  • Patent number: 8992446
Abstract: Dual-axis swallowing accelerometry is an emerging tool for the assessment of dysphagia (swallowing difficulties). These signals however can be very noisy as a result of physiological and motion artifacts. A novel scheme for denoising those signals is proposed, i.e., a computationally efficient search for the optimal denoising threshold within a reduced wavelet subspace. To determine a viable subspace, the algorithm relies on the minimum value of the estimated upper bound for the reconstruction error. A numerical analysis of the proposed scheme using synthetic test signals demonstrated that the proposed scheme is computationally more efficient than minimum noiseless description length (MNDL) based de-noising. It also yields smaller reconstruction errors (i.e., higher signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio) than MNDL, SURE and Donoho denoising methods. When applied to dual-axis swallowing accelerometry signals, the proposed scheme improves the SNR values for dry, wet and wet chin tuck swallows.

Abstract: A method for transforming seismic surface waves into depth profiles of dynamic properties of the soil such as the soil shear modulus or wave velocity or wave attenuation. The invention uses seismic data recorded preferably with a plurality of sources and receivers with a two-stage inversion approach. First, variations in surface-wave waveforms are decomposed (303) into surface-consistent transfer functions preferably for each source, each receiver, and each small region (301) of the surface. Then the transfer functions for each region are inverted (308) to determine soil properties or near-surface properties (such as the shear modulus) as a function of depth. The method can solve for the complex multi-mode nature of the surface waves for a media with both vertical and lateral changes in properties. Errors and limits in resolution for traditional methods from misidentification of ground roll modes or from assuming laterally uniform soil properties are avoided.

Abstract: Improved convergence in the volume-integral method (VIM) of calculating electromagnetic scattering properties of a structure is achieved by numerically solving a volume integral equation for a vector field, F, rather than the electric field, E. The electric field, E, is determined from the vector field, F, after solving of the volume integral equation. The vector field, F, may be related to the electric field, E, by a change of basis, and may be continuous at material boundaries where the electric field, E, has discontinuities. Convolutions of the vector field, F, are performed using convolution operators according to the finite Laurent rule, which allows for efficient matrix-vector products using Fast Fourier Transforms. An invertible convolution-and-change-of-basis operator, C, is configured to transform the vector field, F, to the electric field, E, by performing a change of basis according to material and geometric properties of the periodic structure.

To this extent, there is defined a set X including N distinct parameter values x_i for at least one input parameter x, N being an integer greater than or equal to 1, first measured the physical quantity Pm1 for each of the N distinct parameter values x_i of the at least one input parameter x, while keeping all other input parameters fixed, constructed a Vandermonde matrix VM using the set of N parameter values x_i of the at least one input parameter x, and computed the model W for emulating the physical quantity P based on the Vandermonde matrix and the first measured physical quantity according to the equation W=(VMT*VM)?1*VMT*Pm1. The model is iteratively refined so as to obtained a desired emulation precision. The model can later be used to emulate the physical quantity based on input parameters or logs taken from the field and thereby support device design optimization.

Abstract: A projection operator framework is described to analyze the concept of localized normal-vector fields within field-material interactions in a spectral basis, in isotropic and anisotropic media. Generate a localized normal-vector field n in a region of the structure defined by the material boundary, decomposed into sub-regions with a predefined normal-vector field and possibly corresponding closed-form integrals. Construct a continuous vector field F using the normal-vector field to select continuous components ET and Dn. Localized integration of normal-vector field n over the sub-regions to determine coefficients of, C. Determine components Ex, Ey, Ez of the electromagnetic field by using field-material interaction operator C to operate on vector field F. Calculate electromagnetic scattering properties of the structure using the determined components of the electromagnetic field.

  • Patent number: 8676550
Abstract: A system and method are described that model a passive multiplexer, which may be used for a junction of a plurality of signal filters (e.g., radio frequency, microwave, satellite, etc.). Illustratively, based on obtaining parameters for the individual signal filters, an initial resonant frequency offset vector estimation may be calculated and input into a convergence algorithm to determine a set of multiplexer parameters. In particular, the convergence algorithm is generally different from the initial resonant frequency offset vector estimation calculation, and the initial resonant frequency offset vector estimation assists in achieving better (e.g., faster, more frequent) convergence on a set of multiplexer parameters from the convergence algorithm.

  • Patent number: 8666711
Abstract: A radiation analysis system/method that automatically optimizes the efficiency calibration of a counting system based on benchmark data and variable parameters associated with radiation source/sensor/environment (RSSE) combinations is disclosed. The system/method bifurcates RSSE context (SSEC) model parameters into WELL-KNOWN (fixed) parameters (WNP) and NOT-WELL-KNOWN (variable) parameters (NWP). The NWP have associated lower/upper limit values (LULV) and a shape distribution (LUSD) describing NWP characteristics. SSEC models are evaluated using randomized statistical NWP variations or by using smart routines that perform a focused search within the LULV/LUSD to generate model calibration values (MCV) and calibration uncertainty values (UCV) describing the overall SSEC efficiencies. Sensor measurements using the MCV/UCV generate a measurement value and uncertainty estimation value.
