Abstract: A method for controlling a manipulator includes a joint structure portion having one or more joints connected to a distal end of an insertion portion, a power transmission member inserted into the insertion portion to transmit driving force to the joint structure portion, and a driving portion that drives the power transmission member and which is guided to an application site by being inserted into the channel member. When the manipulator is operated in an insertion control mode for inserting the joint structure portion into the channel member, the method includes detecting a load amount generated in the power transmission member or the driving portion; and creating a bending state in which the joint structure portion follows the channel member by controlling a driving amount of the power transmission member by the driving portion such that the load amount becomes within a predetermined target control range.

Abstract: A print data generating apparatus obtains a BRDF model group for each of a plurality of colors and the angle of incident light in the environment where an object to be reproduced is to be viewed. The print data generating apparatus then applies the angle of the incident light thus obtained to each of the models in the BRDF model group to thereby calculate the reflection distribution of the object to be reproduced for which the angle of the incident light is limited. The print data generating apparatus then outputs color data and form data for each of the models in the BRDF model group based on the reflection distribution, the color data indicating a color to be formed on the surface of the object to be reproduced, the form data indicating the form of the object to be reproduced.

  • Patent number: 9984489
Abstract: An animated special effect is modeled using a fluid dynamics framework system. The fluid dynamics framework for animated special effects system accepts volumetric data as input. Input volumetric data may represent the initial state of an animated special effect. Input volumetric data may also represent sources, sinks, external forces, and/or other influences on the animated special effect. In addition, the system accepts input parameters related to fluid dynamics modeling. The input volumes and parameters are applied to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations as modifications to the initial state of the animated special effect, as modifications to the forcing term of a pressure equation, or in the computations of other types of forces that influence the solution. The input volumetric data may be composited with other volumetric data using a scalar blending field. The solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations models the motion of the animated special effect.

  • Patent number: 8992446
Abstract: Dual-axis swallowing accelerometry is an emerging tool for the assessment of dysphagia (swallowing difficulties). These signals however can be very noisy as a result of physiological and motion artifacts. A novel scheme for denoising those signals is proposed, i.e., a computationally efficient search for the optimal denoising threshold within a reduced wavelet subspace. To determine a viable subspace, the algorithm relies on the minimum value of the estimated upper bound for the reconstruction error. A numerical analysis of the proposed scheme using synthetic test signals demonstrated that the proposed scheme is computationally more efficient than minimum noiseless description length (MNDL) based de-noising. It also yields smaller reconstruction errors (i.e., higher signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio) than MNDL, SURE and Donoho denoising methods. When applied to dual-axis swallowing accelerometry signals, the proposed scheme improves the SNR values for dry, wet and wet chin tuck swallows.

Abstract: Techniques for monitoring and predicting environmental operating conditions in a data center are provided. In one aspect, a method for real-time, three-dimensional analysis of environmental operating conditions in a data center includes the following steps. High spatial resolution three-dimensional measurements of one or more environmental variables in the data center made at a time t1 are obtained. Real-time measurements of the environmental variables in the data center made at a time t2, wherein t2 is later in time than t1, are obtained. The high spatial resolution three-dimensional measurements are combined with the real-time measurements to derive a model for the environmental variables in the data center at the time t2. The model is used to predict three-dimensional distributions of the environmental variables in the data center at the time t2. A base model can be created and used to derive the model for the data center at the time t2.

  • Patent number: 8731882
Abstract: Improved convergence in the volume-integral method (VIM) of calculating electromagnetic scattering properties of a structure is achieved by numerically solving a volume integral equation for a vector field, F, rather than the electric field, E. The electric field, E, is determined from the vector field, F, after solving of the volume integral equation. The vector field, F, may be related to the electric field, E, by a change of basis, and may be continuous at material boundaries where the electric field, E, has discontinuities. Convolutions of the vector field, F, are performed using convolution operators according to the finite Laurent rule, which allows for efficient matrix-vector products using Fast Fourier Transforms. An invertible convolution-and-change-of-basis operator, C, is configured to transform the vector field, F, to the electric field, E, by performing a change of basis according to material and geometric properties of the periodic structure.
