  • Patent number: 7981099
Abstract: A high performance flatus gas filter assembly, and a body waste collection pouch with which it may be used, along with a method for making such an assembly, are disclosed. The assembly includes a filter pad having first and second layers of deodorizing filter media with an imperforate gas and odor barrier layer sandwiched therebetween for blocking the direct flow of gases between the opposing inner faces of the filter layers. An envelope of liquid and gas impermeable material defines a chamber for enclosing the pad. The envelope has walls with first and second openings communicating with central portions of the first and second filter layers, and defines a peripheral space about the pad to permit the outward flow of flatus gases from the peripheral edge surface of one of the filter layers inwardly into the peripheral edge surface of the other of the filter layers.

  • Patent number: 7976619
Abstract: An air cleaner assembly and an air induction system for an internal combustion engine. The air cleaner assembly preferably is formed using first and second housing members that are assembled to define an interior volume. A hydrocarbon adsorber is located within air induction system, e.g., within the interior volume of the air cleaner assembly. The hydrocarbon adsorber is positioned outside of the main air flow within a recess formed in a wall of one of the housing members. A purge channel is formed in the interior wall that houses the hydrocarbon adsorber. Air flow through the air induction system passes via the purge channel through the hydrocarbon adsorber. By facilitating air flow through the hydrocarbon adsorber that is positioned outside of the main airflow, the hydrocarbon adsorber is self-regenerating and does not have to be replaced over the lifetime of the vehicle as a result of hydrocarbon build-up.

Abstract: The invention relates to compositions that can be used to adsorb low concentration, preferably, for example less than 15 ppm, of unwanted or target substances. Typically the absorbance can be from an enclosed vapor phase. Such absorbency is accomplished in a contained substantially enclosed gaseous volume or atmosphere using a composition comprising a cyclodextrin compound and a polyethylenimine that can have an absorbency capability for low concentrations of unwanted or target substances. Such absorbency can be obtained with thermoplastic materials used in the form of bulk polymer or a film, fiber, web, woven fabric, nonwoven fabric, sheet, packaging and other such structures including or surrounding the enclosed volume. The adsorbent of the invention is typically used in the context of an enclosed volume, also known as an enclosed ambient vapor phase that contains the adsorbent of the invention and the unwanted or target substances at a concentration that is not desirable.

  • Patent number: 7763566
Abstract: Toxic substances such as heavy metals are extracted from a medium using a sorbent composition. The composition is derived by sulfidation of red mud, which contains hydrated ferric oxides derived from the Bayer processing of bauxite ores. Exemplary sulfidizing compounds are H2S, Na2S, K2S, (NH4)2S, and CaSx. The sulfur content typically is from about 0.2 to about 10% above the residual sulfur in the red mud. Sulfidized red mud is an improved sorbent compared to red mud for most of the heavy metals tested (Hg, Cr, Pb, Cu, Zn, Cd, Se, Th, and U). Unlike red mud, sulfidized red mud does not leach naturally contained metals. Sulfidized red mud also prevents leaching of metals when mixed with red mud. Mixtures of sulfidized red mud and red mud are more effective for sorbing other ions, such as As, Co, Mn, and Sr, than sulfidized red mud alone.

  • Patent number: 7758836
Abstract: A system and method for removing sulfur-containing contaminants from indoor air includes a panel system having a first layer and a second layer. The first layer can include a base media onto which sodium bicarbonate is attached. The second layer can include a base media onto which activated carbon is attached. Indoor air including sulfur-containing contaminants can contact and pass through the first layer. Sulfuric acid can react with the sodium bicarbonate to produce sodium sulfate, which can, in turn, act as a drying agent for organic sulfur-containing contaminants in the indoor air, such as carbon disulfide and carbonyl sulfide. As a result of such drying, the second layer can more effectively trap and/or bind (adsorb) the organic sulfur-containing contaminants so that these contaminants are removed from the contaminated air. The treated air can be returned to an indoor space of the structure.

  • Patent number: 7758678
Abstract: A housing of an air cleaner has an air inlet port and an air outlet port, and incorporates an air filter. In the housing, a fuel adsorption filter is arranged downstream of the air filter in such manner as to intersect an air passage. An open portion and a sheet-like adsorption portion are vertically defined in an outer frame of the fuel adsorption filter. The adsorption portion has a fuel adsorbing function. A weir is provided in a boundary between the open portion and the adsorption portion. The weir limits air flow from the upstream side of the adsorption portion to the upstream side of the open portion. A flow straightening plate having a flow straightening function is provided in the open portion.

  • Patent number: 7727313
Abstract: The present invention relates to an air dryer (10) for a vehicle air system. The air dryer (10) includes a body (12) and a desiccant canister (14), the body (12) having an inlet (16) to receive air from an air source, an outlet (18) to supply air to a vehicle air system, a purge outlet and a regeneration inlet (24) to receive regenerative airflow from the vehicle air system. The body (12) is further provided with a chamber (28) containing a coalescer (38)positioned between the inlet (16) and the desiccant canister (14), and a bypass valve (34) positioned between the chamber (28) and the purge outlet. The coalescer (38) and bypass valve (34) are arranged such that during normal operation air entering through the inlet (16) passes through the coalescer (38) before reaching the desiccant canister (14) and during regeneration of the desiccant a portion of the regeneration flow passes through the coalescer (38) and the remainder of the regeneration flow bypasses the coalescer (38) through the bypass valve (34).
