  • Patent number: 6631529
Abstract: A cover assembly designed and structured to protectively enclose a mattress of the type used in medical facilities such as on hospital beds, stretchers, gurneys, etc. A casing is formed from a flexible, high strength, water impermeable material which is resistant to rupture or abrasion and which has characteristics which facilitates its use in the environment of a hospital or other medical facility. The casing includes a reinforcement assembly in the form of one or more flexible material panels, which may be formed from a material similar or identical to that from which the casing is formed and which are attached to different elongated outer walls of the casing so as to extend over a mid-portion thereof and be aligned substantially with a mid-portion of a body supported on the mattress, thereby providing supplementary support to the body so as to resist the mid-portion of the body sinking excessively into the mattress.

  • Patent number: 6463606
Abstract: A hydroentangled nonwoven fabric exhibiting cross-direction extensibility and recovery comprises a nonwoven web of staple length fibers of about 0.8 to 3.0 denier having a basis weight of about 1.0 to 4.0 ounces per square yard. A polymeric binder composition substantially uniformly applied to the nonwoven web imparts desired elasticity to the web, with the fabric exhibiting at least about 50% extensibility in a cross-direction thereof, and at least about 90% recovery in a cross-direction. The nonwoven web may comprise synthetic fibers, natural fibers, and blends thereof, as well as continuous filaments. Patterned hydroentanglement of the web acts to entangle the fibers to provide the fabric with desired performance characteristics. A method of making the nonwoven fabric is disclosed. The nonwoven fabric is particularly suited for use in a mattress pad assembly, as also disclosed herein.

  • Publication number: 20020088054
Abstract: A mattress covering in the form of a fitted mattress pad or fitted sheet has an inelastic, generally rectangular top portion and a side skirt extending transversely, preferably perpendicularly from the outer periphery of the top portion in a closed loop entirely around the outer periphery of the top portion. The side skirt can be made of a single panel of a single layer of a textile material, or it can be made of multiple panels or lengths of other materials each of a single layer. A first elastic cord is attached to the inelastic material of the side skirt at its outer periphery remote from the top portion. A second, separate flat elastic strap is attached to the inelastic material of the side skirt at some place between and spaced apart from the top panel portion and the first elastic cord, preferably closer to the top portion outer periphery than to the first elastic cord. The top portion is dimensioned to fit a standard size mattress and the side skirt is dimensioned to fit a range of mattress heights.

  • Patent number: 6134730
Abstract: Integrated bed covers for the mattress of a bed include an upper bed covering of one or more layer, for convenience referred to generically as a `cover`, e.g., a comforter or blanket, together with a mattress pocket adapted to fit around and enclose a lower portion of the mattress wherein the cover is expandably connected to the mattress pocket, that is to say, so that the bed cover (e.g., comforter or blanket) can be easily separated or expanded upwardly from the pocket and yet remained connected to it. I have found it possible to accomplish this objective by connecting to the pocket a base sheet or supporting sheet that extends laterally as well as beyond the end of the bed from the pocket and then securing the edges of this supporting sheet to the edges of the covering.

  • Patent number: 5987668
Abstract: A washable fabric covered mattress pad involves the combination of a layer of resilient foam with a layer of fabric, both of which layers are machine washable and dryable. The fabric, either manmade or natural fiber material, is flame laminated to one side of the layer of foam. The non-covered side of the foam layer frictionally engages a mattress for non-slip self-positioning of the mattress pad without requiring straps or other specific holding mechanisms. A second or additional layers of foam of varying physical characteristics and/or thicknesses may be added through heat bonding thereof in a predetermined pattern to the non-covered side of the first layer of foam. Such arrangement results in a fabric covered, completely washable self-positioning mattress pad, such as having a preferred thickness generally in a range of from about one to about four inches.

  • Patent number: 5117519
Abstract: A therapeutic mattress cover includes overlying first and second fabric sheets of rectangular shape. Laterally spaced rows of first stitching interconnect the sheets throughout their width. A hollow rectangular skirt at its top edge overlies the perimeter of the sheets and depends therefrom. A second peripheral stitching connects the top edge of the sheet with the corresponding two ends and one side of the sheets defining with the first stitching a plurality of transverse tubes with the second stitches closing one end of the tubes. A filler pad of a foam plastic resilient material is nested within each tube, and third stitching connects the remaining side of the skirt to the remaining side of the sheets closing the other end of the tube. The method of making a therapeutic mattress cover comprises stacking first, second and third fabric sheets and applying a plurality of laterally spaced rows of first stitching interconnecting the sheets throughout their width.
