Abstract: The sensitivity to stresses and the melt strength of thermoplastic polymer mixtures which comprise a polyphenylene ether and a polyvinyl aromatic compound can be improved by the addition of a polyfunctional dienophilic compound, for example, a bismaleimide or of a polyfunctional conjugated diene compound, for example, divinyl benzene.
Abstract: Carbonate polymer compositions are rendered gamma ray resistant by the incorporation of 5 to 20,000 ppm of one or more sorbate compounds. The compositions of the invention have a reduced yellowing after exposure to cobalt 60 radiation. Examples of useful sorbate compounds are sorbic acid, sorbic acid amides, esters and the like. The addition of hindered phenolic compounds renders the sorbate compounds more effective.
Abstract: A pneumatic tire having a low fuel consumption and all-weather running performances is disclosed, which comprises a tread composed of a rubber composition containing 30-80 parts by weight of carbon black having IA of not less than 70 mg/g and DBP absorption of not less than 90 ml/100 g, based on 100 parts by weight of a rubber blend consisting of 97-10 parts by weight of at least one diene rubber having a content of bound styrene of 0-30% and a content of vinyl bond in butadiene unit of 25-95%, 3-30 parts by weight of butyl rubber and/or halogenated butyl rubber, and 0-87 parts by weight of the other diene rubber.
Abstract: An adduct of a heteroatomic monomer, e.g., gamma-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane and a monoahl, e.g., a monohydroxyl polyalkylene oxide or a polyahl, e.g., a polypropylene glycol, is usefully employed in the preparation of stable copolymer dispersions of the type used in the production of polyurethane foams and polyurethane elastomers.The copolymer dispersion is prepared by addition copolymerization of (1) the adduct with (2) ethylenically unsaturated monomer(s), e.g., styrene or mixture thereof with acrylonitrile, while (1) and (2) are dispersed or dissolved in an excess of a polyahl, i.e., an active hydrogen polyfunctional compound.

Abstract: This invention relates to thermoplastic coating compositions which utilize organic solvent solutions of acrylic copolymer as film-forming media.Enhanced distortion resistance is obtained by utilizing acrylic polymer which comprises two types of polar group, the two types interacting strongly. A further embodiment utilizes in addition a plasticizer which comprises a chain of units of the formula --CO--(CH.sub.2).sub.5 --O--.The compositions are useful as lacquers for the automotive and refinish industries.
Abstract: Compositions comprising an organotin mercaptide, organotin sulfide or mixtures thereof; a diester of an ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid having one carboxyl group on each carbon atom of the ethenylene group; and, optionally, an organotin carboxylate are useful for stabilizing halogen-containing organic polymers against the deteriorative effects of heat, light and weathering.
Abstract: A tire sealant composition for injection into pneumatic tires is provided. The tire sealant composition promotes heat transfer in a rolling tire, thereby keeping the tire somewhat cooler; it assists in balancing the wheel and tire, thereby prolonging the life of the tire and precluding unnecessary unevenness of wear of the tire; and the tire sealant composition serves to seal the tire around the wheel rim and particularly in the tread area of the tire against punctures. The composition includes a thickener and binding agent, asbestos fibers, ethylene glycol, hydrocarbon process oil, a detergent as a wetting agent and emulsifier, sodium bicarbonate, and water.
Abstract: The invention relates to a structurally viscous thickener which contains a copolymer of acrylic acid and acrylamide, a polyacrylic acid and optionally a solvent, emulsifiers, a neutralizing agent and a deaerator as additional components. The thickener may be in the form of a water-in-oil emulsion and is particularly suitable for use in printing pastes for dyeing and printing fibre material, especially textile fabrics.
Abstract: Poly(vinyl chloride) resin compositions containing an ethylenically-unsaturated compound having carbonylamino or thiocarbonylamino groups. These compositions are readily convertible at low temperatures to crosslinked polymers and are radiation-curable to dimensionally stable articles and films that are clear and that do not exude oily materials.

Abstract: Enhanced lubricating properties and good heat stability upon processing are imparted to thermoplastic materials such as polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resins by the incorporation therein of a polyglycerol ester of a C.sub.8 to C.sub.22 fatty acid. The ester is characterized by a degree of polymerization ranging from 2 to 8 and a degree of acid substitution ranging from 1 to 10.
Abstract: Modified vinyl acetate aqueous adhesive compositions containing acidic metal salt curing agents, which are suitable for exterior applications where water resistance is required, contain selected solvents as low temperature fusion aids. The adhesives are characterized by their film forming properties at temperatures as low as -1.degree. C., increased closed assembly times of at least up to 40 minutes, improved storage stability, and their satisfactory cold and hot water resistance. They consist essentially of a mixture of (a) an aqueous emulsion of a stabilized vinyl acetate/N-methylol acrylamide polymer; (b) a metal salt curing agent; (c) optionally a cross-linking inhibitor; and (d) 1-7%, based on the polymer solids, of ethylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate, ethylene glycol diacetate, or tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol as the fusion aid.

Abstract: A thermosetting composition for use in the formation of a magnetizable film on a substrate is disclosed herein, which has improved resistance to frictional wear and abrasion, and improved impact durability. The composition comprises a heat-curable polymer resin, magnetizable particles, a fatty ester, and sufficient solvent to provide a viscosity of from about 200 to about 600 centipoise at about 24.degree. C. The method of preparation of the composition as well as its use are also disclosed.
Abstract: A process for the preparation of reinforced vulcanizates which process comprises vulcanizing a mixture comprising rubber, a novolak and at least one reactive melamine resin obtained by reaction of one mol of melamine with 0.5 to 6 mols of aldehyde, said melamine resin being present in an amount of from 0.5 to 120% by weight, based on the weight of the novolak resin, and the phenolic component of said novolak resin being selected from the group consisting of phenol, polynuclear polyphenols, alkylphenols, a combination of alkylphenols with phenol, and a combination of at least one of said phenols with a further phenol selected from the group consisting of resorcinol, phenylphenol and polyalkylphenols. The invention also includes rubber articles prepared from a product of such a process.
Abstract: Two stage film-forming polymers having a soft first and a hard second stage are prepared by emulsion polymerizing the first stage and then, in the presence of a coalescent, the second stage. The polymers combine low MFT with superior early block resistance and high temperature hardness.

Abstract: A thermoplastic resin composition prepared by adding, to a vinyl chloride resin composition or its homologous series resin composition, a glycerin ester represented by the following formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 represent each an acyl group or a hydrogen atom, said acyl group comprises one having 2 carbon atoms and one consisting mainly of those having 10 to 14 carbon atoms, the acyl group having 2 carbon atoms is present in an amount, on the average, of up to 2 mol per mol of glycerin, the acyl group consisting mainly of those having 10 to 14 carbon atoms are present in an amount, on the average, of at least 0.9 mol per mol of glycerin and the total amount of the acyl groups is, on the average, 2.7 to 3.0 mol per mole of glycerin.
Abstract: In production of solid films (e.g. a floor covering wear layer) from vinyl chloride polymer plastisols, good physical properties of the plastisols and films are provided by use of a plasticizer containing 50-90% prime ester at least about 40 parts per hundred parts by weight of which is aromatic diester selected from alkyl benzyl succinates, glutarates and mixtures thereof, up to 20% hydrocarbon boiling at 200.degree.-325.degree. C. and 10-50% non-aromatic diester having a molecular weight of 230-300. Using such a plasticizer, the plastisols and films can be conveniently plasticized with relatively small amounts of prime ester, and the films containing such small amounts of prime ester have unusually high stain resistance.

Abstract: Pressure sensitive adhesive compositions are provided that are especially suitable for forming contact bonds that are resealable to polyethylene surfaces at room temperature. Such adhesive compositions include a blend of a linear or a radial block copolymer, an end-block modifying resin compatible with the end or thermoplastic block of the copolymer and incompatible with the mid of elastomeric block, a plasticizing process oil compatible with the mid or elastomeric block, and, only if desired, not more than about 14 weight percent of a mid block or elastomeric block associating or modifying resin compatible with the mid or elastomeric block and incompatible with the end or thermoplastic block. A particularly advantageous utilization of these compositions is as a releasable and resealable sealing strip for thin-walled storage or sandwich bag products made of a polyolefin film.
Abstract: Plasticizers are prepared from a monomer mixture consisting essentially of (A) one or more olefins having 6 to 18 carbon atoms and (B) one or more C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 esters or diesters of monoethylenically unsaturated mono- or di-carboxylic acids. Blends of the plasticizers with different polymers, for example polyvinyl chloride, are also prepared.
Abstract: A composition suitable for molding applications containing from about 30 to about 50 weight percent poly(arylene sulfide), about 10 to about 30 weight percent glass fibers, about 30 to about 60 weight percent of a component chosen from glass beads, fused silica and mixtures thereof, from about 0 to about 3 weight percent colorant, and from about 0.5 to about 2 weight percent of a processing aid chosen from among N,N'-alkylenebis(alkanamides), glycerides and phosphated glycerides of saturated fatty acids containing from 10 to 30 carbon atoms, mono- and dialkanolamides derived from saturated fatty acids and esters derived from a saturated long-chained fatty acid and long-chained saturated aliphatic alcohol.

Abstract: A stabilizer or dispersing agent for use in a suspension polymerization of a vinyl compound is provided which comprises a modified and partially hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol having an average polymerization degree of from 200 to 3,000 and an average hydrolysis degree of from 60 to 90 mol % and including anion hydrophilic groups at the side chains thereof, wherein said anion hydrophilic groups are selected from the group consisting of dicarboxyl groups and/or esters thereof and/or salts thereof, sulfuric esters and/or salts thereof and phosphoric esters and/or salts thereof, and the content of said anion hydrophilic groups is in the range of from 0.02 to 10 mol % per unit mol of the polyvinyl alcohol. A process for preparing a polymer of a vinyl compound is also provided wherein said vinyl compound is polymerized in a suspension thereof suspended by the use of the stabilizer or dispersing agent.
Abstract: Filled thermoplastic compositions useful as sound deadening sheeting having improved tensile elongation are obtained by blending about 5-60 percent by weight of a mixture of at least two copolymers of ethylene, having specified polar comonomer contents, about 40-90 percent by weight of filler, 0-15 percent by weight of plasticizer selected from the group consisting of processing oils, polyesters, polyethers and polyether esters, and optionally modifying resins such as elastomeric polymers and certain other ethylene and propylene homo- and copolymers.
Abstract: The invention relates to a composition for the protection of materials against contaminations, spots and stains.This liquid composition comprises by weight 0.1 to 1% of at least one fluorinated resin based on acrylic or methacrylic esters of fluorinated sulfonamido-alcohol, associated or not with non-fluorinated monomers, 0.4 to 10% of at least one adjuvant selected from aminoplast resins based on melamine, thermoplastic resins and waxes, and 89 to 99.5% of at least one organic solvent.Applied on materials such as walls, facades, monuments or sculptures in cement, bricks, concrete or stones and other construction elements, the composition according to the invention confers on the materials an excellent protection against natural or artificial contaminations.
Abstract: Polymers of esters of methacrylic acid having an average chain length of about 6 to about 50 mers are prepared by an anionic polymerization reaction, carried out in the presence of a chain-regulating alcohol and a catalytic amount of an alkoxide anion, in which control of the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of the polymer are achieved by regulating the ratio of the total quantity of alcohol employed to the total monomer charge. These polymers, their hydrolysis products, and their derivatives have a wide variety of applications, including use as components in films, coatings, fibers, impregnants, adhesives, printing inks, and binders, and use as modifiers, plasticizers, melt flow improvers, and leveling agents.
Abstract: This invention relates to making dense, spherical particles of vinyl plastisol resins by means of a suspension polymerization procedure. The dense, spherical particles or beads have a diameter of about 10 to about 100 microns and are made in an aqueous medium containing a free-radical yielding polymerization catalyst and in the presence of polyvinyl alcohol, as a suspending agent, and a surfactant having a hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) less than about 3.5. The suspension vinyl resins so produced are easily and uniformly mixed with a plasticizer to form low viscosity plastisols which are stable, containing particles of uniform and proper size and capable of producing films, and like products, of good clarity.
