Patent number: 5365764Abstract: In a rolling mill comprising upper and lower work rolls crossed each other to perform strip crown control, a straight line connecting the center of an operation side screwdown screw and the center of a drive side screwdown screw is inclined relative to a line perpendicular to the rolling direction. A cross angle .theta. to be controlled is changed in opposite plus and minus directions about the straight line connecting both the screwdown centers. A large extent of strip crown control can be achieved with a smaller cross deviation than usual in the prior art, thereby permitting omission of an equalizer beam. Further, change in the extent by which strip crown is varied upon control with respect to the cross angle becomes substantially linear and hence control is more easily conducted. Since the cross angle 2.theta. between the two work rolls is larger than 2.degree., the transition temperature is not changed and uniformity in quality can be ensured.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 1992Date of Patent: November 22, 1994Assignee: Hitachi, Ltd.Inventors: Toshiyuki Kajiwara, Tsuneo Ochiai, Hidetoshi Nishi

Patent number: 4872245Abstract: A cold-rolled strip manufacturing apparatus, in which a continuous cold reduction mill and a continuous annealing furnace are directly linked together, has a tension-leveller-type scale breaker for elongating hot-rolled breakdown by 2 to 7 percent, a scale scrubbing brush unit and an immersion-type continuous pickling tank installed upstream of the continuous cold reduction mill.Descaling of the hot-rolled strip coil is carried out by breaking the mill scale formed on its surface by causing the running strip to elongate and then the broken scale is removed from the surface. The percent elongation given to the strip is feedforward controlled on the basis of the manufacturing conditions of the hot-rolled strip coil and/or the properties and quantity of the mill scale formed. In another descaling method, the percent elongation given to the strip is feedback controlled on the basis of the condition of scale breaking and removing that is detected during the period in which the mill scale is broken and removed.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 1988Date of Patent: October 10, 1989Assignee: Nippon Steel CorporationInventors: Yoshiki Kawasaki, Yoshihiro Hioki, Yuichi Ohno, Kozaburo Ichida, Susumu Yamaguchi, Michitaka Sudo, Bunichiro Chikazawa

Patent number: 4860426Abstract: A hot profile-steel workpiece having a flange width dimension, a web height dimension, and a web thickness dimension is rolled in a roll train including a reversible univerial rolling stand and a flange-compacting roll stand unstream therefrom. According to the invention one of the height, width, or thickness dimensions of the incoming workpiece is reduced upstream of the flange-engaging compacting roll stand. Normally the web height dimension is reduced in a roll stand immediately upstream of the universal and flange-compacting stands. Furthermore the workpiece has a web with extra-thick parts and these extra-thick parts are rolled out by horizontal rolls of a roll stand that engage this web. The flange-compacting roll stand engages the faces of the flanges. With this system it is possible to make the web of the incoming workpiece either shorter or taller, that is it can either be compacted or rolled out.Type: GrantFiled: October 27, 1987Date of Patent: August 29, 1989Assignee: SMS Schloemann-Siemag AktiengesellschaftInventors: Georg Engel, Dietmar Kosak

Patent number: 4840051Abstract: A series of thermomechanical workings such as temperature-controlled torsional strains are applied to a specimen of steel at strain and temperature levels and interpass times selected to simulate rolling mill conditions. The measured stress values are compared with the temperatures of the steel during the working periods during which the respective values were obtained. Thermomechanical working schedules are repeated at selected varying starting and terminating temperatures thereby to obtain a series of possible rolling schedules. These simulations are selected so that a varying number of reduction passes in the sequence occur at steel temperatures below temperature A.sub.r3. The value of a selected parameter of the worked steel, e.g. yield strength, is measured at ambient temperature.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 1987Date of Patent: June 20, 1989Assignee: Ipsco Inc.Inventors: Francisco Boratto, Stephen Yue, John J. Patent number: 4831854Abstract: The rolling mill for mechanical descaling of hot rolled steel is constructed according to the slidable roll process with reducing rolls so that a unform operation with different and/or changing shape steel strips can obtained. This is attained when the rolling mill has at least two rolls slidable in opposite directions whose body surfaces are constructed with S-shape contours positioned inversely to each other so that these contours compliment each other flawlessly in one certain axial relative position. When sliding the rolls in opposite directions in one case the contour is decreased in the center region of the steel strip and when slid in the opposite directions in the other case the contour is increased in the center region. Thus the rolls can be adjusted to fit a gently convex steel strip profile by axially sliding the rolls in opposite directions as also rolled strips with a thickness centrally reduced in comparison to that of the edge regions can by appropriate sliding of the rolls opposite each other.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 1987Date of Patent: May 23, 1989Assignee: SMS Schloemann-Siemag AktiengesellschaftInventors: Wilfried Bald, Karl-Ernst Boucke, Hans Rommen, Manfred Fritz, Friedrich Hollmann
