Abstract: A method for arranging icons in an electronic device is provided. The electronic device includes a storage unit storing a table recording icons provided by the electronic device and the number of click frequency of each of the icons. The method includes recording which of the icons is clicked and updating the number of click frequency of the clicked icon in the table, further causing the number of click frequency of the clicked icon to increase one if the icon is clicked. Then, arranging some of the icons according to the number of click frequency recorded in the table if a currently run application is closed.

Abstract: Previewing content included in an enterprise database associated with an enterprise system is disclosed. A first indication is received for an overlay object associated with an object from the enterprise database that is being displayed. an action list is dynamically determined associated with the object being displayed using a first method to retrieve actions from the enterprise system that are associated with the object being displayed. The action list is provided to the overlay object. Content associated with the object is dynamically determined using a second method to retrieve content from the enterprise system. The content is provided to the overlay object. The overlay object is displayed to preview the content included in the enterprise database and to provide the action list.

Abstract: Provided is a method in a wireless mobile terminal for inputting characters. The method includes computing a probability value for each character which may be entered after a user inputs a particular character from among characters assigned to each button on a key input section by pressing a button and, storing the probability value in a memory of the mobile terminal, the probability value being based on a detection frequency of each character to be detected after a particular character in preset words. A character, as a first input character, having been inputted by the user according to the number of times a first button has been pressed in character input mode, based on a first character arrangement preset on the first button, is displayed on a display section.

Abstract: A method of presenting digital content to a user on a display of a computing device displaying a continuous stream of digital content in a stream portion of the display, obtaining a current context of the user and the computing device, providing contextual sensitivities for the digital content items, determining a value for the digital content item's relevance of being displayed, calculating a probability of displaying the digital content item based upon the value of the digital content item's relevance of being displayed, performing a random selection of the digital content item based upon the probability of displaying the digital content item, and presenting the digital content item in the stream of digital content being displayed.

Abstract: A gallery software application enables a user to browse, view, and interact with various content items, such as still images and videos. The gallery includes a graphical user interface, where a content item is represented by an image. A group of content items is represented by a displayed stack of partially-overlapping images. A content item is associated with geo-location information and timestamp information. This information is used to divide the content items into groups.

Abstract: A method, system, and computer program product for intelligent command prediction are provided. The method includes determining a command prediction preference associated with a user from user profile data, and selecting one or more command history repositories responsive to the command prediction preference. The one or more command history repositories include command history data collected from a plurality of users and classification data associated with the plurality of users. The method also includes calculating command probabilities for commands in the command history data of the selected one or more command history repositories as a function of the classification data associated with the plurality of users in relation to the user. The method additionally includes presenting a next suggested command as a command from the command history data of the selected one or more command history repositories with a highest calculated command probability.

A client computer provides a user interface for a computer program application. The user interface is operable to receive input from a user interacting with the client and to generate user interaction events from the input. One or more possible user interaction events are identified on the client while the user interface is in a current user interface state. The possible user interaction events are user interaction events that would arise from input the user interface could possibly receive in the current user interface state from the user. One or more of the possible user interaction events are pre-processed to generate one or more possible user interface states. The possible user interface states are stored for later use.

A key (or button) may be associated with the stored menu selection such that activating the key causes the menu associated with the stored menu selection to be retrieved and displayed on the user interface.

Abstract: An operation assisting apparatus includes: an option-function distance storage unit that stores a semantic distance between each of the options displayed on a menu screen and each of functions positioned at an end in the hierarchical structure; an operation history storage unit that stores the operation history of the options sequentially selected by the user; an estimation unit that estimates, based on a semantic distance between a selection option selected by the user and each of the functions, and a semantic distance between an unselected selection option that has been selectable but not selected and each of the functions, a degree of probability that the function is the function desired by the user; and an operational assistance determination unit that determines, based on the result of the estimation, a detail of an output such that functions with higher probability will be presented with higher precedence in selectability.

Abstract: A system for operating an astronomical observatory made up of astronomical hardware, utilizing a web browser operated by a user, and a web server connected to the observatory, wherein both the control to, and feedback from the observatory are displayed to the user in real time independent of personnel support at the observatory site. The user submits a request to the observatory via the web browser, which displays the status and results of the request. A web server, coupled to the various astronomical hardware, processes the request on behalf of the user and responds with the status and results of the request. The status and/or results are then displayed by the web browser to the user. Requests may be made by the user interactively, or in the form of a script. The system may be used over wide area networks, like the Internet, or any other type of network.

Abstract: A method and system for utilizing user information to provide a network address. The method collects user information about a user from at least one electronic device that is associated with the user. In addition, a network address activity pattern is identified based on a combination of a network browsing activity and the user information. A list of network addresses that have been viewed in context of the activity pattern is then accessed. At least one network address on the list of network addresses is scored. Then, the at least one network address having a highest score is provided to the user.

Abstract: Two items are determined to be similar to each not only based on previous actual user behavior, but also based on the observed relatedness of the characteristics of those two items. A first characteristic and a second characteristic are determined to have some affinity for each other if a high proportion of users who select items having the first characteristics also select items that have the second characteristic, and vice-versa. Two items having characteristics with high affinity for each other are determined to have some similarity to each other, even if very few or no users who selected one of those items ever selected the other of those items. A first item that is determined to be sufficiently similar to second item in this manner may be recommended to a user who has selected the second item as potentially also being of interest to that user.

To create the custom user interface, the end user can customize one or more default user interface files to create custom user interface files. The default user interface files can comprise one or more of a structure definition file, a content definition file, and a content display file. Additionally, the custom user interface can be associated with a program module function that can execute in connection with displaying the custom user interface.

Abstract: Methods, systems, articles of manufacture, and apparatus for causing a computer system such as a media device to perform operations may include receiving input from the user selecting a media type category, identifying media content items within the selected media category that the user has previously selected for presentation, prioritizing the identified media content items based on a predetermined set of rules, and presenting to the user a menu of at least some of the identified media content items in an order based on a result of the prioritization.

Abstract: A method for providing touch screen-based user interface and a portable terminal adapted to the method are provided. The method includes setting types and display order of icons to be displayed on a touch screen, sensing a touch input to the touch screen, measuring a time that the touch input is retained on the touch screen, and displaying at least one icon, in an order, according to the measured touch input retaining time and the set types and display order of icons. The touch screen-based user interface providing method can allow a user to easily search for and operate a corresponding function, via a relatively small number of touch inputting actions, thereby enhancing the user's experience while the user is using the portable terminal.

When the portal is displayed, if the user actuates a control corresponding to a property in a portlet, a menu of actions that can be performed with that data by other portlets is provided to the user. In addition to this “conventional” manner, an alternative manner of actuating the component is provided to the user such that if the user actuates the control in this alternative manner, the user is provided the option of making the chosen action “persistent,” so that the next time the control is actuated by the user, or the associated property is otherwise produced, the chosen action is performed automatically, without requiring the user to choose an action.

The first area includes visual indicators of the currently running applications and the applications likely to be run in the future. The second area includes the open windows of the currently running applications, where the open windows are resized and positioned in such a way as to be simultaneously viewable by the user.

Abstract: A method for providing a workspace management tool includes presenting a workspace overview graphical user interface (GUI) having a first area and a second area. The first area includes visual indicators of favorite applications of a user, and the second area includes multiple regions, each region representing a different work space. The method further includes receiving, via the workspace overview GUI, a user request to open a new window for one of the favorite applications in a first work space, adding the new window to the first work space, and presenting the new window in a reduced form in a region representing the first work space without overlapping other open windows of the first work space.

Abstract: Systems, methods, and articles of manufacture for displaying user-selection controls associated with clusters on a GUI are provided. One exemplary method includes automatically generating a first table having URLs associated with websites accessed by at least one user over a time interval and content information associated with the URLs. The method further includes automatically determining cluster names for grouping the URLs based on the content information. Each cluster name has at least one URL associated therewith. The method further includes automatically generating a second table having the cluster names and URLs associated with the cluster names. The method further includes displaying the GUI having the user-selection controls associated with the cluster names on a display device, utilizing the second table.

The patterns analysis system guides the user interaction through the selection of specific available patterns. Also, the user does not need knowledge of the contents or organization of the multi-dimensional storage structure.

Abstract: A system and method for managing software application windows in a graphical user interface having a desktop and taskbar display area are provided. Each instantiated program is represented as one or more graphical windows in the desktop and as a control tile in the taskbar. Control tiles are grouped into control tile groups that facilitate organization and single access control. Project control tile groups allow the grouping of multiple software applications. Additionally, minimized control tile group layout and state may be preserved and previewed prior to being restored.

Abstract: There are provided an image processing apparatus, an image generating apparatus, and an image processing method, capable of automating assignment of keys to functions and registration of macros provided by the image generating apparatus and presenting an index such as a shortcut key associated with one of the registered functions to a user at the timing when the user uses that function. To achieve this, first an operation command issued by a user through a control panel 1000 is received and history information about the operation command is stored in a storage device 900. A controller unit 200 detects history information about an operation command received through the control panel 1000 from among the history information, creates and registers a shortcut key for performing a operation command received through the control panel 1000 on the basis of the result of the detection, and presents the shortcut key to the user at a predetermined timing.

Abstract: Systems, methods and articles of manufacture are disclosed for generating a webpage. In one embodiment, a request may be received from a user to view the webpage that includes portlets. A time of the request may be identified. The portlets may be provided. Based on an interaction history of the user and the identified time of the request, the portlets may be arranged on the webpage. The webpage may be output for display, in response to the request.

Abstract: A method of designing an interface system that allows users to map the representation of their task directly to the interface. There are three major phases to the Customer-Centric Approach to Interface Design (C-CAID). End-users' tasks are categorized to determine the frequency of reasons or tasks of why users interact with a particular system. These reasons and their relative frequencies are used to design interface options that emphasize the user's task categories. Finally, the customer-centric interface designs are evaluated and compared with existing system interfaces using usability tests with actual users performing the tasks. The results from usability tests are used to pinpoint the task-option combinations that do not work well and which should be revised. Benefits of this customer-centric design are improved systems performance and increased user satisfaction.

Abstract: The present invention provides a unique system and method for facilitating browsing, sorting, clustering, and filtering any number of media objects grouped together in a quick and easy manner. In particular, the invention involves annotating the media objects, which have been clustered, sorted, and/or filtered en masse rather than individually, with metadata. The media objects may be selected by a user and annotated with a plurality of metadata as desired by a user in order to optimize utilization of the media objects. The media objects may also be combined and/or mixed in any number of ways to create new media objects. Media objects may include an audio component, a visual component, a portion thereof, and/or any combination thereof.

Abstract: A handheld electronic device includes a reduced QWERTY keyboard and is enabled with disambiguation software. The device provides output in the form of a default output and a number of variants. The output is based largely upon the frequency, i.e., the likelihood that a user intended a particular output, but various features of the device provide additional variants that are not based solely on frequency and rather are provided by various logic structures resident on the device. The device enables editing during text entry and also provides a learning function that allows the disambiguation function to adapt to provide a customized experience for the user. The disambiguation function can be selectively disabled and an alternate keystroke interpretation system provided.

Abstract: A character conversion apparatus makes a predictive search of a conversion database for conversion candidates on the basis of one or more characters inputted by use of a character input key. The apparatus obtains, in reference to a table, the total number of times the character input key is to be pressed down before inputting an unconverted character included in each of the searched conversion candidates and immediately following the one or more characters. The table contains characters assigned to the total numbers of times the character input key is pressed down. The apparatus determines the order of display, on a screen of a display device, of the conversion candidates to align with a descending order of the total number of times the character input key is to be pressed down before inputting the unconverted character. On the screen, the conversion candidates are displayed in the determined order of display. The apparatus receives confirmation of one of the conversion candidates.

The inputs specify text and selection of an action from a menu to be performed on the text. An alternative technique is displayed that may be utilized to enter the text and perform the action.

Abstract: A method of operating an entertainment system includes computer-implemented steps including accessing a source of audio/video content. The source is capable of providing a plurality of media items. The media items are analyzed to thereby determine a corresponding classification for each of the items. A visual representation of each of the classifications is provided on a display of the entertainment system. One of the classifications being selected by a user is sensed. In response to the sensing, one of the media items corresponding to the selected classification is played, and/or the user is offered a choice among a plurality of the media items corresponding to the selected classification.

Abstract: The need for a more readily usable interface for programmable devices is widely recognized. The present invention relates to programmable sequencing devices, or, more particularly, the remote controls for consumer electronic devices. The present invention provides an enhanced interface for facilitating human input of a desired control sequence in a programmable device by employing specialized visual feedback. The present invention also relates to a new interface and method of interfacing with a programmable device, which is usable as an interface for a programmable video cassette recorder.

Abstract: An improved handheld electronic device includes an input apparatus, an output apparatus, and a processor apparatus. The input apparatus includes a multi-axis input device such as a rollerball, trackball, joystick or touchpad, allowing the focus of a user interface program to be moved about a display from one screen object presented on that display to another. Up to four screen objects are presented on the display, each of those screen objects being positioned towards a corner of the display to enable a user to blindly operate the multi-axis input device, making use of a capture effect in which the focus of a user interface program is resisted from moving beyond an edge of the display, to guide movement of the focus to a given one of the up to four screen objects.

Abstract: In an electronic device capable of running multiple software applications concurrently, applications, documents, cards, or other activities can be selected for hibernation so as to free up system resources for other activities that are in active use. A determination is made as to which activities should hibernate, for example based on a determination as to which activities have not been used recently or based on relative resource usage. When an activity is to hibernate, its state is preserved on a storage medium such as a disk, so that the activity can later be revived in the same state and the user can continue with the same task that was being performed before the activity entered hibernation.

Abstract: A computer implemented method displays an object. The method includes causing the display of a context specific shortcut menu in response to a user command. The menu can include a set of functions relating to the context of the displayed object and a set of a predetermined number of the most recently used functions relating to the context of the displayed object. The most recently used functions can be displayed above the other functions.
