  • Patent number: 11561722
Abstract: A processing device, operatively coupled with a memory device, is configured to perform a write operation on a page of a plurality of pages of a data unit of a memory device, to store host data in the page of the data unit. The processing device further generates a parity page for the host data stored in the page of the data unit and adds the parity page to parity data stored at a parity data storage location. Responsive to determining that a first size of the stored parity data satisfies a first condition, the processing device initiates execution of a compression algorithm to compress the stored parity data. Responsive to determining that a second size of the parity data resulting from the execution of the compression algorithm satisfies a second condition, the processing device performs a scan operation to release at least a subset of the stored parity data.

  • Patent number: 11556270
Abstract: A technique performs Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) transformation. The technique involves performing a garbage collection operation on a first uber within a storage array, the garbage collection operation freeing a set of disk slices of the first uber. The technique further involves, upon completing the garbage collection operation, reallocating storage of the set of disk slices from the first uber to a second uber within the storage array. The technique further involves, after the storage of the set of disk slices is reallocated from the first uber to the second uber, storing data within the second uber. Such leveraging of garbage collection when performing RAID transformation reduces overhead and wear without not negatively affecting system performance.

  • Patent number: 11544183
Abstract: This disclosure provides for host-controller cooperation in managing NAND flash memory. The controller maintains information for each erase unit which tracks memory usage. This information assists the host in making decisions about specific operations, for example, initiating garbage collection, space reclamation, wear leveling or other operations. For example, metadata can be provided to the host identifying whether each page of an erase unit has been released, and the host can specifically then command each of consolidation and erase using direct addressing. By redefining host-controller responsibilities in this manner, much of the overhead association with FTL functions can be substantially removed from the memory controller, with the host directly specifying physical addresses. This reduces performance unpredictability and overhead, thereby facilitating integration of solid state drives (SSDs) with other forms of storage.

  • Patent number: 11537289
Abstract: A data storage system can intelligently track activity by storing data in the form of data sets to a data repository of a data storage system with the data repository consisting of a memory of one or more data storage devices. An analysis engine of an activity module may be used to collect a first set of operational information associated with the data repository prior to creating a tracking strategy with the activity module that prescribes at least one alteration to what operational information is collected. A second set of operational information associated with the data repository can be collected with the second set of operational information being different than the first set of operational information in accordance with the tracking strategy. A dashboard is generated to display the collected first and second sets of operational information to a user.

  • Patent number: 11531479
Abstract: A lossy method of compressing data, such as image data, which uses wrap-around wavelet compression is described. Each data value is divided into two parts and the first parts, which comprise the most significant bits from the data values, are compressed using wrap-around wavelet compression. Depending upon the target compression ratio and the compression ratio achieved by compressing just the first parts, none, one or more bits from the second parts, or from a data value derived from the second parts, may be appended to the compressed first parts. The method described may be lossy or may be lossless. A corresponding decompression method is also described.

  • Patent number: 11513720
Abstract: A method and apparatus for sustaining performance of a data storage device by predictively determining resource needs and executing processes to meet those needs before the resources are actually needed. According to certain embodiments, a controller collects commands coming from a host and provides these to a machine learning model such as a recurrent neural network (RNN). The RNN is trained using this data, and output of the trained model is used to predict future commands. As future commands are developed by the RNN, resource allocation processes such as garbage collection may be initiated prior to the actual need, during times when processing cycles in the data storage device are available. By operating the garbage collection when the device has available processing may mitigate transition to an urgent mode.
