Abstract: There is provided a process for the production of aldehydes wherein an oric halide is reacted with carbon monoxide at a superatmospheric pressure in the presence of a hydrogen donor and in the presence of a base and of a catalyst in a solvent system.Catalysts of choice are transition metal catalysts. A preferred temperature range is from about 50.degree. to 150.degree. C.

Abstract: Analogs of 2,5-Diaryl tetrahydrofurans which were substituted or unsubstituted at 3,4-positions were prepared.These compounds are found to have potent and specific PAF (Platelet Activating Factor) antagonistic activities and thereby useful in the treatment of various diseases or disorders mediated by the PAF, for example, inflammation, cardiovascular disorder, asthma, lung edema, adult respiratory distress syndrome, pain, and aggregation of platelets.

Abstract: Tetrahydrofuranyl substituted ethers are provided having the structural formula ##STR1## wherein A is (CH.sub.2).sub.2, CH.dbd.CH or a single bond, m is 1 to 5, B is a single bond or CH.dbd.CH, n is 1 to 4, X is O or ##STR2## wherein n' is 0, 1 or 2, R is H, lower alkyl or alkali metal and R.sup.1 is lower alkyl, arylalkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkylalkyl or lower alkenyl and including all stereoisomers thereof.The compounds are cardiovascular agents useful, for example, in the treatment of thrombolytic disease and as antiinflammatory agents and analgesics.
Abstract: The present invention concerns novel heterocyclic aminoalcoyl derivatives having the formula: ##STR1## wherein n=1, 2 or 3; A represents a nitrogen atom or the CH group, X=CH.sub.2 or CH.sub.2 O; R represents a phenyl nucleus possibly substituted; NR.sub.1 R.sub.2 =amino, methylamino, N,N-dialkylamino or an heterocyclic radical; and R.sub.3 =H, halogen, alkyl, alkyloxy or methoxy.These derivatives are useful as drugs, especially as analgesics and antidepressants.

Abstract: The present specification provides novel analogs of carbacyclin (CBA.sub.2), 6a-carba-prostacyclin (6a-carba-PGI.sub.2), which have pronounced prostacyclin-like pharmacological activity, e.g., as platelet antiaggregatory agents. Specifically the novel chemical analogs of CBA.sub.2 are those substituted by fluoro (C-5), alkyl (C-9), interphenylene (C-5), and methano (C-6a,9). Further provided are benzindene analogs of CBA.sub.2 and substituted forms thereof, i.e., 9-deoxy-2',9-methano (or 2',9-metheno)-3-oxa-4,5,6-trinor-3,7-(1',3'-interphenylene)-PGF.sub.1 compounds. Also provided are a variety of novel chemical intermediates, e.g., substituted bicyclo[3.3.0]octane intermediates, and chemical process utilizing such intermediates which are useful in the preparation of the novel CBA.sub.2 analogs.
Abstract: A process for the preparation of an .alpha.-ketocarboxylic acid N-tert.-butylamide of the formulaR--CO--CO--NH--C(CH.sub.3).sub.3in whichR is an aliphatic radical with up to 8 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl radical with 3 to 6 carbon atoms, a phenyl or naphthyl radical or a heterocyclic radical,comprising reacting an acyl cyanide of the formulaR--CO--CNwith tert.-butyl methyl ether of the formula(CH.sub.3).sub.3 C--O--CH.sub.3at a temperature between about 0.degree. and 80.degree. C. in the presence of an acid which is capable of activating the ether of formula (III) under the reaction conditions to give a tert.-butyl carbonium ion, and then hydrolyzing the reaction mixture. Advantageously the acyl cyanide is pivaloyl cyanide or benzoyl cyanide and is reacted with an approximately equimolar amount of the ether in the presence of about 1.1 to 1.5 times the molar amount of concentrated sulphuric acid as the activating acid. The products are useful as intermediates in the synthesis of known herbicides.

For the process an alkylating agent and activated methylene compound are reacted in the presence of a cyclic polyether compound and alkali metal compound. Water can also be present and/or the reaction may be carried out in an inert organic diluent.
