  • Patent number: 7346313
Abstract: Transceivers using direct conversion between baseband and RF have become popular for low-cost designs. Bandwidth-efficient modulations employ information on both phases of the carrier, and for high-order signaling alphabets, it becomes problematic to realize Direct-Conversion transceivers for which adequate gain balance between I and Q channels throughout the transmit and receive chains. For heterodyne transceivers I-Q balance is often less of an issue, by contrast, because most of the required gain operates at an Intermediate Frequency. In both cases, the trend toward lower supply voltages further exacerbates this problem because of the poorer control of analog parameters at low voltage. The present invention addresses this difficulty via a calibration method and system in which a calibration signal is generated in the transmit stage and injected into the receive stage so that any mismatches in gain can be observed and corrected.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method and an apparatus for controlling transmission electric power capable of minimizing a decrease in the amount of maximum transmission electric power without degrading an adjacent channel leakage power ratio when code-multiplexing additional control information with data and main control information. A mobile device checks values of gain factors ?d and ?c when performing code multiplexing to transmit signals from channels DPDCH to transmit data, DPCCH to transmit main control information, and HS-DPCCH to transmit additional control information. A maximum transmission electric power is decreased at a plurality of levels based on the check result and a ratio (?hs) between the gain factors ?c and ?hs. It may be preferable to check the presence or absence of transmission data instead of the gain factor ?d. In this case, when no transmission data is available, the maximum transmission electric power is decreased at a plurality of levels based on ?hs.

  • Patent number: 7110786
Abstract: A method and apparatus for transferring information over a communications link includes transmitting information at a first power level, monitoring for correct reception of the transmitted information and transmitting further information at a second, power level other than that used for the original transmission if correct reception did not occur. The further information allows the content of the originally transmitted information to be established and in one embodiment constitutes a retransmission of the originally transmitted information. By retransmitting at a different power level the probability of correct reception may be enhanced, especially when the communications link is wireless. The first and second transmission power levels are governed using closed loop power control such that transmission power level is controlled to achieve a required quality of reception parameter at the receiving end of the link. In one arrangement the quality or reception parameter is the signal-to-interference ratio.

Abstract: In a radio communication system (1), a base station (3) broadcasts, to mobile stations (2-1 to 2-n: n represents a natural number), a compensation parameter needed for compensation for a possible error in detection of a received signal strength indicator, occurring in the terminal stations (2-i: i=1 to n) due to a difference in transmission signal waveform to the terminal stations (2-i), and in the terminal stations (2-i), a received signal strength indicator compensating section (23-5) compensates for the received signal strength indicator detection error in a received signal strength indicator detecting section (22-10) on the basis of the compensation parameter broadcasted therefrom. This considerably improves the accuracy of the received signal strength indicator detection in the terminal stations (2-i).

  • Patent number: 7072618
Abstract: A system and method for providing adaptive threshold selection for detecting a signal in the presence of interference or noise. The system and method thus enables a node, such as a mobile user terminal, in an ad-hoc communications network to reduce the number of false alarms it experiences in the detection of communications signals due to, for example, sudden noise bursts or reception of a high powered signal that overloads the automatic gain control (AGC) device of the receiver in the node. The system and method employ two correlation circuits which correlate the received signal with two reference sequences and output a correlated signal, a threshold generating circuit which generates a threshold value based on the estimation of the variance of the output of the first correlation circuit, and a comparison circuit which compares the correlated signal to the threshold value to determine whether the received signal includes a valid data signal, as opposed to only noise.

  • Patent number: 7069025
Abstract: The location of unmodified wireless assets in a wireless communication network may be identified using time differences of arrivals of a communication sequence at different network receivers. Time-stamping devices may include correlator circuits in parallel with signal decoders to time-stamp communication sequences. Cellular wireless networks may be frequency-multiplexed to increase spatial time-stamping density. Tags may be attached to passive assets to provide location identification information to network devices. Locations of assets broadcasting standard 802.11 radio frequency structures may be identified. Noise inherent in correlating a communication sequence may be reduced by using a selected correlation function.

  • Patent number: 7065378
Abstract: Systems and methods for controlling subscriber unit power level using power measurements made on access request transmissions. Since a subscriber unit access request typically precedes a subscriber unit data transmission by a relatively short period of time, the data transmission power level will then be based on a recent power measurement. The access request may also trigger a sequence of power control steps including the transmission of special upstream power measurement transmissions which can be used as the basis for even more accurate power control. These power control features are particularly useful in fading environments such as found in a wireless system.

  • Patent number: 7046978
Abstract: A wireless communication system includes a base station having a plurality of transmit antennas transmits pilot signals to a subscriber station. The subscriber station performs channel measurements on the signals received from the base station through at least two transmit paths and sends path characteristic information for each path to the base station. The base station uses the path characteristic information to determine how best to transmit data from the multiple transmit antennas to a single receive antenna at the subscriber station. Through the use of pre-correction techniques, data signals are transmitted through the multiple transmit antennas such that signals received through the multiple transmit paths can be demodulated and decoded as a single signal.
