  • Patent number: 8364075
Abstract: In a relay scheme, a wireless source apparatus, a wireless destination apparatus and a wireless relay apparatus cooperate for handling transmission failures by space/time diverse channels. In the case of the successful direct transmission, reduced or no additional overhead for the relay selection is incurred. Thus, for a good SNR between source and destination, the inventive protocol has similar performance as a standard approach. In the case of a transmission failure e.g., due to small scale fading, a transmission via different communication paths implementing spatial diversity via a selected relay is supported. The device is to only activate the overhearing of signals in case of weak signal quality between sender and receiver. This selection of relay devices is done of demand only. A specific protocol for the reservation of the wireless medium for the entire cooperative communication has been specified.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus are described for enabling downlink transparent relay in a wireless communication network. In a wireless communications network, a base station and a mobile station may communicate with each other via a relay station, as needed. Transparent relay may allow for relay communication between a base station and a mobile station although the mobile station is unaware of the relay station. However, non-contiguous transmission of a relay station may lead to channel quality measurement and channel estimation degradation during downlink transparent relay. According to some aspects, a base station may schedule a mobile station to a transmission mode that utilizes dedicated pilot signals for downlink transparent relay, and a relay station may transmit data and dedicated pilot signals over the same channel resources as the base station. According to some aspects, the relay station may null common pilot signals transmitted by the base station.

Abstract: A repeater system combines co-located antennas, an intentional imbalance in signal amplification between downlink and uplink, stability management and an amplification indicator to create a user-installed solution to co-channel interference within cellular systems, in strong signal environments such as elevated locations or high-rise building. The invention may be particularly relevant to cellular systems, such as CDMA, that allow limited imbalance between uplink and downlink path losses, thus enabling the design of an inexpensive repeater with a weaker or non-existent uplink, and which creates moderate signal amplification for selected line-of-sight signals, defeating co-channel interference over a small area. The difference in signal amplification on the downlink and uplink is maintained at a level below the capacity of the system to support imbalance, guaranteeing reliable cellular calls.

  • Patent number: 8320826
Abstract: A wireless network includes a base station and a relay station for extending wireless coverage of the base station. Downlink data is sent by the base station and relayed through the relay station to a mobile station, where the downlink data is associated with a preamble that is sent directly from the base station to the mobile station. A transmit power of the relay station is adjusted for transmitting the downlink data from the relay station to the mobile station to reduce a difference between a first power level of the preamble received at the mobile station and a second power level of the downlink data received at the mobile station. The uplink transmit power of the mobile station for the data sent to the relay station is adjusted to compensate for the difference in path loss from mobile station to base station and mobile station to relay station and to compensate for the difference in noise_plus_interference level at relay station compared to that of the base station.

  • Patent number: 8320827
Abstract: Techniques for performing a handover in a network with a relay node (RN) are disclosed. The RN is a node deployed between an eNodeB (eNB) and a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU). The RN receives data from one of the eNB and the WTRU and forwards it to the other. The RN receives a packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) protocol data unit (PDU) from a serving donor evolved Node-B (DeNB) and transmits it to the WTRU. The RN makes a handover decision based on the measurement report received from the WTRU. After making a handover decision, the RN sends a handover request or a control message to the serving DeNB including a first unsuccessfully transmitted PDCP sequence number (SN). The serving DeNB then discards a PDCP PDU with an SN older than the first unsuccessfully transmitted PDCP SN.

Abstract: Various example embodiments are disclosed herein. According to one example embodiment, a method may include obtaining a first channel quality measurement for a wireless node such as a mobile station or relay station in a wireless network. The method may further include sending, from the wireless node, a full channel quality indicator (CQI) to a base station based on the first channel quality measurement. The method may further include obtaining a second channel quality measurement for the wireless node. The method may further include sending a differential CQI to the base station based on comparing the second channel quality measurement to the first channel quality measurement. The differential CQI may occupy less channel resources than the full CQI.

  • Patent number: 8320828
Abstract: In a multiuser MIMO system, entire system throughput achieved during retransmission is significantly enhanced. When an interference signal addressed to another user equipment (UE2) 200b has been demodulated successfully, a user equipment (UE1) 200a holds the demodulated data pertaining to the interference signal, and feeds back ACK information about the UE2 and CQI information achieved after elimination of the interference signal to a radio base station (BS) 100. When the UE2 performs retransmission after ended in a receiving failure and when the UE1 has demodulated the interference signal addressed to the UE2 successfully, the BS changes the distribution of communication resources in such a way that communication resources for the UE2 become larger than those for the UE1.

Abstract: Improved amplify-and-forward relaying in a communication network is described, including an example network of multiple single-antenna mobile stations, a multi-antenna relay station, and a multi-antenna base station. Bi-directional communication with improved transmission efficiency is enabled by suitable transmit/receive processing at the relay station without drawbacks of current relaying techniques. Linear transmit and receive processing matrices are disclosed, and it is shown that the numbers of antennas at the relay station and the base station can be substantially the same without reducing network capacity, closely matching the performance for low and high signal to noise ratios of current techniques that require the relay station to have twice as many antennas as the base station.

According to embodiments, a method for utilizing a repeating function to improve quality of service is provided. According to the method a first mobile cellular device is selected. An instruction is transmitted to the first mobile cellular device instructing the first mobile cellular device. The instruction causes the first mobile cellular device to relay communications between the second mobile cellular device and the cellular service provider. The first mobile cellular device thereby provides the repeating function for the second mobile cellular device.

  • Patent number: 8311491
Abstract: A system to provide narrowcast communications uses adaptive data rate control to individual subscribers such that the effects of precipitation or other link conditions, which are not common to all subscribers, is mitigated. The invention takes advantage of the fact that the narrowcast data consist of packets which are individually addressed to specific subscribers, or groups of subscribers. The narrowcast data is communicated on a plurality of channels, each of potentially differing data rates. The subscribers are assigned a particular channel, based upon their link quality, to receive packets addressed to them. The lower data rate channel will be less affected by adverse link conditions and are hence assigned to subscribers most likely to incur adverse link conditions.
