Patent number: 6521782Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of aqueous solutions of unsaturated quaternary ammonium salts. The salts can correspond to the following formula (I): in which R represents a methyl or benzyl radical, by reaction, in the presence of water, of N,N-dimethyl-amninoethyl acrylate (DAMEA) with a quaternizing agent of formula (II): R—Cl (II) in which R is as defined above. Generally, the reaction is carried out in a closed reactor, which includes all the DAMEA and has been pressurized by air or depleted air to 0.5 to 3 bar, by continuously introducing, at a temperature of 35 to 65° C., the quatenlizing agent (II) and the water, until a concentration of salt (I) in the water is obtained. The water starts to be introduced beginning when 0-20% of the amount by weight of the quaternizing agent (II) necessary for the reaction has been added and it being possible for the pressure at the end of the reaction to reach 9 bar.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 2001Date of Patent: February 18, 2003Assignee: AtofinaInventors: Alain Riondel, Gilles Herbst, Marc Esch, Eric Delaunay, Peter Meyer

Patent number: 4910330Abstract: Hydroxy sulfonic acids in general and isethionic acid (2-hydroxy ethyl sulfonic acid) in particular can be prepared at 99+% purity and good yields by the selective oxidation of a precursor hydroxy mercaptan with hydrogen peroxide. The resulting product is pure enough to be used directly in the synthesis of sulfo-acrylic esters which are finding considerable use as stabilizers in producing vinylidene chloride copolymers used for FDA approved packaging films.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 1987Date of Patent: March 20, 1990Assignee: Union Oil Company of CaliforniaInventors: Dennis E. Patent number: 4897499Abstract: The quaternary ammonium monomers of this invention have the formula ##STR1## wherein R is an ethylenically unsaturated organic groupR.sup.1 is a linear C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl group, optionally hydroxy substitutedX is chlorine, bromine or iodineY.crclbar. is a surfactant anion. The epoxides derivable from the halohydrin of Formula (I) are other monomers of this invention. The monomers are soluble in common organic solvents and comonomers. The invention is also directed to addition polymers of these monomers and to methods of producing both the monomers and the polymers. The halohydrin monomers and the polymers are stable at acid pH values, although capable of reacting with materials reactive with the hydroxyl and/or halide groups. Upon heating, they are self-reactive and can become cross-linked. At alkaline pH values they become self-reactive; the polymers crosslink slowly even at room temperature, with a crosslinking rate increasing rapidly with temperature.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 1983Date of Patent: January 30, 1990Assignee: Rohm and Haas CompanyInventors: Thomas W.
