Patent number: 7995582Abstract: Disclosed is the retransmission control method used in a mobile communication system including mobile terminals (MTs), base stations (BSs) and the radio network controller (RNC) which controls the BSs. When an MT detects data error, it sends the 1st negative acknowledgement (NACK) to the BS. This first NACK includes a cell ID which indicates the cell where the reception data is transmitted. When cell ID in this 1st NACK includes cell ID of a cell besides the cell which the BS itself manages, the BS sends the 2nd NACK to the RNC. This 2nd NACK includes the cell ID and the data number to specify the data in which the mobile terminal detected the data error. The RNC decides the BS where data is to be retransmitted based on the cell IDs in the 2nd NACK and sends data retransmission request to the decided BS.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 2006Date of Patent: August 9, 2011Assignee: NEC CorporationInventor: Mitsuhiro Kubota

Patent number: 7991362Abstract: A wireless terminal determines the position of a moving base station and determines timing and/or frequency corrections. A wireless terminal determines its relative position with respect to the base station and determines a timing adjustment correction. The wireless terminal applies the determined timing correction to control uplink signaling timing and achieve synchronization at the base station's receiver. The wireless terminal determines its relative velocity with respect to the moving base station and determines a Doppler shift adjustment which it adds to the uplink carrier frequency or to its baseband signal. Base station position is determined from the current time and stored information correlating the base station position with time, e.g., for a geo-synchronous satellite. Base station position information, e.g., a GPS derived base station position fix, is determined from downlink airlink broadcast information, e.g., for an aircraft base station.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 2005Date of Patent: August 2, 2011Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Frank A. Patent number: 7957352Abstract: Various schemes for performing inter-system handoff, e.g., from a UTRAN to a cdma2000 radio access network (RAN) are described. For a MAHHO scheme, the UTRAN uses measurements obtained by a multi-RAT device to determine suitable cdma2000 cell(s) for handover. The measurements are obtained by a candidate frequency search procedure, and the handover is accomplished by a handoff execution procedure. For a MDHHO scheme, the UTRAN relies on location information for the multi-RAT device to select suitable cdma2000 cell(s) for handover. For a CRHHO scheme, a new call is established on the cdma2000 RAN and the pending call on the UTRAN is released in a manner such that the handover appears seamless to the multi-RAT device. The multi-RAT device includes two modem processors that perform processing for the UTRAN and cdma2000 RAN and an application processor that controls the modem processors.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 2004Date of Patent: June 7, 2011Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Vieri Vanghi, Philip Kenneth Price

Patent number: 7953413Abstract: In a cellular wireless system, power thresholds used for determining whether or not to add or drop servers held in a set of servers, such as an active set, for serving a user equipment are determined on the basis of the motion of the respective user equipment. A lower threshold may be used with respect to the adding or dropping of a given server to or from a set of servers for serving a fast moving user equipment than would be used for the same server with respect to its adding or dropping to or from a set of servers for serving a slow moving user equipment, while maintaining a given quality of service. As a result, the average number of servers held in sets is reduced in a typical network that comprises a plurality of user equipments moving at different speeds, compared to a situation in which the threshold is set irrespective of the motion of a user equipment.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 2008Date of Patent: May 31, 2011Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Steven Hall, Steven Baines, David Bevan, Andrew Jeffries

Patent number: 7933604Abstract: A wireless network is used for a communication session between a mobile station and an endpoint. The wireless network receives endpoint bits representing communications from the endpoint for the mobile station and uses a first sector to transmit a forward link signal that encodes the endpoint hits. The mobile station generates mobile station hits representing communications from the mobile station for the endpoint and transmits a reverse link signal encoding the mobile station bits. A controller detects an imbalance between an error level in the forward link signal received by the mobile station and an error level in the reverse link signal received by the first sector. In response, the wireless network uses a second sector to receive the reverse link signal without using the second sector to transmit the endpoint bits. The reverse link signals received by the first and second sectors may be combined for diversity gain.Type: GrantFiled: November 5, 2007Date of Patent: April 26, 2011Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Deveshkumar Rai, Manoj Shetty, Sachin R. Patent number: 7848270Abstract: A method for minimizing energy usage in a portable unit in a wireless communications system incorporates means to locally generate information on motion of the portable unit and to adapt a transmission from the portable unit based upon such motion information so that energy usage is minimized. By applying this method, information concerning motion of the portable unit is utilized in order to adapt transmissions from the portable unit in such a way that less energy is consumed. In the case of a portable telephone, connection time is thereby primarily increased, because it is then that most energy is used for transmission. In many cases standby time is also increased because many telephones also transmit information during standby, for example during so-called roaming.Type: GrantFiled: April 25, 2006Date of Patent: December 7, 2010Assignee: Ascom Tateco ABInventor: Jesper Hilmersson

The wireless telecommunications network uses the first frequency spectrum for wireless communications with dynamic mobile stations in the high-traffic wireless coverage area and uses the second frequency spectrum for wireless communications with static mobile station in the high-traffic wireless coverage area. The wireless telecommunications network may instruct the mobile stations in the high-traffic coverage area to use the appropriate frequency spectrum.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 2007Date of Patent: June 15, 2010Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Timothy W. Wireless communication methods and components that implement handoff in wireless local area networks
Patent number: 7706326Abstract: This invention relates to wireless local area networks, and particularly to the IEEE 802.11 family of standards. It consists of a method and apparatus that can be implemented in access points (APs) and subscriber wireless transmit/receive units (WTRUs), in order to allow an AP to initiate re-association of a WTRU to itself or a different AP. The invention improves the robustness of the network by enabling more efficient load balancing, congestion control, and roaming, without compromising the user experience.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 2004Date of Patent: April 27, 2010Assignee: InterDigital Technology CorporationInventors: Paul Marinier, Vincent Roy, Christopher Cave, Frank LaSita, Angelo Cuffaro, Athmane Touag -
Patent number: 7706796Abstract: A system and method are provided for supporting a multi-mode portable user terminal (UT) hard handoff procedure for a call from a wireless local area network (WLAN) to a cellular telephone network. The method includes: establishing a link between a UT and a serving WLAN; establishing a call via the established WLAN link; monitoring the WLAN link signal strength; simultaneously monitoring a serving cellular network; initiating a hard handoff to the cellular network, responsive to the monitored WLAN link signal strength falling below a minimum threshold; and, continuing the call via the cellular network. More specifically, the method initiates a call handoff to a Cellular Gateway (CGW) telephone number, responsive to the monitored WLAN link signal strength falling below the minimum threshold. Then, continuing the call via the cellular network includes continuing the call to the first telephone number via the CGW handoff telephone number.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 2005Date of Patent: April 27, 2010Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventors: Yoram Rimoni, Eitan Yacobi
