8340664
Abstract: Techniques for performing cell reselection in a wireless communication system are described. A user equipment (UE) may initially camp on a first cell. While camped on the first cell, the UE may identify second and third cells deemed to be better than the first cell. The UE may move from the first cell to the second cell without performing cell reselection to camp on the second cell. After moving to the second cell, the UE may obtain at least one cell reselection parameter for the second and/or third cell and may update the rankings of the second and third cells based on the cell reselection parameter(s). The UE may then perform cell reselection from the first cell to the second or third cell based on the updated rankings, e.g., perform inter-frequency cell reselection from the first cell to the third cell without actually camping on the second cell.

Abstract: A method, application server, and Serving Call/Session Control Function (S-CSCF) for allocating a SIP Application Server to a subscriber in an IP Multimedia Subsystem. A Home Subscriber Server (HSS) identifies for the subscriber, a set of provisioned initial filter criteria, which contains at least one generic SIP Application Server identity. The HSS sends the filter criteria to an S-CSCF allocated to the subscriber. The S-CSCF resolves the generic SIP Application Server identity into a plurality of application server addresses, with one of the addresses being allocated to the subscriber for use in provisioning a service to the subscriber. The S-CSCF caches the address allocated to the subscriber for subsequent use.

  • Patent number: 8331921
Abstract: In embodiments of managing subscribers on a cellular network, a service provider tracks subscriber devices that are connected for voice communication via a network. The service provider can estimate an increased service load on the network by combining a number of the subscriber devices estimated to still be connected at an appointed time with a number of additional subscriber devices estimated to request connection at or within a predetermined range of the appointed time. The service provider can then cause a number of inactive subscriber devices to be disconnected for at least a predetermined period of time in anticipation of the increased service load.

Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for facilitating selection of a radio access network with which a roaming mobile node attempts to effectuate communications pursuant to a selected communication service. Listings are maintained at the mobile node, each containing entries of networks and their communication service capabilities. Different listings identify networks of differing preference levels. Detection is made of available networks, and a selector selects with which network to attempt to communicate based upon network availability, network capability, and preference.

Abstract: Systems and methods for achieving PLMN continuity when moving between networks of different types through network selection are provided. When a mobile station moves from a first network type, such as cellular, to a second network type, such as GAN, if there is a PLMN discontinuity, this may result in a dropped call. In order to avoid this, networks for the first network type and the second network type are selected such that there is PLMN continuity. This can involve reselection of a different cellular network than one currently providing service to the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 8224323
Abstract: Techniques and systems that provide timer based registration for efficiently registering access terminals with a wireless network are described. A timer is provided for an access terminal to register with the network. When the timer expires, the access terminal performs a timer based registration process if a currently serving base station is not the same as a base station that serves the access terminal when the access terminal completes the last timer based registration process, and avoids performing another timer based registration process if the currently serving base station is the same as a base station that serves the access terminal when the access terminal completes the last timer based registration process. The access terminal resets the timer if the currently serving base station is the same as a base station that served the access terminal when the access terminal completes the last timer based registration process.

  • Patent number: 8219131
Abstract: To prevent a hung-up of communications due to changes in a radio wave condition resulting from frequent displacement of the terminals and changes in a number of the terminals, and to realize switching of the radio systems adapting to the radio condition. A radio communication system comprising: a base station for providing a plurality of radio systems, and terminals for communicating with the base station through the plurality of radio systems. The base station decides a priority of the radio system on which the each terminal will communicate thereafter and transmits paging signals of one of the plurality of radio systems which includes information on the decided priority to the each terminal.

  • Patent number: 8219080
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for producing a user-controlled PLMN list for a SIM/USIM card with use of a user agent application are disclosed. Selection indication data corresponding to at least one of a plurality of network attribute type preferences is received at the user agent application. The selection indication data may be received through a user interface of the user equipment, a user application of the user equipment, or both. The at least one selected network attribute type preference is indicative of a preference to prioritize network selection based on at least one network attribute type of a plurality of network attributes types (e.g. cost, bandwidth, quality, number of available features, etc.). A list of network identifications associated with a plurality of wireless communication networks is ranked in accordance with a ranking of network attributes of the at least one selected network attribute type made available by the plurality of wireless communication networks.

  • Patent number: 8213932
Abstract: A mechanism enabling users roaming in a visited network to specify whether they prefer to dial numbers belonging to their home network in local format or in international format from the visited network. Restrictions based on the type of call, and the geographic locations and preferences of the users involved in the call, are correspondingly applied. Information about the location of the user, taking into account the access location and user preferences, is sent from a home subscriber server to a serving call session control function entity, both in the home network of the user.
