  • Patent number: 7587206
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for controlling a radio frequency resource between a first and a second wireless unit and a base station to provide overload control of the radio frequency resource based on an estimate thereof. For example, when feedback information is unavailable for the radio frequency resource at the base station. The method includes estimating the radio frequency resource used by the first and second wireless units in a wireless data network. The method further includes providing an overload control at the base station based on the estimated radio frequency resource. Based on this estimated radio frequency resource, a command may be issued by the base station on a reverse link. For example, a rise over thermal resource may be estimated to issue a rate control command to a wireless unit. By providing a desired timely rate control command on the reverse link, the base station may control a data rate of the wireless unit, maximizing throughput of the reverse link.

  • Patent number: 7570970
Abstract: A mobile station device for selecting a TPC command to improve the transmission quality of a packet in an upstream circuit more reliably, so that it reduces the re-transmission in the upstream circuit to improve a sector throughput. In this mobile station device, a demodulate unit (210) outputs a received signal of each base station device to an error correction decode unit (220) and a TPC command select unit (240). The error correction decode unit (220) outputs an ACK/NACK of each base station device to a data re-transmission control unit (230) and the TPC command select unit (240). The TPC command select unit (240) selects the TPC command of the highest priority on the basis of the information of the ACK/NACK. A transmission power control unit (280) determines the transmission power according to the contents of the TPC command of the highest priority.

An integrated receiver/decoder (IRD) is mobile in the area around the transmitters. As well as transmitting service information as part of a network information table on a data layer, the transmitters provide in their output signals transmitter parameter information as TPS data on a physical layer. This TPS information includes information identifying whether there are other networks available, and preferably the number of other networks. Transmission parameters relating to the other networks are included in an other_network_descriptor, forming part of an NIT actual or a BAT, or alternatively in an NIT_other. This information is used by the IRD in signal scan.

  • Patent number: 7565163
Abstract: The receive power of uplink signals in a CDMA mobile communication system is measured by prohibiting a mobile station from transmitting an uplink signal including a frame over a first channel during a predetermined transmission prohibition period, and measuring a receive power of uplink signals at a base station transmitted from each of the mobile stations located in a cell during the prohibition period. Another method of measuring the receive power includes measuring a first receive power of uplink signals at a base station from each mobile station located in a cell, and measuring each second receive power of uplink signal including a frame only over a first channel transmitted from each mobile station, and then calculating a total receive power of uplink signals excluding frames over the first channel by subtracting respective second receive powers from the first receive power.

  • Patent number: 7548731
Abstract: The present invention provides for reducing power consumption of a positioning system having wireless beacons. A wireless transmitter static beacon is provided, which has a known position, signal strength, and range. A mobile device is positioned within the range of the static beacon and its position is determined based on a signal from the static beacon. Foreign wireless transmitter devices and their locations are detected. The immobility of the foreign devices is evaluated by periodically determining their positions and calculating the frequency with which their positions change, and by determining the devices' types. A subset of the foreign devices that are immobile are selected and amalgamated into the positioning system based on device type and position-changing frequency. The signal strength of the static beacon is reduced, which in turn reduces the range of the static beacon.

Abstract: The method and device proposed for wireless communications systems based on WCDMA technology modifies the desired signal to interference ratio target (SIRtarget) when it detects the exit from the wind-up condition in the mobile communication, that is, when the unwinding process has started, in order to match it to the outer loop power control in normal mode, setting for this desired signal to interference ratio target (SIRtarget) a value that is as close as possible to that which it had just before the moment of the start of the wind-up so that immediate afterwards it can continue with the correct variation determined by the power control in the normal mode of the outer loop. Thus, the unwinding time is shortened and the interference in the mobile communication system is reduced, while its capacity and the quality of its wireless connections are increased.

Abstract: A system and method is disclosed for resource block-specific control signaling in a communication system. Communication data is transmitted using a transmission channel comprising a plurality of resource blocks defined by allocating time-frequency slots in a transmission resource. Resource block control information is transmitted in a “feed-forward” manner to a user end (UE) or group of UEs using channels physically mapped into scheduled resource blocks (RBs) for that user or group of users. Embodiments of the invention provide an RB-specific control channel that comprises RB control elements that are embedded within scheduled resource blocks. The invention, therefore, reduces the amount of control information that must be transmitted by common or shared control channels.

  • Patent number: 7437175
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for determining when uplink synchronization has been achieved when entering or adding a link in soft handover to a new node in a communication system. Transmit power control (TPC) commands from the new link are not included in a TPC command combination until an uplink synchronization detector determines that synchronization has been achieved. Since in many communication systems, a pattern of TPC commands is transmitted on the new downlink as long as the new node's uplink is not synchronized, the uplink synchronization detector can determine whether synchronization has been achieved by determining whether the TPC command pattern is present in the new downlink. In this way, the UL synchronization detector reduces the occurrence and magnitude of unwanted peaks and dips in uplink transmitted power.

  • Patent number: 7428425
Abstract: A criterion for biasing a binary decision requiring an unequal protection which utilizes a measured signal to interference ratio (SIR). The SIR may be derived from a determination of channel estimation. The SIR is compared against a threshold, the threshold being selected to bias the decision toward a NACK as opposed to an ACK determination. The technique is advantageous for providing biased binary decisions for high speed downlink packets (HSDP) but may be utilized for both uplink and downlink applications.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a radio network controller and a radio base station for prioritisation of signalling radio bearers (SRB) with regard to their content to achieve an efficient resource usage. The radio network controller can retrieve knowledge about the resource status in a Node B serving a certain user equipment and request this Node B to prioritize signalling radio bearers (SRB) carrying signalling information with regard to radio resource control that is of particular importance and intended to be efficiently forwarded to said user equipment. The Node B then prioritises such signalling radio bearers and schedules the prioritized signalling radio bearers with respect to their priorities using sufficient radio resources.

  • Patent number: 7418269
Abstract: A wireless communications system has a plurality of uplink and downlink channels available for use. Channels are distributed among different operators who may plan their networks in a non-ideal manner. A terminal uses an uplink channel and a downlink channel selected from those available and performs a method to check whether it is causing interference to other users of the system. The method determines whether the terminal is transmitting at a power which may cause interference to an adjacent uplink channel. If so, the terminal determines which downlink channel is associated with the adjacent uplink channel and monitors that downlink channel. The terminal may then operate in a manner which will reduce interference.
