Abstract: A system for recommending feeds for a user comprises a client with a web browser, an application server, and a content server. The browser tracks the user's browsing activity and transmits user data related to the user's browsing activity to the application server. The application server searches the content server to determine feeds that may be relevant to the user's browsing activity and then communicates those feeds to the browser. The browser displays the received feeds to the user as feed recommendations, prompting the user to select from among the recommended feeds. Once the user has selected one or more feeds, the browser transmits the user's selection to the application server, which enables the feeds to be presented subsequently to the user. In this way, the system uses the user's browsing activity to obtain automatically for a user feeds that are likely to be relevant to the user.

Abstract: Processing resources at a storage system for a database server are utilized to perform aspects of a join operation that would conventionally be performed by the database server. When requesting a range of data units from a storage system, the database server includes join metadata describing aspects of the join operation for which the data is being requested. The join metadata may be, for instance, a bloom filter. The storage system reads the requested data from disk as normal. However, prior to sending the requested data back to the storage system, the storage system analyzes the raw data based on the join metadata, removing a certain amount of data that is guaranteed to be irrelevant to the join operation. The storage system then returns filtered data to the database server. The database system thereby avoids the unnecessary transfer of certain data between the storage system and the database server.

The sort engine determines, from a sort request for a column of the table received from a user, at least a first priority for a first data type, the column including at least two of the data types, determines from the sort request a second priority within one of the data types, and sorts the column according to the sort request.

Abstract: Each of multiple images is analyzed to determine how the colors of the pixels of the image are distributed throughout the color space of the image. Different covariance based characteristics of the image are determined that identify a direction, as well as magnitude in each direction, of the distribution of colors of the image pixels. These different covariance based characteristics that are determined for an image can be saved as associated with the image, allowing the characteristics to be accessed and used as a basis for searching the images to identify particular types of images. These different covariance based characteristics can also be used to order the images identified by a search.

Abstract: A classifier training system learns classifiers for categories by combining data from a category-instance repository comprising relationships between categories and more specific instances of those categories with a set of video classifiers for different concepts. The category-instance repository is derived from the domain of textual documents, such as web pages, and the concept classifiers are derived from the domain of video. Taken together, the category-instance repository and the concept classifiers provide sufficient data for obtaining accurate classifiers for categories that encompass other lower-level concepts, where the categories and their classifiers may not be obtainable solely from the video domain.

Abstract: A method and system for identifying a group of objects or content that have a plurality of group-wise connections, and for revealing the evolution of the state of those connections over time. A network of symbols are generated to create a symbol backbone, and raw object or content descriptions are mapped to the generated symbols. To identify the objects or content most closely and most interconnectedly related to a query object or content, the query object or content is mapped onto the symbol backbone. The raw object or content description expression set of the related symbols are retrieved, forming the group of interconnected objects or content. The retrieved object or content descriptions can be further refined.

A plurality of extraction rules may be provided to the system, such as automatically generated and/or user created extraction rules. These extraction rules may include regular expressions. A plurality of event records may be displayed to the user, such that text in a field defined by an extraction rule is emphasized in the display of the event record. The same emphasis may be provided for text in overlapping fields, or the emphasis may be somewhat different for different fields. The user interface may enable a user to select a portion of text of an event record, such as by rolling-over or clicking on an emphasized part of the event record. By selecting the portion of the event record, the interface may display each extraction rule associated with the selected portion.

During early predicate evaluation, the result that a decoded token in a column does not satisfy a predicate condition in a predicate conjunction is recorded in a cache as a “FALSE”. Such a result not only means that when the column contains that token that the predicate condition is not satisfied, but also that a predicate conjunction containing the predicate condition is not satisfied. When performing early predicate evaluation on a subsequent row on a token in a column, the conjunction result cache is referred to. If the cache records a FALSE for that token in that column, then it is known the predicate conjunction cannot be satisfied by the decoded token.

Abstract: A method for pre-filtering visual objects on a document is disclosed. A selection of a template visual object with constituent components from a subsection of the document is received. Then, a feature set is derived, including a color list of colors defining the object components, a bounding definition of the object components, and an ancillary raster component intersection flag. A subset of pre-filtered visual objects is generated from the visual objects on the document. These match a predefined criteria based on the color list, live hounding definition, or the ancillary raster component intersection flag. A pre-filtered document raster image is then generated from the document, where the pixels corresponding to the pre-filtered visual objects are included.

Abstract: Embodiments include a program product and a method for providing responses to questions provided on a social media site. The method includes receiving, via a processor, a user question from a social networking site and decomposing and filtering the user question so that it can be further analyzed. The method also includes generating a list of most closely matched potential responders based on analysis of the user question and sending the most closely matched potential responders the user question. Upon receiving responses back from the most closest matched potential responders, these responses are aggregated by the processor in a final response format.

A user-to-user similarity matrix is calculated and a predicted score is assigned for each user and item, using a recommendation server. All the items in the catalog of items are sorted according to their predicted scores as calculated for the user, and all items that have been already rated by the user are filtered out. Then, items from the catalog of items are presented to the user, according to their scores.

Abstract: A method for filtering user information takes into account not only specific keywords in the user information, but also related user-characteristic data (e.g., user activity data), and allows targeted user characteristics to be determined from multiple aspects of user activities. In one aspect, the disclosed method adopts different filtering schemes for different types of targeted users to improve the recognition accuracy with respect to the target user information. The method determines a suitable filtering scheme using a correspondence relationship between the filtering scheme and keywords and user-characteristic data. The method uses modeling of sample users and multiple candidate filtering schemes to formulate targeted filtering scheme. An apparatus for implementing the method is also disclosed.
