Abstract: A method and apparatus for operating the user interface of a slider type portable mobile communications device is disclosed. A mode of operation of the slider type portable mobile communications device is determined. Motion of a slider mechanism is detected with respect to a neutral position. The motion of the slider mechanism indicates an action to perform based on the mode of operation of the portable mobile communications device. The action indicated is then performed based on the mode of operation of the portable mobile communications device.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for viewing one or more images using a floating controller is provided. A collection of digital images may be managed using a digital image system that displays images using a floating controller. While a pointer is over the floating controller, the floating controller is continuously displayed, but when the pointer is moved off the floating controller, a period of time during which no user input of any type is tracked. If, while the pointer is off the toolbar, an idle period exceeds a predetermined threshold duration, then the floating controller is hidden. A set of images of a bounded sequence of images may be displayed on the floating controller. A visual indication that indicates whether a particular image in the set of images is either the first or last image in the bounded sequence may be displayed on each image of the set of images.

Abstract: Methods and systems for providing graphical user interfaces are described. To provide greater access and consolidation to frequently used items in the graphical user interface, a userbar is established which includes a plurality of item representations. To permit a greater number of items to reside in the userbar, a magnification function can be provided which magnifies items within the userbar when they are proximate the cursor associated with the graphical user interface.

Abstract: In one embodiment, the present invention is directed to a data structure for representing a spatial region. The data structure comprises a hierarchical arrangement of nodes associated with a plurality of refinement levels, wherein each node of the hierarchical arrangement of nodes is a regular spatial subdivision of the spatial region or another node that is associated with a preceding refinement level. The hierarchical arrangement of nodes forms a directed acyclic graph. The hierarchical arrangement of nodes comprises at least two nodes that have respective edges that are traversed to a common child node such that the hierarchical arrangement of nodes does not comprise a repeated pattern from any two nodes of a common refinement level of the data structure.

Abstract: A user interface having a persistent graphical interface element is disclosed. The element may have an appearance of a mechanical structure that traverses one or more displayed tracks. Movement along the tracks may be animated in response to navigation commands. Selectable menu panels may be included in the interface, and may overlay displayed contents of documents being viewed and/or edited to ensure that certain menu options are always available. The menu may be given multiple distinct appearances corresponding to different display sizes.

Abstract: A method for facilitating selection of an object on the display screen, an apparatus for implementing the method, and a program for causing a computer to function as the apparatus are provided. The method includes the steps of selecting a specific object on the display screen in response to a user input, extracting any of a plurality of objects displayed on the display screen that overlaps the selected specific object as a selection candidate by following a tree structure of the objects, and displaying a selection switching view including an element representing the selection candidate in the vicinity of the selected specific object.

Abstract: A method of providing a menu, and a multimedia device incorporating the same. In the multimedia device, the touchscreen is controlled to be activated and a menu that is selectable through a user touch is displayed on the touchscreen, when a user manipulation is input through a manipulating unit while the touchscreen is in an inactivated state. As a result, efficient arrangement of menus in the touchscreen is achieved.

Abstract: A method for creating avatar visual identifiers of contacts in an address book, including receiving contact information, which contact information corresponds to an entry in an address book, extracting contact parameters associated with the contact information, associating the contact parameters with avatar identification parameters, and creating an avatar visual identifier for the contact information using the avatar identification parameters, wherein the avatar visual identifier has a one-to-one mapping to the contact information is provided. A device thereof is also provided.

Abstract: The method for editing web data of the invention is applied to a web-editing system. The system receives a plurality of information via an internet. A user can use the system to edit the plurality of information. The method for editing web data comprises the following steps: displaying the plurality of information, a web-editing interface and a cursor, and when the cursor moves to one of the plurality of information, the one of the plurality of information appears with a selected effect; extracting the one of the plurality of information and showing on the web-editing interface when the user selects the one of the plurality of information; setting at least one parameter of the one of the plurality of information shown on the web-editing interface as editing information and displaying the editing information on the web-editing interface; converting the editing information to target editing information readable by an electronic device; and transferring the target editing information to the electronic device.

Abstract: An enhanced control, in which a guide line is defined relative to an object in a user interface, items aligned with the guide line are displayed without obscuring the object. A selected item is output based on receiving a selection of one of the displayed items.

Abstract: An interactive formatting tool enables a user to analyze and modify the formatting properties that have been applied to a text string. A user can invoke the formatting tool by displaying an Interactive Formatting Pane and then selecting a text string for analysis. The Interactive Formatting Pane will display all formatting properties applied to the text selection, including font properties, paragraph properties, and section properties. The Interactive Formatting Pane may also display table format properties, frame format properties, cell format properties and bullets and numbering format properties, if applicable. The user may then select a formatting category (e.g., font size) from the Interactive Formatting Pane and a format modification dialog will be displayed. The format modification dialog enables the user to modify the formatting properties associated with the selected formatting category. The Interactive Formatting Pane also includes a compare selection checkbox.

Abstract: A system and method for selectively displaying selection indication fields is described. A user may select multiple items using various selection indication fields. The fields may be displayed all the time or may only appear if a pointing device or cursor is near the field or an associated item.

Abstract: A method and an apparatus for selecting media files are provided. In the present invention, three keys are used for selecting a plurality of media files, wherein one of the keys is used for rotating and selecting a presently displayed media file, one of the keys is used for directly selecting the presently displayed media file, and another key is used for skipping the presently displayed media file. Complete select functions can be executed to a plurality of media files stored in any path by using foregoing three keys. The selected media files are stored in another path as being selected without spending time in actions such as moving, copying, and deleting, etc. Thus, the media file select operation is greatly simplified.

Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for displaying pixel images to provide visual-based emphasis in a graphical user interface. In one aspect of the invention, a method to display a pixel image for a Graphical User Interface (GUI) on a data processing system includes: detecting one or more outlines in a first image to generate a second image from pixel values of the first image that represents a GUI component; receiving input which indicates switching the GUI component from a first mode to a second mode; and displaying a combination of the first and second images to indicate that the GUI component is in the second mode. The combination of the first and second images shows an outlined version of the first image. In one example according to this aspect, the GUI component does not have keyboard focus in the first mode; and the GUI component has keyboard focus in the second mode.

Abstract: Methods, systems and computer readable media defining computer instructions for rendering a user interface (UI) are provided. The UI is defined for handling a widget that provides functionality to a displayable and executable mini-application. The widget includes a plurality of widget attributes, including a dock tile that is defined to display only selected ones of the plurality of widget attributes of the widget. Also provided is a widget dock to display and contain the dock tile on a display screen, and the dock tile is linked by a functional association to the widget. The widget dock provides access to launch the widget when selection of the dock tile is detected, so as to provide full interface with the plurality of widget attributes of the widget.

Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus (3) with a display, in which several items are high-lighted in a pattern (6) at the same time. The pattern of highlights may by moved in parallel by means of a navigation device (3), decreasing the number of steps to move in a matrix. Then one of the items may be selected by means of one or a few dedicated keys (7) or softkeys (8a, 8b).

Abstract: A system that includes a pop-up graphical user interface that includes menu bars overlapping marking menu zones. The interface pops up at the current position of the cursor when the space bar is held down. The menu bars are positioned around a central marking zone with the common menu bars located above the central zone and task specific menu bars located below the central zone. The common application menu bar is positioned outer most and the common window menu bar is located inner most. The menu bars are sized in a “stair-step” pattern and the commands therein are left and right justified to fill the menu bar evenly. The menu bar menu items are accessed just like menu bar items typically found at the top of windows. The menu bars mimic the menu bars that a user may need to use during tasks that users typically perform using the menu bars found in application windows.

Abstract: A system and method is provided to assist a user in selecting, identifying, and handling email messages. A selection color module may provide for the display of color coding and selection highlighting. The selection color module may provide a secondary highlighting color to indicate messages related to a selected message. A category navigation module may provide one or more of the following: an indicator that provides the user with a number of items that are off the screen for a particular category, a command that causes the first entry for a category to be scrolled into view, a label to indicate the number of items in a particular category matching a particular criteria, and/or a control for scrolling between next or previous categories.

Abstract: A method, program and system for displaying the consequence of an input in a graphical user interface (GUI) are provided. The invention comprises displaying a GUI including a plurality of interaction control mechanisms (controls) having a selected or a deselected state. An input to a first control may cause a change in state to at least one other of the plurality of controls. Responsive to a first input at the first control (e.g., holding down a mouse button with the pointer on the first control), the invention displays a preview of the change in state of the plurality of controls that would occur if a second input is made at the first control (e.g., releasing the mouse button with the pointer still on the first control). If the user does not want the previewed change in state to occur, the user has simply to avoid making the second input (e.g., move the pointer off the first control before releasing the mouse button).

Abstract: Validating a color that is selected in an authoring environment for display in a destination media environment includes selecting a color for an application, converting the values of the color to those in a fundamental color space, and converting the values from the fundamental color space to those in a color space corresponding to the destination media environment. Validity of the selected color in the destination media environment depends on the component values in the destination media environment being within an acceptable range of values.

Abstract: A software method and/or system is provided which may enable a user to handle multiple application windows The user may use this tool to configure and save multiple window views. A user selection interface permits the user to choose a window view among saved view arrangements and, in response the system automatically adjusts the windows' positions and sizes.

Abstract: Validating a color that is selected in an authoring environment for display in a destination media environment includes selecting a color for an application, converting the values of the color to those in a fundamental color space, and converting the values from the fundamental color space to those in a color space corresponding to the destination media environment. Validity of the selected color in the destination media environment depends on the component values in the destination media environment being within an acceptable range of values.

Abstract: The presentation of information in HTML files is desirably en hanced by the use of one or more separate scripting Javascript™ files, referenced from the HTML file, which uses information presented as variables in the HTML file. In this manner, a high degree of formatting flexibility can be achieved, while reducing the likelihood of errors in the HTML pages, improving ease of site maintenance, and standardising the “look and feel” of the site. Improvements in the network bandwidth required to browse sites organised in this manner can also be achieved in favourable instances.

Abstract: A system and method for facilitating user entry of a manually-adjustable data setting in an aircraft cockpit normally presents an image of the data setting on the display at a predetermined size. When the user commences to manipulate a control for manually adjusting the data setting, the imaged data setting on the display is automatically enlarged to a predeterminately enlarged size to thereby unambiguously direct the user's attention to the imaged data setting to be adjusted. The imaged data setting on the display is returned from its enlarged size to its normal size when user manipulation of the control has ceased, preferably a predetermined time interval after such user manipulation has ceased.

Abstract: A user is enabled to select multiple objects in a document which is opened in an editor and contains selectable objects by presenting each of the objects as an entry of plurality of entries in a separate window, allowing the user to select multiple entries; and selecting multiple objects corresponding to the selected multiple entries in the editor based on the entries selected by the user. An Assistive Technology application may be called to provide related information and selection state of the operated object based on a user's operation on any one of the entries. The multiple objects can be selected in the document with a keyboard to help disabled users, such as low vision users or blind users.

Abstract: A graphical user interface is provided which allows the user to perform numerous operations suitable for analysis of in-vivo images within a single display screen or a single window. Using the the-vivo GUI, the user may create and manipulate analysis tools such as rectangle and ellipse tools to define regions of interest and perform various measurements on an in-vivo image. In addition, the GUI allows the user to store measurement results in a dated electronic notebook, display testing information, manipulate image presentation and print while maintaining view of the image.

Abstract: A lasso select tool that allows a user to draw a flexible line of selection ink in order to select one or more graphical objects for manipulation. As the user draws this selection line, the lasso select tool continuously redraws and displays a connection line connecting one end of the selection line with the opposite end of the selection line. This connection line thus graphically demonstrates to the user the area that is presently encompassed by the resulting lasso enclosure. Further, the lasso select tool will change the appearance of any object selected with the lasso enclosure. The lasso select tool also selects objects that are only substantially encompassed by the lasso enclosure. For example, the lasso select tool may select ink objects that are only 60% or more encompassed by the lasso enclosure.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method of providing information for a web notebook is disclosed. The method can include displaying a web document in a content area of a browser window, receiving a user selection of content from the document initiated by a first user mouse click, and displaying a selection icon in the content area upon completion of the user selection, wherein the selection icon is displayed without the need for a second user mouse click.

Abstract: An object of this invention is to process image data in which a plurality of link destinations are set in one region. Another object of this invention is to allow the user intuitively to recognize the setup states of links, since link regions have different display patterns in correspondence with the numbers of link destinations upon displaying the link regions. If the designated link region has only one link destination, a dotted circle (for example) is displayed on the link region (S407). If the designated link region has two link destinations, a solid circle (for example) is displayed (step S409). If the designated link region has three or more link destinations, a double circle (for example) is displayed (step S408). Again, if the designated link region has only one link destination, an image at the link destination is set as display data (S421), while if the designated link region has a plurality of link destinations, all the link destinations may be displayed in a list (S415).

Abstract: A message analysis device is described including a storage device, display device, and a selection device. The storage device can be used to store messages in a file in chronological order, and the a display device can be used to display at least one first and one second window. One part of the messages, which are chronologically stored in the file, can be displayed in the first window. The selection device can be used to select at least one message to be displayed in the second window, corresponding to a parent and/or child generation of a specific message. Accordingly, information can be evaluated from a message header to determine and represent those parent-generation messages that causally triggered a specific message and/or those child-generation messages that are causally determined by the specific message.

Abstract: Images displayed on a display device are animated to reflect a user's selection of the images. According to one embodiment, the displayed images include keyboard characters that are selected when the user touches the display at the locations of the display where the images are shown. Selection of the displayed images can also be made through any combination of audio, optical, mechanical and electrical input devices. A plurality of selected images can also be animated simultaneously and by varying degree to reflect a sequence in which the images were selected by the user.

A command display unit controls an initial screen display, an execution process display unit controls the screen display during operation, and a command execution unit executes the process in accordance with the operation (time), on the basis of the information that is registered in advance.

Abstract: A system and a method are described for providing a graphical user interface display with a conspicuous image element. In one example, a particular image element is first identified. Predetermined rules are then applied to ensure that the particular image element in a first window in a displayable image has a unique user visible display attribute absent from other image elements in the first window. Predetermined rules are also applied to ensure that the unique display attribute is absent from other image elements in any other window concurrently displayed in the displayed image. The particular image element is then enabled to be responsive to user selection.

Abstract: A graphical user interface which can aid in the selection of, and the confirmation of the selection of, a plurality of selectable controls, represented as selectable bitmaps, which are closely displayed together. A graphical user interface includes a graphical representation in bitmap format of a plurality of selectable bitmap portions. At least one designated group of the plurality of selectable bitmap portions is corresponded to a single drop-down or combo box. An indicator can select one selectable bitmap portion from the plurality of selectable bitmap portions of the designated group. An indication is then provided in the drop-down or combo box of the selected bitmap portion when the selected bitmap portion is part of the designated group. The indication in the drop-down or combo box is also changed as a selected bitmap portion changes within the designated group.

Abstract: When a touch pad pointing device is tapped, the tapped position coordinate is detected and a predetermined function is performed based on the tapped coordinate. One of functions of a computer and a pointing function is allocated to a zone of the touch pad. When a zone of the touch pad is tapped, a notification based on the function allocated to the tapped zone is performed.

Abstract: In a method for altering a protocol in a magnetic resonance apparatus a first parameter for the protocol and a second parameter for the protocol are displayed in a user interface display presentation. In this display presentation, a range of values for the first parameter is shown, including designation of a first sub-range within the range wherein selection of a value for the first parameter does not modify the second parameter, and designation of a second sub-range wherein selection of a value for the first parameter causes modification of the second parameter. If a value for the first parameter is selected in the second sub-range, the display presentation automatically shows how the value selected for the first parameter will modify the second parameter. The user is given an option, via the user interface to confirm selection of the value for the first parameter, or to reject it.

Abstract: A method, system, and computer-readable medium for allowing easier access to the Web pages of a Web site is provided. A requested Web page that includes a menu is downloaded along with a first executable component comprising display instructions assigned the Web site. A second executable component is also downloaded with the Web page for creating a data structure in memory having a tree-like structure and including the titles of the Web site's Web pages and links to the titled Web pages. A portion of a cascading menu is generated based on the executable component and the data structure when a corresponding portion of the menu is selected. The executable components are automatically updated, if it is determined that more current versions exist.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for launching applications on a computer. A launcher allows a user to quickly determine which applications are installed and to start one or more selected applications. The launcher accesses an operating system registry to determine which applications are installed and where each application is installed. The launcher presents information in a file formatted using a scripted language such as hypertext markup language (HTML), so that the file can be read by a standard web browser application, such as the well-known Netscape Navigator™ or Microsoft Internet Explorer™. Thus, a user is presented with a standard graphical user interface that he or she most likely knows. The user makes the selection by clicking with his or her mouse. The display may simply list the installed applications, or it may list all known applications, showing unavailable applications with a different visual attribute than installed applications, for example, dimmed or grayed out text.

Abstract: A display operating system which can freely set numbers of rows and columns in an arrangement of selection buttons displayed on a monitoring screen with immediate selection of a desired selection button being made possible. A position corresponding to that of a fingertip interrupting two of a plurality of light beams projected in a lattice on a panel of a controller at an intersection thereof is set as a first-touch position, on the basis of which an active area is established. This makes, of a plurality of selection buttons, selection buttons in the active area become selectable. Further, when the active area is changed by changing the first-touch position with a change in fingertip position to change light beams that are interrupted, selection buttons in the changed active area become selectable.

Abstract: A system, method, and medium for enhancing a GUI and viewing environment for a computer user is disclosed. Enabling a user to fully navigate and operate a computer through the use of a remote control device, the present invention includes at least a PC mode of operation and a theater mode of operation, wherein the theater mode is designed for distance use with the remote device. While operating in theater mode, received function key signals are interpreted by the computer system to operate various functions which have been modified to accommodate remote viewing and control. To enable the remote device to fully control the applications executable on the computer, the disclosed process notifies the various applications of the current operating mode.

Abstract: A system enables a user to select one of a plurality of user selectable options in a processor-based system. In one embodiment of the present invention, the selections may be made using a wireless remote control unit. Each of a plurality of graphical user interfaces may be selectively, sequentially indicated or highlighted for a period of time sufficient to enable the user to input an indication that the user wishes to select the indicated graphical user interface. When the user makes an input during the period when a particular option is highlighted, that option is automatically selected.
