  • Patent number: 6555237
Abstract: Disclosed is a release agent donor roller, and methods and fusing systems which incorporate the donor roller, for applying a polymeric release agent to a fuser roller in an electrophotographic apparatus. The donor roller comprises a base member with a polymeric outer layer thereover comprising a silicone material with a controlled, relatively high swelling characteristic in the release agent, i.e., the layer has a swell in 300 cts poly(dimethylsiloxane) oil maintained at a temperature of 175° C. after 24 hours exposure of greater than 15% by weight. When operated in a fusing system, the donor roller exhibits relatively low toner contamination levels, even for relatively low melting polymer binder resins used in producing toners, such as polyester resins. The swell characteristic is still at an acceptable level such that the donor roller has adequate mechanical stability.

  • Publication number: 20030078147
Abstract: The invention relates to a roller for fluid film preparation, having an inside core (3), a first layer A, which surrounds the core and has a first hardness, and a second layer B, which surrounds first layer A and has a second hardness different from that of the first layer, where the two surround the core with a layer thickness d. • Patent number: 6544156
Abstract: A method and apparatus for obtaining a desired nip pressure distribution profile in the cross direction of a paper web. The paper web passes through a nip, the latter defined by at least one elastomer covered roll, the covered roll having polarizable particles or magnetic particles embedded therein. A plurality of spaced plates or spaced coils each generate a local field (respectively electric or magnetic) which acts upon individual spaced zones or regions along the covered roll. The field may thus be an electric field or a magnetic filed. The effect of the field is to change the effective modulus of the elastomer by acting on the particles. In turn, this action varies the nip pressure pulse as to exert a desired pressure at each of a plurality of spaced zones or regions on the paper web, to thus create or process a more uniform product in the nip. The method and apparatus can be used, for example, to improve web moisture profiles in the press section of paper machines.

  • Publication number: 20030060348
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a charge roller utilizes a foam rubber substance where epichlorohydrin oxide rubber and an acrylonitrile butadiene rubber are mixed at a ratio of 5:95, or utilizing a crosslinking rubber substance consisting of epichlorohydrin oxide rubber and acrylonitrile butadiene rubber having a polar low molecular polymeric characteristic, thus allowing the charge roller to maintain a low volume resistivity of 107 &OHgr;cm to 108 &OHgr;cm. As a result, the surface of a photosensitive drum can be charged by a minimum charging voltage, to thereby significantly reduce an amount of ozone. A method of manufacturing a charge roller employs peroxide as a cross linking agent for rapidly cross-linking molecular chains between an epichlorohydrin oxide rubber and acrylonitrile butadiene rubber forming a main composition of a foam rubber substance.

Abstract: An intermediate medium for use as a temporary image support in an imaging device, comprising a rubber top layer which contains a rubber and a conductive material and is formed by polymerization of a rubber oil in the presence of the conductive material. As conductive material, the top layer contains an intrinsically conductive polymer so modified that it can be combined with the rubber oil used as the starting material. This results in high miscibility of the polymer in the rubber oil so that the conductivity of the rubber is high. The conductivity of the top layer can thus be adjusted to the correct level while curing of the rubber oil with UV radiation.

The method includes steps of press-fitting flanges into a roller body, shaped in a hollow cylinder, from each of both end openings of the roller body with putting an elastic material between each of the flanges and the roller body; installing the roller body in a shaping mold so that the roller body is supported by the flanges and the elastic material at a predetermined position in the shaping mold; injecting a melted rubber into a space between the roller body and the shaping mold from an injection opening; and curing the melted rubber injected into the space. The roller body holding device for holding a roller body is shaped in a hollow cylinder and includes a flange, which is press-fitted into the roller body from each of end openings of the roller body; and an elastic material disposed between the flange and the roller body.

Abstract: A pressure roller for a fixing device is manufactured by extruding silicone rubber on a shaft, foaming the extruded silicone rubber, subjecting the foamed silicone rubber to primary and secondary heat treatments, polishing the heat-treated silicone rubber, and then disposing the polished silicone rubber in a resin tube. In accordance with one embodiment, the pressure roller includes a shaft, a first silicone rubber layer formed on the shaft so as to surround the shaft, a resin tube formed on the first silicone rubber layer so as to surround the shaft, the resin tube having extensions at opposite ends thereof, each extension extending beyond the opposite ends of the first silicone rubber layer, and second silicone rubber layers formed at respective opposite ends of the first silicone rubber layer between the extensions of the resin tube and the shaft. The second silicone rubber layers serve to couple the first silicone rubber layer to the resin tube.

  • Patent number: 6432031
Abstract: The problems caused by chemical and thermal shrinkage of hard roll covers, are reduced by the inclusion of one or more intermediate compressive layers between a roll core base and cover. The compressive layer has the properties of being rigid enough to allow the cover to be applied to the roll, and compressible enough to deform and absorb the stresses which occur as the cover is shrinking during processing. In one embodiment, the compressive layer is separately cast with the cover over a disposable inner mold so as to form a composite roll cover. The composite roll cover is fitted over a roll core base and the resulting circumferential cavity is then filled with a thermoset resin.

Abstract: In a roller enveloping a base body for winding up a material web, particularly a paper web, the circumferential surface contacted by the winding material is more radially resilient near the two roller ends than in the mid-roller area, compensating, at least partially, for a deflection of the base body at the maximum winding diameter. This increased radial resilience near the two roller ends is due to an appropriate resilient layer applied on at least sections of the base body and/or at least one appropriate resilient element placed on the base body.

Abstract: PTFE and other ultra high melt viscosity (UHMV) polymeric materials, such as TFM, and UHMW polyethylene are used, rather than FEP or PFA, in the HST process as it has been found that UHMV polymers may be readily substituted for FEP in the HST process with little significant change in the existing process steps. Appropriate expansion of a PTFE tube, after fabricating to the proper dimensions, may be obtained with pressure and heat treatment at a temperature of the order of 200° F., rather than 600-700° F. and the resulting tube is sufficiently stable to be shipped for later shrink application at comparable temperatures onto a roll at a mill. The resulting roll cover has improved mechanical properties at high temperatures and man be reinforced with a conductive additive for providing anti-static qualities or other additives to improve its wear and compressive strength.
