  • Publication number: 20090205397
Abstract: A quick change tool for use in die casting. The tool includes a pair of frame plates permanently bolted into a die casting machine. A first frame plate bolted to an upper platen of the machine and a second frame plate bolted to the lower platen. Each frame or plate can include a plurality of slotted rails that form a slotted rectangular periphery groove adapted to accept a standard size periphery ear attached to an existing die. This allows a die casting operation to retrofit old dies to fit the system while also making new dies to fit. The system allows for dies to be quickly slid out of a casting machine substantially reducing set up time in a die casting operation while still allowing for a precise relocation of the dies at each change over.

  • Publication number: 20090049884
Abstract: The forming recesses of a lower die and an upper die are formed to have a semi-oval profile so as to provide a forming space almost oval in section with the dies closed. The parting line between the lower die and the upper die is deviated as much as h from the major axis of the forming space toward the upper die side, and the opening width of the forming recess of the lower die is set to be slightly larger than the opening width of the forming recess of the upper die. A metal bent tube is plastic-deformed into an almost oval shape in section by closing the dies while being compressed in a peripheral direction by the lower and upper dies to eliminate spring-back caused by bending, whereby the buckling and pinching toward the outer side of the tube wall is prevented by the expanded portion of the lower die and buckling toward the inner side of the tube wall is prevented by a step difference formed by the difference in opening width between the lower die and the upper die.

Abstract: A mold which comprises a pair of mating, openable and closeable mold halves and a lock to hold the mold halves together. The lock is defined by a recess in the outer surface of one of the mold halves. A lifting bridge crosses the recess, being proportioned to permit a lifting hook in the recess to pass underneath to engage the bridge. An elongated member is secured to the other of the mold halves, being slidably extendable into the recess when the mold halves are substantially closed. The elongated member defines a longitudinal slot facing outwardly of the recess in closed position to receive at least a portion of the lifting hook as the hook engages the bridge. The slot defines an end opposed to the other mold half which is closed, to prevent a hook portion in the slot from sliding past the opposed end. Thus, the mold in closed position cannot be opened while the lifting hook is present in the slot.

By this invention, rotation of the lifting handle from the first to the second position is prevented when the mold halves are separated along the parting line by more than a predetermined distance. Thus the mold cannot be lifted, since the handle cannot be rotated into outwardly extending position to receive the hook until the mold is closed. Abstract: A forging press and method of forging to enable workpieces of exceptionally large diameter to be forged. The invention is an improvement over a press and method disclosed in an earlier patent in which a rectangular set of top dies is used with a circular set of bottom dies, and the bottom dies are indexed through a pattern of arcs to move a workpiece successively to positions in which it is forged throughout its area. The present invention utilizes a set of bottom dies which is of larger diameter than that of the indexing means and has overhanging edge portions. These portions are additionally supported at diametrically opposed locations where the force of the top dies is absorbed.

Abstract: A generally cylindrical, vertically vibrating peening tool has an integral, small diameter, cylindrical pilot at its lower end, adjoining a larger upper body portion of said tool at an annular juncture area having an outwardly concave surface at all circumferential points therearound. Supported below said peening tool is a resiliently yieldable anvil having a cylindrical top opening receptive of said pilot with a close sliding fit. The top of the anvil is flat and supports a workpiece between the tool and the anvil with a hole in the workpiece aligned with said pilot, enabling the latter to extend through said hole and into the anvil's said top opening. The workpiece is shiftable horizontally upon the anvil to enable all portions of the upper edge of said hole to be brought into peening, deburring engagement with said concave juncture area of the peening tool.

Abstract: Surgical needles are attached to sutures with controlled pull-out characteristics by a short crimp--that is a crimp whose length is markedly less than the length of the end of the suture in the needle; with an essentially undistorted portion of the needle adjacent to where the suture emerges from the needle, and an essentially undistorted portion around the front of the suture, so that only a short section of the needle is crimped around the suture. This leaves the suture uncrushed where it emerges from the needle and hence of superior strength where sharp bends occur during use. It also leaves an undistorted portion of the suture ahead of the crimp so that on pull-out, the suture is retained not only by frictional engagement of the crimp but also by the forces required for the distortion of the head of the suture so that it will pull through the reduced section of the crimp.

Abstract: The wall of a thin walled hollow member such as the ferrule portion of an electrical terminal or the like is subjected to a longitudinal pinching force which may be applied by one or more pair of spaced parallel elongate forming surfaces at selective locations along the length of the perimeter of the thin walled member to produce one or more obliquely angled double thickness fins which are then subjected to an inwardly directed radial force causing the fins to be folded back against the outer surface of the hollow member which is thus tightly contracted about a further member located within the hollow member.

  • Patent number: 4015461
Abstract: The present drop-forging die includes an upper and a lower die member which re pressed together in the forging operation to form a closed cavity of the shape of the finished workpiece without a flash gutter at the interface of the die members. The die is constructed in a manner to force the heated material of the blank to follow a predetermined flow pattern whereby to completely fill the different spaces within the die cavity in a fixed sequence before the material is cooled off enough to cause fabrication defects. More specifically, the material is forced to first flow downwardly to fill a recess in the bottom of the lower die member. Thereafter the cavity elements of the upper die member are filled by a material flow in the opposite direction. For this purpose the blank rests on a narrow annular surface around its bottom edge portion and is mostly unsupported in its center portion above said recess.
