  • Patent number: 4249408
Abstract: This invention provides a method for cold extruding 18% nickel maraging steel to form an article of manufacture, such as a sub projectile blank for the manufacture of cannon rounds which includes performing a series of cold extrusion operations on an extrusion blank with a tapered punch to produce a combination forward extrusion and backward extrusion. On the first cold extrusion operation a tapered hole is formed in the extrusion blank and the extrusion blank is elongated. Subsequent cold extrusion operations progressively elongate both the extrusion blank and the tapered hole. The punch and die geometry are such that the tapered hole is elongated by penetration of the punch into the blank and additionally backward extrusion of the material around the punch. Additionally, as the tapered hole becomes increasingly longer, a floating punch is employed wherein at least a portion of the punch is supported by the walls of the tapered hole.

  • Patent number: 4227396
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a contoured die wherein a workpiece is formed with depressions extending across the top surface of the workpiece from front to back thereof. The depressions are formed spaced apart from one another to retain flat top surface portions therebetween. Smoothly contoured edge surfaces are then formed on the workpiece in the regions of intersection of the top surface with the front and back surfaces, to produce a die with ridge projections surrounded by top surface portions having a concave elevational contour as viewed in a vertical plane perpendicular to the side surfaces of the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 4193286
Abstract: A tool for straightening a bent control arm in an automotive vehicle suspion system: said tool comprising a first presser element slidably positionable on the control arm shaft, a second presser element affixable to an end of the control arm pivot shaft, and screw-nut means for drawing the first presser element toward the second presser element to thereby effect a straightening action on the bent area of the control arm. A power wrench is the preferred instrumentality for advancing the nut along the screw.

  • Patent number: 4168839
Abstract: An improved tool for installing captive type spark plug gaskets upon a spark plug body characterized in the provision of a staking member which contacts the inwardly directed locking flange of a gasket in such manner as to form undulations in the plane thereof to provide the equivalent of metal thickness which is appreciably thicker than the original thickness of metal stock from which the gasket is formed. During a staking operation, the inwardly directed flange is further inwardly folded to reduce the effective diameter of the free edge portion thereof, so as to be positioned to lie upon the unthreaded undercut area adjacent the lower transverse surface of the plug body. Because of the effective increased thickness of the free edge of the inwardly folded flange, cross threading with respect to the thread of the shank does not occur when the plug is unthreaded from an engaged cylinder head opening, and the gasket remains captive on removal.

  • Patent number: 4065955
Abstract: A felting needle, with thousands of its counterparts, must be identically reproducible and uniform so that consistent duplication of the finished product of felted material is possible. The method of the present invention, as well as the apparatus of this invention for practicing the method, have the capability, for the first time, of exact duplication of a felting-needle barb, with rounded contours on all faces and edges which contact the fibers, and with uniform size, shape and finish, all produced by a method which is essentially a one-step process reducing the number of steps of the manufacturing procedure to a minimum. Thus the apparatus and process provide a barb-forming tool which has a recess or cavity formed therein which is the exact mirror image or mating counterpart of the shape or outline of the barb and barb-recess to be formed in the needle, and which, with such contour-controlling and material-constraining cavity, produces an exact cavity, throat and barb each time the tool strikes the needle.

  • Patent number: 3977229
Abstract: An anvil for a blind riveting tool for locking the plugs of self-plugging blind rivets. The anvil has a central aperture (11), an annular abutment face (13) peripherally of the aperture (11) and a rim (14) radially inwardly of the abutment face (13) and peripherally of the aperture (11). The rim (14) projects forwardly of the abutment face (13) and has a forward end face (16) which is inclined rearwardly and outwardly and provided with generally concave recesses (15) which extend radially across the end face (16) and divide it into a plurality of lands (20) which during placing of a rivet operate to swage part of the mandrel of the rivet into locking engagement with the shell of the rivet.

  • Patent number: 3946584
Abstract: A hydrostatic extrusion method and apparatus for the extrusion of tubes is disclosed wherein the simplified structure of the nose or tip portion of the billet and the cooperating surfaces of the die defining the die cavity and those of the mandrel facilitate an improved initial sealing among the associated surfaces of the die, billet and mandrel. Such an initial sealing is effected between such interfaces of the members and billet at a point which is located substantially rearwardly from the position at which the actual extrusion to the final tubular configuration occurs between the bearing portion of the die and the cooperating sizing portion of the mandrel. Such structure and method permits the extrusion of tubes having walls of asymmetric or non-circular configurations in cross section, even those of complex configurations.
