The module includes a needle shield for selectively covering a distal end of a needle. A needle hub is movably received within a proximal opening of the needle shield, and extends through a passageway of the needle shield. An actuation button is movably received in opposing lateral apertures of the needle shield to engage the needle shield, the needle hub and the medical device. In a first position an upper leg of the actuation button is received in a recess of the needle hub, and a lower leg of the actuation button is received in an undercut between the base and head of the medical device. In a second position, after the actuation button is actuated, the module is removable from the medical device.

    Abstract: One possible embodiment of the invention could be a hypodermic needle that rotatably connects to a shield comprising a hypodermic needle denoted into a distal needle portion and a proximal needle portion, the distal needle portion's injection aperture continuously connected to the proximal needle portion's connection aperture; a shield that comprises at least a skin pad portion, the proximal needle portion being rotatably held within a portion of the shield in a manner that allows the distal needle portion to be moved between an operative position, wherein the distal needle portion descends downward and away from a bottom of the skin pad portion to hold the needle tip away from the skin pad portion to a stored position that has the needle tip of the distal needle portion placed proximate to the skin pad portion.

A safety mechanism inside the cap allows the needle to be moved relative to the cap so long as the shaft of the needle biases against an edge of one of the legs of the mechanism. After the cannula is properly positioned in the implanted port to establish a fluid path between the port and the infuser, the needle is removed by being pulled upwards until it no longer biases the one leg of the mechanism. At which time the safety mechanism fixedly captures the needle inside the cap to prevent the contaminated tip of the needle from being exposed to the environment.
