Abstract: A system and method for error tolerant content delivery is provided. A data file for transmission including metadata and data is received. The metadata includes mandatory portions and optional portions. The file is parsed into packets and transmitted as a data stream to a plurality of receiver devices, which may look for transmission errors in the control data of the data stream. Data streams comprising errors are discarded; otherwise, the receiver device converts the data stream into the native file format and stores it. The system may bifurcate each data file into the common encrypted content and the uniquely encrypted portion. The commonly encrypted portion of the file may be transmitted to a plurality of receiver devices using a multicast transmission medium, and the relatively small uniquely encrypted portions may be transmitted using a unicast method to each receiver individually. The receiver device may then reconstitute the DRM data file.

Abstract: A communication device configured for transmission of Acknowledgement and Negative Acknowledgement (ACK/NACK) is described. The communication device includes a processor and instructions stored in memory. The communication device determines one or more thresholds based on a size of one or more code words and generates a compressed ACK/NACK sequence. The compressed ACK/NACK sequence identifies one or more correctly received code words and one or more incorrectly received code words if the number of incorrectly received code words is less than the threshold. If the number of incorrectly received code words is greater than the threshold, the compressed ACK/NACK sequence indicates that all of the one or more code words were incorrectly received.

The clock is coupled to the functional unit and the wireless transceiver. The clock is generates a clock signal. The wireless device is coupled wirelessly to a wireless slave device. The functional unit is configured to determine an amount of time since a last keep alive transmission with the slave device has occurred based on the clock. The functional unit determines a number of keep alive transmissions to transmit to the slave device, and appropriate transmission times for the keep alive transmissions relative to a next scheduled keep alive transmission time, based on the determined amount of time since the last keep alive transmission. The functional unit begins successive transmission of the keep alive transmissions to the slave device per the transmission times.

  • Patent number: 8503452
Abstract: Techniques for performing duplicate detection and re-ordering for a HARQ transmission are described. For duplicate detection, a receiver determines whether a decoded packet x for an ARQ channel y is a duplicate packet based on packet x and a prior decoded packet for ARQ channel y. For re-ordering, the receiver determines whether an earlier packet is still pending on any other ARQ channel based on prior decoded packets for the ARQ channels and forwards packet x only if there are no pending earlier packets. There are no pending earlier packets on another ARQ channel z if (1) a decoded packet was received on ARQ channel z at a designated time or later or (2) a decoded packet was not received on ARQ channel z within a time window from current time.

  • Patent number: 8503351
Abstract: Systems and methods for packet re-transmission in multi-hop wireless networks are provided. RLP packet retransmission only starts from the hop where L1 ARQ fails. This may result in an increased efficiency of radio resource utilization. In particular, the benefit may be greatest for implementations where the last hop is more unstable than the remaining hops. This is the case for the cellular downlink where the last hop is between a relay and a mobile terminal, and this hop is typically the most unstable. However, applications are not limited to this particular case. Any improvement in RLP recovery delay may be translated into an improvement in system capacity and per-terminal throughput.

  • Patent number: 8503451
Abstract: In a frame-switched network, a sender sends frames to a receiver over a possibly unreliable channel. Sent frames include frame identifiers that can be used for a limited automatic repeat request. Upon receipt of a frame, the receiver determines, from the frame identifier, if frames prior to the received frame were lost in transit. If the receiver determines that it missed a prior frame, the receiver sends the sender a negative acknowledgment (nack) for the missed prior frame or frames. Otherwise, if the receiver receives a frame correctly, it does not acknowledge the frame. The frame identifiers can be a set of sequential integers with frames transmitted in sequential frame order. In some embodiments, when a receiver receives a frame out of order, the receiver buffers the out of order frame in a receiver buffer for a receive buffer period until preceding frames are received or a receive buffer period expires.

  • Patent number: 8504872
Abstract: Method and system are disclosed for redelivering failed messages in asynchronous communication systems. The methods and systems automatically delay redelivery of such failed messages in order to allow required system resources to become available. In one implementation, the methods and systems provide two levels of redelivery: a micro level in which redelivery is attempted right away for a certain number of times, and a macro level in which a predefined, user-selectable delay is imposed before any additional micro level redeliveries are attempted. After a certain number of unsuccessful macro level redeliveries, the message is backed out to a backout queue for manual intervention by a system operator. Such an arrangement reduces or eliminates the burden on the system operator to manually resolve failed message deliveries.

  • Patent number: 8499211
Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for the repair of IP multicast sessions. A repair server polls multiple transmit servers to accumulate as many of the packets missing from the multicast session as possible. A network includes a source of multicast packets in a multicast session and a plurality of multicast recipients in that session. A repair server in the network provides the packets it receives to the recipients. The repair server includes a missing packet detector. There is a plurality of retransmit servers in the network buffering portions of the packets they respectively receive during the session. The repair server maintains an ordered list of the retransmit servers that are most likely to have buffered copies of packets missing from the session. When the repair server detects that there are packets missing from the session it has received, it uses the ordered list to sequentially request the missing packets from respective ones of the plurality of retransmit servers.

Abstract: A method and apparatus according to the present invention addresses and/or prevents lost protocol synchronization in HARQ systems caused by ACK/NACK errors. One embodiment detects lost synchronization errors for NDI-based retransmission protocols and restores synchronization by sending an explicit RESET message. In response to the RESET message, the transmitter aborts the transmission of a current PDU and transmits a new PDU and corresponding NDI. Another embodiment prevents protocol synchronization errors by sending scheduling grants on a packet by packet basis. The receiver sends a subsequent explicit scheduling grant to the transmitter based on an error evaluation of a received PDU. The transmitter will not send the next PDU unless it receives the subsequent explicit scheduling grant.

  • Patent number: 8489949
Abstract: Embodiments disclosed herein address the need in the art for reduced overhead control with the ability to adjust transmission rates as necessary. In one aspect, a first signal indicates an acknowledgement of a decoded subpacket and whether or not a rate control command is generated, and a second signal conditionally indicates the rate control command when one is generated. In another aspect, a grant may be generated concurrently with the acknowledgement. In yet another aspect, a mobile station monitors the first signal, conditionally monitors the second signal as indicated by the first signal, and may monitor a third signal comprising a grant. In yet another aspect, one or more base stations transmit one or more of the various signals. Various other aspects are also presented. These aspects have the benefit of providing the flexibility of grant-based control while utilizing lower overhead when rate control commands are used, thus increasing system utilization, increasing capacity and throughput.
