    Abstract: An intravascular catheter (e.g. guide or diagnostic catheter) that includes a specially designed distal tip to provide enhanced back-up support. The distal tip (e.g., distal 2 cm of the shaft) has a lateral extent or profile (e.g., wave shape) that is larger than the lumen of the coronary artery adjacent the ostium when the tip is in a relaxed state. The over-sized lateral extent causes the distal tip to frictionally engage the coronary artery and anchor within the ostium. The lateral extent or profile of the distal tip may be decreased by inserting a guide wire therethrough to facilitate insertion of the distal tip into the ostium. After the distal tip is inserted into the ostium, the guide wire may be removed to allow the lateral extent of the distal tip to increase and thereby anchor the distal tip in the ostium.

The superelastic alloy material has a composition consisting of about 30% to about 52% (atomic) titanium, and about 38% to 52% nickel and may have one or more elements selected from the group consisting of iron, cobalt, platinum, palladium, vanadium, copper, zirconium, hafnium and niobium. The alloy material is subjected to thermomechanical processing which includes a final cold working of about 10 to about 75% and then a heat treatment at a temperature between about 450° and about 600° C. and preferably about 475° to about 550° C. Before the heat treatment the cold worked alloy material is preferably subjected to mechanical straightening. The alloy material is preferably subjected to stresses equal to about 5 to about 50% of the room temperature ultimate yield stress of the material during the thermal treatment.

From 2 to 12, and preferably from 4 to 8, wires (5) are used in the row, and fewer wires may be used proceeding toward the distal end (2) for greater flexibility. The helically wound row of wires transmits torque and provides pushability to the device while resisting kinking, and enables a small outside diameter for reaching very small vessels and extending through very tortuous vessels.

The sleeve has a length of approximately one-half the length of the sheath and may have greater stiffness than the sheath. The second sleeve has a length of approximately one-half the length of the first sleeve and may have greater stiffness than the first sleeve.

    Abstract: A cannula having reinforced sections and nonreinforced sections, the nonreinforced sections having openings communicating with the lumen of the cannula. The nonreinforced sections are plain tubing and the reinforced sections are formed by winding a coated elongate member in a helical manner around a mandrel. The coated elongate member preferably has a square cross-sectional shape so that adjacent portions of the coated elongate member engage one another when the coated elongate member is wound around the mandrel. The coated elongate member is then heated so that the coating on adjacent portions of the coated elongate member fuse together to form an integral structure. Another layer of material may be provided on the radially inner or outer wall of the coated elongate member. The resulting tubular body is reinforced by the elongate member which is encased in the fused coating. The tubular body is cut into sections which are fused to the plain tubing sections to form the cannula.

The arrangement of catheter tubes is then held in a sleeve and is advanced through the sleeve, and through a heating cylinder to fuse the outer surfaces of the catheter tubes. A cooling means is placed in the lumen of each catheter tube to prevent the inner surface of each catheter tube from melting.

    Abstract: A catheter 1 suitable for advancement through a body passageway of a patient. The catheter 1 comprises a catheter body 4 which is flexible to provide the necessary trackability for the catheter 1 to advance through a body passageway, and two stainless steel reinforcement wires 5 extending along the catheter body 4 which provide the necessary pushability to advance the catheter 1 through the passageway. The proximal end of the tip section is fixedly attached to the distal end of the catheter body. The flexible tubing comprises a plastic core, a metal braid over the core, a plastic skin over the braid, and at least two pieces of plastic tubing in longitudinal arrangement extruded over the plastic skin, wherein the at least two pieces of plastic tubing have different stiffnesses and are arranged with the stiffer plastic being proximal the less stiff plastic. The tip section is made by extruding a plastic core over at least one mandrel and braiding a metal over the plastic core.
