The externally modified polymer composition includes a modifier, wherein the modifier is compatible with the polymer and the modifier is nontoxic, nonvolatile and nonfugitive. The various degradable materials include films, fibers, extruded and molded products, laminates, foams, powders, nonwovens, adhesives and coatings. The disclosed materials are particularly useful for the production of a variety of products in high volumes which are suitable for recycling after use or which are discarded into the environment in large volumes.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 1993Date of Patent: August 22, 1995Assignee: Ecopol, LLCInventors: Richard G. Patent number: 5439960Abstract: A woodworking adhesive composition prepared by a two stage emulsion polymerization procedure wherein the first stage comprises the step of emulsion polymerizing vinyl acetate with 0.1 to 6% by weight of a post-crosslinking monomer in the presence of polyvinyl alcohol to produce a polyvinyl alcohol stabilized copolymer having a Tg within the range of +10.degree. to +40.degree. C. and containing no pre-crosslinking monomers and the second stage comprises the step of emulsion polymerizing methyl methacrylate to produce a methyl methacrylate homo- or copolymer containing at least 75% by weight methyl methacrylate and having a Tg within the range of +50.degree. to +120.degree. C., further characterized in that the ratio of the polymer produced in the first stage to the polymer produced in the second stage is within the range of 10:1 to 10:6 and wherein the first stage polymer and second stage monomer mixture are not equilibrated prior to the second stage polymerization.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 1994Date of Patent: August 8, 1995Assignee: National Starch and Chemical Investment Holding CorporationInventors: Paul R. Patent number: 5418280Abstract: A sealant or mastic composition comprises a dispersion of a finely divided particulate solid in a silicone resin formulation which contains a dispersant containing at least one group of the formula--(O--A--CO).sub.n --.The dispersant may be derived from a hydroxycarboxylic acid and preferably has a --COOH end group. The dispersant modifies the shear properties of the sealant.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 1989Date of Patent: May 23, 1995Assignee: Imperial Chemical Industries PLCInventor: Kevin L. Birkett

Patent number: 5409979Abstract: Liquid-crystal polyesters have been found to present special concerns when molded. The composition of the present invention has been found to provide unexpectedly superior processability results for such class of polymers. The improved liquid-crystal polyester resin composition comprises:(a) 100 parts by weight of a liquid-crystal polyester resin, and(b) 0.01 to 5 parts by weight of a fatty acid ester represented by the general formula: ##STR1## wherein at least one of X.sup.1, X.sup.2, X.sup.3 and X.sup.4 is a ##STR2## group and the others are each --H, --OH, or an alkyl or aryl group, and R is an alkyl or alkenyl group having 2 to 30 carbon atoms. It surprisingly has been found through empirical research that good mold release is made possible in the liquid-crystal polyester resin composition of the present invention coupled with a good retention of mechanical properties (i.e., flexural strength and flexural modulus) in the resulting article.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 1993Date of Patent: April 25, 1995Assignee: Polyplastics Co., Ltd.Inventor: Mikio Nakai

Patent number: 5395871Abstract: Poly(hydroxystyrene) resins in which a portion of the hydroxyl groups are functionalized with t-butyloxycarbonyl groups ("t-Boc") tend to decompose during drying of the wet solid and on storage in the solid state. Solutions that are more stable than the solid material can be made from the wet freshly synthesized solid by dissolving the wet solid in a solvent that forms an azeotrope with water and then distilling the azeotrope of water and solvent from the solution until the solution contains less than about 1% by weight of water.Type: GrantFiled: May 6, 1994Date of Patent: March 7, 1995Assignee: Hoechst Celanese CorporationInventor: Dinesh N.
