Abstract: Air- or gas-holding fabrics and improvements to welded seam tapes used to join multiple fabric panels and/or to join accessories to one or more fabric panels. Specifically disclosed is a joining system and method for securing air- or gas-holding panels to one another and/or to joining accessories to one or more panels without causing damage due to overheating the seam area. This disclosure has been found particularly useful with improved lightweight fabrics that would otherwise be more susceptible to damage during welding processes. The disclosed seam tapes and accessory fabrics find particular use in connection with inflatable devices, but may be used in other applications. This disclosure relates to a dedicated seam tape or dedicated accessory fabric that (a) utilizes specialized coatings with a lower melt temperature compared to coatings that are used on inflatable fabric material and/or (b) is manufactured from material that has not been treated to have substantial reflective properties.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for making a plastic bag or pouch wherein a plastic web is moved in a longitudinal direction and a tape made from an elongated plastic film is fed to the web. The tape is made of a pair of elongated attachment lanes of complementary fastening elements sealed to the film to function as attachable-detachable closures. The lanes extend parallel and are spaced apart. A perforation line is formed in the film between lanes, and a flange is defined on one side of only one of said lanes. The lanes are separated and pairs of lengths are cut off said lanes. The pairs of cut off lengths are sealed on a diagonal to the moving web in different directions to form V-shaped closures with the lane having the flange on one side thereof sealed to the web by the flange only. Bags are formed from the moving web. An intermediate product is described consisting of a narrow substrate having V-shaped closures spaced longitudinally for placement on a moving web in a bag making machine.

Abstract: Implementations described herein include films with maintained or decreased light transmittance despite a reduction in gauge. In particular, one or more implementations include a multi-layer film with each layer having differing opacity agents. The combination of the two different opacity agents in two different layers can have a synergistic effect that provide decreased light transmittance. Indeed, in one or more embodiments a multi-layer film with differing opacity agents in each layer has a decreased light transmittance despite a reduction in gauge and opacity agents.
Abstract: A station (S) of application of segments of opening/closing strip on plastic web films suitable to form bags, comprising punching means (U14, U22) of predefined areas of the plastic film for the access to areas of the segments through the film, and welding means (U15, U23) of the strip segments at intervals on the plastic film, wherein the punching means (U14, U22) and the welding means (U15, U23) are positioned along the flow path of the film to act in sequence on the same area in order to, respectively, punch the film and weld the segments in the predetermined points of the plastic film.
Abstract: Methods for creating multi-layered incrementally-stretched and incrementally-laminated bags with increased or maintained strength are described herein. An increased level of strength is achieved by bonding adjacent layers of a multi-layer film together in a manner that the bond strength of the laminated layers is less than a strength of a weakest tear resistance of the individual first and second film layers. The inventors have surprisingly found that such a configuration of light bonding provides increased and unexpected strength properties to the multi-layer film as compared to a monolayer film of equal thickness or a multi-layer film in which the plurality of layers are tightly bonded together.

Abstract: Plastic sheet can be heat-sealed to form a water-tight envelope having an open top. A water-tight frangible container can be loaded into the envelope through the open top. The water-tight frangible container can contain a predetermined amount of water. A predetermined amount of urea can be loaded into the envelope through the open top. Abstract: A thin sealing device which is resistant to damage caused by foreign material is disclosed. The thin sealing device has an internal heating element. The thin sealing device has a blunt edge, which has a radius smaller than that of the heating element. A thermocouple is placed in a cavity near this blunt edge to monitor the temperature at the point of sealing. In some embodiments, the thin sealing device is pivotably attached at its leading (upstream) edge. The trailing (downstream) edge of the thin sealing device is moved by means of a compressible force, such as an air cylinder. In this way, the air in the cylinder pushes the thin sealing device downward into the plane of the film. However, a foreign object located on the film can overcome the force of the air cylinder, thereby lifting the thin sealing device out of the path of the film.

Abstract: A packaging and method for controlling the seal strength between two cooperating thermo-sealable films at predetermined sealing portions, where a predetermined amount of heat is applied over a predetermined period of time. The resulting packaging is resealable after the first separation of two surfaces. The strength of the seal controlled by defining the number and dimensions of a plurality of restricted areas without a material cover that is resistant to the thermo-seal effect. The restricted area can be defined with a plurality of dots of predetermined selected shapes and dimensions. The resulting article facilitates the rupture of the packaging along a predetermined path. With this process, a fixed predetermined heat and residency time can be chosen and the seal strength can still be varied in different areas of a packaging. Non-sealable microdots with a predetermined amount of adhesive deposits also covered by a polypropylene powder deposit permit its resealing.
