    Abstract: Techniques to implement MBMS services in a wireless communication system. In one aspect, a method is provided for processing data for transmission to a plurality of terminals. Frames of information bits (which may have variable rates) are provided to a buffer implementing a matrix. The matrix is padded with padding bits based on a particular padding scheme to support variable frame rates. The frames are then coded based on a particular block code to provide parity bits. The frame of information bits and the parity bits are then transmitted to the terminals. In another aspect, a method is provided for controlling the transmit power of a data transmission to a plurality of terminals. In accordance with the method, TPC streams are received from the terminals and processed to obtain a stream of joint power control commands used to adjust the transmit power of the data transmission.

    Abstract: An RFID reader requires significant power supply current, upwards or beyond 0.5 amps. Much of this power is expended to activate the reader's radio frequency transmitter. For example, the reader's transmitter may constantly be active awaiting a RFID tag entering within its electromagnetic field. Sometimes an adequate power source, such as AC mains, is not available to provide continuous operation and instead a battery is powers the reader. This invention detects that a RFID tag is within reader range without using the reader's RF transmitter at full power. As a RFID tag is brought within range of a reader's antenna there is significant mutual inductance coupling between the tag antenna and the reader's antenna and this invention provides a sensitive detector of this mutual inductance. The detection of mutual inductance automatically triggers the reader's transmitter to a higher power which is necessary to fully activate the RFID tag.

In one aspect, a system includes a plurality of primary sites, each primary site including a transceiver portion configured to transmit to or receive from the transceiver portion of another primary site on a coordinated microwave path on a first frequency; a secondary site, the secondary site located in an optimized area, the secondary site including a transceiver portion, the transceiver portion of the secondary site configured to transmit to the transceiver portion of a primary site on a concurrently coordinated microwave path on the first frequency, where the optimized area is an area where interference caused by the secondary site to other transceivers that operate on a different coordinated microwave path on the first frequency is less than interference caused by a primary site to the other transceivers.

Each cell broadcasts administrative announcements over a logical channel to mobile terminals. The mobile terminals may tune to a multicast broadcast as defined by the administrative announcements. While tuned to the multicast, the mobile terminal continues to receive administrative announcements. As the broadcast fades out or is otherwise interrupted, the mobile terminal can retune to the same multicast broadcast in another cell, based on the cell connection information included in the previously received administrative announcements.
