Abstract: The present invention is directed to selecting an advertisement to be presented in an ad space of a webpage. A criterion (e.g., keyword, image, audio element, etc.) is selected to evoke the advertisement. In an embodiment, the criterion is selected based on a relevance of the criteria to a user, and not necessarily based solely on a relevance to the webpage. Whether a criterion should be used to evoke the advertisement might be based on various factors, such as the likelihood that the user will select a criterion-evoked advertisement, regardless of whether the criterion appears in among content of the webpage, and an expected gain of presenting the criterion-evoked advertisement.

  • Patent number: 8527339
Abstract: A “Quality-Based Ad Pricer” prices ads as a function of how users respond to a particular page and/or domain to which they are sent by an online advertisement. User experience is improved by ensuring that advertisements that are more relevant to a user are priced less than an ads which are less relevant to the user. In particular, a quality factor for each ad is determined as a property of the advertiser's site based on measured user behaviors with respect to that site. This quality factor is then used in ranking, selecting, and pricing ads in an automated online auction. Further, while ad aggregators are not excluded from the ad market by the pricing rules of the Quality-Based Ad Pricer, these rules ensure that there is a “level playing field” such that ads of merchants are not excluded by the ads of ad aggregators.

Abstract: Blog advertisement selection and placement is driven by the analysis of different facets, which are defined as why-facet, how-facet, who-facet and what-facet. The objective of defining such facets and their labels is to be able to better classify and distinguish information from blogs with the goal to use these different facets to better target advertisements on blogs. A model of features is built and maintained that classifies information from blogs along the defined facets. The features, including non-keywords and keywords, are extracted from a set of blogs of at least one blogosphere. Non-keywords are related to the blog information and keywords, and assist the keywords in the classification of the different facets/labels. An advertising campaign is defined in terms of the defined facets. The model and the defined advertising campaign will then be able to determine and/or predict placement of an advertisement in a blog or blog page.

Abstract: A social networking system captures performance metrics of an offer by selecting a whisper code to include in an offer when presenting the offer to users of the social networking system. The social networking system receives information for providing its users with an offer for redemption at a merchant establishment. The social networking system also receives a set of rules for selecting a whisper code to go with the offer. The rules may be based on any context for which the advertiser or merchant may want to track performance of the offer. When presenting the offer, the social networking system selects a whisper code using those rules. This tracking using different whisper codes enables the merchant to understand the performance of the offer campaign based on the context in which the social networking system presents the offers to its users.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and computer-readable storage media for predicting advertiser keyword performance indicator values based on proximity of advertisers to one another are provided. A keyword is received from a first advertiser that has not previously bid on the keyword. Another advertiser that is similar to the first advertiser and has previously bid on the keyword is identified, and a predicted performance indicator value for the keyword is calculated for the first advertiser based upon an established performance indicator value of the keyword for the other advertiser. In this way, performance predictions for an advertiser desiring to bid on a keyword that is new to that advertiser may be calculated more accurately than traditional methods that do not take into account advertiser similarity.
