Patent number: 6544156Abstract: A method and apparatus for obtaining a desired nip pressure distribution profile in the cross direction of a paper web. The paper web passes through a nip, the latter defined by at least one elastomer covered roll, the covered roll having polarizable particles or magnetic particles embedded therein. A plurality of spaced plates or spaced coils each generate a local field (respectively electric or magnetic) which acts upon individual spaced zones or regions along the covered roll. The field may thus be an electric field or a magnetic filed. The effect of the field is to change the effective modulus of the elastomer by acting on the particles. In turn, this action varies the nip pressure pulse as to exert a desired pressure at each of a plurality of spaced zones or regions on the paper web, to thus create or process a more uniform product in the nip. The method and apparatus can be used, for example, to improve web moisture profiles in the press section of paper machines.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 2001Date of Patent: April 8, 2003Assignee: International Paper CompanyInventor: D. Patent number: 6428455Abstract: A roll for smoothing a web and a method of making the roll. The roll includes a roll core having an outer surface, and a covering layer disposed on the outer surface of the roll core, the covering layer having an inner surface, an outer surface, and a radial thickness. The covering layer includes a resilient matrix material and fillers embedded in the resilient matrix material, wherein the fillers include a plurality of elongated particles which have a length which is less than the radial thickness of the covering layer. The process includes providing a roll core having an outer surface, and applying a covering layer on the outer surface of the roll core, the covering layer having an inner surface, an outer surface, and radial thickness, the covering layer including a resilient matrix material and fillers embedded in the resilient matrix material, wherein the fillers include a plurality of elongated particles which have a length which is less than the radial thickness of the covering layer.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 2000Date of Patent: August 6, 2002Assignee: Voith Sulzer Papiertechnik Patent GmbHInventor: Carsten Sohl

Publication number: 20020103063Abstract: In a roller enveloping a base body for winding up a material web, particularly a paper web, the circumferential surface contacted by the winding material is more radially resilient near the two roller ends than in the mid-roller area, compensating, at least partially, for a deflection of the base body at the maximum winding diameter. This increased radial resilience near the two roller ends is due to an appropriate resilient layer applied on at least sections of the base body and/or at least one appropriate resilient element placed on the base body.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 31, 2002Publication date: August 1, 2002Inventor: Stefan Lehner-Dittenberger

Publication number: 20020098961Abstract: PTFE and other ultra high melt viscosity (UHMV) polymeric materials, such as TFM, and UHMW polyethylene are used, rather than FEP or PFA, in the HST process as it has been found that UHMV polymers may be readily substituted for FEP in the HST process with little significant change in the existing process steps. Appropriate expansion of a PTFE tube, after fabricating to the proper dimensions, may be obtained with pressure and heat treatment at a temperature of the order of 200° F., rather than 600-700° F. and the resulting tube is sufficiently stable to be shipped for later shrink application at comparable temperatures onto a roll at a mill. The resulting roll cover has improved mechanical properties at high temperatures and man be reinforced with a conductive additive for providing anti-static qualities or other additives to improve its wear and compressive strength.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 3, 1998Publication date: July 25, 2002Inventors: FRANK M.
