  • Patent number: 4098970
Abstract: Carboxylated styrene allyl alcohol copolymers are prepared by reaction of trimellitic anhydride and a hydroxy copolymer under controlled conditions to minimize polyester formation. The hydroxy copolymer is a copolymer of styrene or a substituted styrene and allyl alcohol or methallyl alcohol containing from 1.8 to 10 weight percent hydroxyl. At least one hydroxy group per molecule and preferably 20-80 percent of the hydroxyls of the hydroxy copolymer are reacted with trimellitic anhydride. The carboxylated styrene allyl alcohol copolymers can be used in aqueous or organic solvent solution in adhesive and surface coating applications.

  • Patent number: 4079183
Abstract: The esters are soluble in an aqueous solution of a base before exposure to actinic radiation but, on exposure to actinic radiation, polymerize and become insoluble in such an aqueous solution. Development of photopolymerized images does not therefore require the use of toxic or flammable organic solvents. They contain free carboxyl groups and at least one unit of the formula 1-IV ##STR1## where R.sup.1 is a carbon atom chain containing specified groupings, such as one of formula --CH.dbd.CH--CO--CH.dbd.CH--, --CH.dbd.CHCO--, --COCH.dbd.CHC.sub.6 H.sub.4 CH.dbd.CHCO--, or ##STR2## and Y is oxygen or sulfur. They are obtained by the reaction of an at least dianhydride of a polycarboxylic acid with alcoholic hydroxyl groups of an alcohol containing at least one unit of formula I-IV.

  • Patent number: 4068082
Abstract: Esters are prepared by reaction of acyl halides and alcohols or hydroxyalkyl esters and acid halides in the presence of a tertiary amine and polar aprotonic solvents. Bis(2-methacrylatoethyl) phthalate is prepared by the reaction of phthaloyl chloride with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate in pyridine and acetone. Bis-phenol-A-bis(2-methacrylatoethyl)ether is prepared from 2,2-bis[4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)phenyl]-propane and methacryl chloride in acetone.

  • Patent number: 4065630
Abstract: Novel polyoxyalkylene fluoroalkyltrimellitate compounds are disclosed that are useful for improving the soil release properties of textiles. These compounds may be conveniently prepared by reacting a fluorinated alkyl thiol or amine with trimellitic anhydride monoacid chloride to form a fluorinated trimellitic anhydride intermediate product which is then reacted with a polyoxyalkylene derivative.
