Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for presenting a data input interface. In one exemplary embodiment of a method described herein, a text input field is displayed and, through a first input to the text input field itself, a selection between at least a first operation and a second operation can be made. A first input is received to determine a selected operation which is one of the first operation or the second operation, and a text input is received and the selected operation is performed. Other methods are described, and apparatuses are also described.

Abstract: Movement of a pointer or a window on a display of a personal computer, mobile telephone or digital television set, which allows an object to be selected, is controlled using an orthogonal set of keys. Motion of the pointer or window closely resembles the behaviour of a body of fixed mass obeying Newton's second law of motion. Movement of the pointer may used to predict which object the user wishes to select. Once a prediction has been made, the object is marked and the user may select the marked object, although the user need not act on the prediction.

Abstract: An image processing apparatus includes: face detection means for detecting a subject face contained in each of images continuously captured by capturing means and extracting attribute information on each detected face; score determination means for determining a score for each of the continuously captured images on the basis of the attribute information on the detected face extracted by the face detection means; and representative image selection means for selecting a representative image from the continuously captured images on the basis of the score determined by the score determination means.

Abstract: A system and method graphically displays similar or disparate forms of information for the purpose of sorting, searching, organizing, accessing, and using the information that contains a revolving carousel, limits the amount of information displayed by a subset setting, and having sorting commands directly accessible to the user through a remote control or other input device. The carousel design allows the user to easily see the information that is of interest and navigate to the information using commands to spin the carousel right or left, or use the sort, sub-sort, search, or text skip ahead commands. The graphical nature and intuitive operation enables the user to quickly learn, navigate, find, access, or act on the information that they are looking for.

Abstract: A method and system for providing an easily recognizable visual feedback to a user in a multi-parameter aircraft instrument display, such as a flat panel display, of manually induced variations in individually selected manually adjustable data associated with a selected one of a plurality of displayable parameters in a simultaneous display of these parameters. The method and system provides visual confirmation of the parameter being manually varied in response to such manual variations by enlarging the display of the selected parameter, such as by zooming out the displayed image of the selected parameter to between two and four times its normal size in response to the manual variation of this parameter, and returns the image size to its original size, such as by zooming in, in response to a cessation in the manual adjustments by the user of the associated dimensional data, such as within a predetermined interval after such cessation, such as two to four seconds thereafter.

Abstract: A method for enabling access to a history of previously accessed data items includes (a) providing a floating hierarchical menu of navigation history which may alternatively be located at any portion of a main window including a hierarchical tree displaying a plurality of previously accessed data items in response to a first user input, and (b) providing for a second user input to select the hierarchical level of nodes displayed, wherein each such data item is displayed as a node of the tree and each such node may be selected to retrieve the previously accessed data item.

Abstract: The menu display device of the present invention includes: a display section 182 configured to display selectable menu items in a plurality of lines; a menu item selector 184 configured to select one of the menu items; and a control section 170 configured to execute a control so that when the menu item is selected by the menu item selector 184, the plurality of lines are displayed overlapped with each other and the line including the selected menu item is displayed at a forefront, and a selection item corresponding to the selected menu item is displayed under the selected menu item.

User input is received to activate the multi-button menu icon and to identify a first button of the multi-button menu icon associated with a location of the user input. A group of application icons, associated with the identified first button of the multi-button menu icon, is displayed. A second button of the multi-button menu icon is identified based on a changed location of the user input, and a different group of application icons associated with the identified second button are displayed. The multi-button menu icon is deactivated upon removal of the user input, allowing one of the application icons to be selected with a second user input.

Abstract: A method for providing a graphical user interface (GUI) and an electronic device using the method are provided. The method includes forming one or more groups of GUI items other than a GUI item selected by a user, moving the GUI items in the one or more groups, and enlarging and displaying the selected item on an area formed by movement of the GUI items. Therefore, it is possible to provide a GUI which enables easy manipulation and which is displayed with superior visual effect on a screen that is relatively small in size.

Abstract: A mobile terminal equipped with a flexible first display module and a second display module capable of receiving a touch input and a method of controlling the mobile terminal are provided. The method includes displaying an operating screen on the first display module and displaying an operation control menu on the second display module; determining whether the first display module is bent or folded; and choosing one of a plurality of menu items of the operation control menu corresponding to a bent or folded portion of the first display module. Abstract: A method of facilitating the browsing of a plurality of result sets by a user. Abstract: Optical storage media often contain data structures for a menu suitable for selection of a title, a chapter, a parameter or others. Such menus usually comprise a number of buttons to be displayed, with each button having a state. Possible states of buttons are “unselected”, “selected” or “activated”. According to the invention, the representation of a menu button may vary, depending on its state. An image or an image sequence, e.g. cartoon, may be associated to a buttons state, providing user animation. Further, a sound or sound sequence, e.g. melody or click, may be associated to a buttons state, and may be played back when the button enters this state. A data structure is disclosed which allows storage of such menu data e.g. on a Blu-ray disc.

Abstract: A user interacts with content received from a remote server; content (e.g. feeds from social networking sites, advertisements) is received over a wireless network at a mobile telephone, which then automatically displays a specific item of the content on the mobile telephone, without the user explicitly requesting the display of that specific item of content. In response to the user selecting or highlighting the displayed specific item of content, the mobile telephone lists multiple options that, if individually selected, each initiate an associated action that corresponds to a particular way of responding to or interacting with the specific item of content.

Abstract: A user interface system and process for graphically displaying the results of a standard search, such as a database search, to a user on a display device via an interactive search results window in which the user views and filters search results items. These results can be presented in either a cluster or histogram format, or both. This allows the user to visualize the results graphically, rather than just displaying a list of the items found. In addition the presentation of the search results can be graphically manipulated to easily filter the results as desired by the user.

Abstract: Several elements are displayed on a computer display. The user is provided with a haptic device, for moving a cursor over the display. Distances between the cursor and the various elements are computed; the element with the smallest distance is highlighted on the display. When the user moves the haptic device, the identified element is changed, according to the distance between the cursor and the various elements. The user selects the identified element by actuating a select button. The invention makes it possible for the user to select one of the displayed elements, without having to move the cursor over the element to be selected. No prior knowledge of the shape of the elements is required for carrying out the selection process.

Abstract: Techniques that enable content from a web page to be shared directly with one or more targets, which may be an application, a buddy from a buddy list (e.g., in a chat application), and the like. An embodiment of the present invention can identify contents on a web page that are to be made sharable and make the identified contents sharable. The content that is made sharable can then be shared with a share target using, for example, drag and drop operations. For example, a user may select sharable content on a web page, drag the content to a target, and drop it directly on the target thereby sharing the content with the target.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method and system for use in a computing environment for representing files stored in stacks. The method includes providing a set of stack icons, each icon in the set having a stack height representing a range of stack sizes. The method additionally includes determining a stack size for a selected stack and selecting and displaying an appropriate stack icon from the set of stack icons based on the determined stack size. The selected stack may be stored within one of multiple libraries. Accordingly a distinct set of icons relevant to each library may be stored for each library. Abstract: A mapping system uses aerial photographs to correct geocode data for street addresses. After entering an address, a street map is displayed along with an aerial photo, both of which indicate the street address location based on standard algorithms. The indicator on the aerial map can be moved to accurately align with the location of the entered street address, which corrects the geocode data, allowing further geographical analysis to be performed using the corrected geocode data. The corrected geocode data can be used to more accurately determine distances from the property at the street address to natural hazards such as, coastlines, earthquake faults and flood zones.

Abstract: An electronic program guide (EPG) having a spotlight effect to focus a user's attention upon a selectable item. The EPG includes a user interface screen for providing a plurality of television programs by time and channel in a grid format. Each television program becomes selectable from the EPG based upon user interaction. The spotlight effect is depicted in association with each television program when it becomes selectable as a result of user interaction. The spotlight effect is defined by non-uniform color which at least partially surrounds and extends from the selectable television program.

Abstract: An electronic book having various features for manipulating text or other information. The subscriber may highlight, cut and paste, copy and paste, and annotate information within an electronic book. A multiple page view feature permits the subscriber to simultaneously view any plurality of pages of an electronic book, and a multiple screen feature permits the subscriber to view one or more pages on a viewer having multiple screens. A picture-in-picture feature permits the subscriber to simultaneously view a page of an electronic book along with other content, such as a television program or information from another electronic book. The picture-in-picture feature may display an electronic book page as a main image wrapped around an inset image.

Abstract: A method for providing a transient electronic dictionary that travels with an original electronic document is provided. An author of an electronic document may generate a transient electronic dictionary that is linked with the original electronic document such that the transient electronic dictionary is transmitted along with the original electronic document when the original electronic document is distributed. At a recipient computer system, when the original electronic document is accessed, the associated transient electronic dictionary is loaded by the word processing application. The loaded transient electronic dictionary is used to expand the permanent electronic dictionary present in the recipient computer system temporarily. The word processing application may then resolve words in the original electronic document using the loaded transient electronic dictionary entries.

Abstract: An image forming apparatus includes a display unit, a plurality of types of input units, an input unit recognizing unit that recognizes a type of input unit via which input is being performed, and a display control unit. If a function menu has been selected of the first screen via the input unit, the display control unit displays a second screen, on the display unit, for selecting an item in the function menu selected on the first screen. Abstract: To improve ease of operation with which a user selects an image when many images are simultaneously displayed on a screen, a frame, which divides many images into 12 areas, is superimposed and displayed on a screen displaying thumbnail exhibition thereon. For example, the press of a channel key allows selecting one of the areas and moving to the selected area a focus frame indicating a candidate image for selection, and then the presses of cursor keys allow moving the focus frame to a desired image to be selected. The number of areas can be changed and displayed according to the number of channel keys when a television remote control is used, or according to the number of numeric keys when a mobile telephone is used.

Abstract: A consistent method of navigating across large data sets, particularly search results from search engines and play lists from media player devices is disclosed. Persistent navigation position markers provide the user with indication of current position in the data set. By using a click wheel which is provided on many mobile communication platforms, personal digital assistants and the like, simple operation is provided. Alternatively, a touch pad, touch screen and stylus, or thumb mouse may be used.

Abstract: A technique to navigate through one or more menus of a handheld computer is disclosed. In one embodiment, the technique uses a handheld device having a first button to cause a cursor to navigate through a plurality of menu items and to highlight a desired menu item. The device also has a second button to cause the cursor to navigate through a plurality of menus when the cursor is highlighting one of the menus or a first menu item, and to cause the cursor to highlight a previous menu item when the cursor is highlighting a menu item other than the first menu item.

Abstract: The present invention advantageously provides a method for interfacing an access control system and an input device, comprising the steps of displaying, on the input device, a set of choices from a plurality of choices, receiving one choice, and modifying the displayed set of choices based on the one choice, wherein modifying is performed by a heuristic method and/or a usage-based method. The heuristic method determines if one choice is a request for additional information, and, if it is, modifies the choices to include the additional information, and to exclude advanced and typical choices; and, if not, modifies the choices to include the advanced and typical choices. Abstract: An apparatus and system for transforming a web page for display on a mobile device is described. In one embodiment, a graphical representation of a document object model associated with a URL is displayed. Selections of at least one element of the document object model are stored as a content filter. A request for a resource associated with the content filter is processed by extracting portions of the resource according to the content filter. The extracted portions are provided to a client.

Abstract: A device for managing image and audio files displays thumbnails, which are representative of the files, on a screen in different arrangements, depending on the selected layout and order. When the user enters input to indicates that he or she wishes to browse through the thumbnails, the thumbnails move across the screen in sequence, following a path through a focus outline in the center of the screen. The path followed by the thumbnails depends on the selected layout.
